Webinar offers information on benefits of gas wells

Those interested in learning about the benefits of local natural-gas drilling may attend today's webinar in Norwich, presented by Commerce Chenango, Cooperative Extension of Chenango County and the Pennsylvania State University Extension.

Chenango County business owners and their representatives will be admitted free, and those from outside the county will pay $5 apiece. The 90-minute session will begin at 8 a.m. at the Eaton Center at 19 Eaton Ave.

At the session, attendees will learn how to increase their trade as the area is developed by gas drillers and associated industries.

A registration form for the seminar _ which will be followed by two more on Feb. 10 and 17 _ asks: ``Is your business or community poised to profit?

``The hottest natural-gas boom in the world is right here.

"The Marcellus Shale formation is driving energy firms to Pennsylvania and New York, and the influx of dollars is creating significant business opportunities with natural gas and service companies.''

Experts from Penn State University will discuss business strategies and opportunities, according to Ken Smith, executive director of the county's Cooperative Extension.

Maureen Carpenter, president and chief executive officer of Commerce Chenango, said business opportunities may abound locally, as wells are drilled and pipelines laid to put the area's natural gas into circulation.

As drilling crews and others arrive, restaurants and motels stand to profit. Less-obvious beneficiaries may include ``welding supply companies, gas stations, loggers, excavators and trucking companies,'' she said.

Smith said local business owners will learn how to contact key personnel at natural-gas firms. The forums are designed to make business owners comfortable with natural-gas development, Smith said.

Sometimes local people act as if gas drilling were ``an alien subject,'' but the state has been home to natural-gas drilling, he noted.

ALTERNATIVE HEAT ON THE RISE!

With the rise in fuel oil costs, it has set many people scrambling for alternative energy, i.e. pellet stoves, wood stoves and gas fireplace inserts. Sales are up by more than 50% and even greater for wood stoves. After all, we have an abundant supply of the renewable natural resource all around us in upstate NY. Wood and pellet stove suppliers have backlogged orders that started coming in as early as spring did.

The cost of pellets and a face cord of word have gone up with the greater demand and a woodstove isn't cheap to buy either, ranging in price from $1,000 to $4,000, add to that a chimney if you don't already have one at an approximate cost of $1,200. Are you still saving money? Definitely!

A great "green" alternative are the soapstone fireplaces. The wood burning units store the heat in the soapstone. Sales for the soapstone units increased 30%. Outdoor wood boilers have become very popular. Take a drive through the rural countryside and you can spot many of them. Beware though, as many towns are clamping down and prohibiting the outdoor furnaces in their areas. About 50 towns, cities, villages and counties across New York have either banned them completely or set regulations on use. The average cost to install an outdoor wood boiler runs in the vicinity of $10,000. And firewood, delivered, averages $250 for a cord, which, needless to say, has also nearly doubled in price over the past couple of years. Still saving money? Call your oil company and find out what your pre-pay amount will be for this winter. Run your numbers and you will see that you can recoup your cost in a couple of years on that new outdoor wood boiler!

If you are planning on installing an alternative energy source this winter, I would recommend that you order it now and make sure you find a good supplier of firewood or pellets, both of which are in high demand around here! Wood, pellets and gas inserts are an energy saving, low cost alternative to the exorbitant fuel costs.

Don't forget, before you install it, check with your local municipality for zoning and code compliance. AND... don't forget to get your chimney cleaned annually!

CHENANGO COUNTY

Chenango is a place for both indoor and outdoor recreation and provides four seasons worth of action and entertainment for the very active to the most passive. There is 80,000 bountiful acres of state land within the county, so you won't feel crowded as you seek the peace of mind that comes with outdoor pleasures. The Finger Lakes Trail winds through Chenango County adding miles of abundant state land, agricultural acreage and forests providing wonderful opportunities for cross-country skiing, hunting, hiking, snowmobiling and many other outdoor activities.

The Chenango, Unadilla and Susquehanna Rivers, along with several area lakes and streams, provide boating, canoeing, fishing, water skiing, and swimming opportunities. Area parks and campgrounds add picnicking, biking, hiking and camping facilities. Rogers Conservation Center in Sherburne, which is a part of the Department of Environmental Conservation, offers demonstrations and classes throughout the year to help people of all ages satisfy their curiosity about the "great outdoors."

In addition to college and school team sports, local towns support many different athletic leagues, ice-skating rinks, golf courses, tennis courts and swimming pools. There are two raceways in the area, which host races throughout the summer for cars and dirtbikes. The new $6.5 million Norwich Family YMCA offers recreational opportunities for all ages, including children's sports teams, adult leagues, a health club, 6-lane indoor pool, jogging track, kids gym, fitness studio's, racquetball and basketball courts. The new David L. Emerson Soccer and Sport Farm features a regulation soccer field, two softball dimension fields, a perimeter trail/walkway, and a designated parking area for approximately 150 vehicles. Other indoor facilities include the Norwich Soccer Center, fitness and martial arts centers.

Between the rolling hills of the county runs four rivers: The Susquehanna, the Chenango, the Unadilla and the Otselic. Along their banks are wildlife and waterfowl that draw visitors to appreciate the rural beauty of the county. The hills divide the population into distinct communities who take pride in their distinctive landmarks: Norwich, the county seat with an elegant domed courthouse built in 1838; Otselic, where fishermen flock to the banks of the river on the first day of trout season and whose fishing line industry once earned it the name of Tackle Town, USA; Sherburne, with its annual Pageant of Bands and nearby waterfall and historic bridge; and Bainbridge, with the Jericho Tavern, a landmark restaurant from 1805 and a village park, ringed with white churches and punctuated with a Victorian fountain and gazebo.

Each town in Chenango County is filled with history. Not only are many of these quaint villages filled with buildings that are over a century old, but the historical treasures that can be found at antique stores and flea markets is also a part of the area's history.
