A week or so ago, a report from the Commerce Department showed a surprising increase of 0.3% in February U.S. retail sales compared to the month before. That may not seem like much of an increase, but it was much better than the dropof 0.2% expected by economists surveyed by Bloomberg. Importantly, it's also the fourth rise in the past five months and represents an increase of 3.9% over the year-ago period.
So, how can consumers ramp up spending when unemployment is so high? Barron's magazine pointed out a few reasons why this is occurring.

Glimmers of Improvement - 03/12/10 04:47 PM
How nice to be able to say--for a second week in a row--that we continue to see gentle glimmers of improvement. Not necessarily to the whole economy, a little to employment but most to the real estate picture of Lake Tahoe and Incline Village. In many ways, the stars seem to be coming into alignment for job growth--high corporate profits, better retail spending, more consumer credit, a lot of hiring of temps.Let us hope. I think there are many reasons to do so.

Local Associations and MLS's.... Is there a better way? - 03/09/10 08:04 PM
I always try to be positive on ActiveRain.  Just read my postings.  But tonight I read someone's blog post and it got me started.  Having been a very involved REALTOR working with the local, state and national trade associations for over 10-years and having held many positions including state president, local president etc.  I won't spew my credentials but I've been there and have a nice golf shirt to show.
The concern, no, the complaint I have is protectionism.  Those involved in volunteer leadership are junkies addicted to the ego, including executive officers and staff who are the addiction dealers feeding the junkies for … (3 comments)
