old town: 1110 Elgin Lane - Key West, Florida - Historic Old Town - 06/12/14 08:01 PM

Recently added to the Key West real estate market is 1110 Elgin Lane which is shown in photos taken in 2014 and 1965.  If you compare the two photos you will see that decorative shutters were added and the front posts were replaced with some gingerbread attached. Otherwise, the house seems to look pretty much the same today as it did nearly fifty years ago. 1110 Elgin first appeared in the 1882 Sanborn Fire Map for Key West as #H  Elgin Street.  The numerical street identifier 1110 Elgin was added in the 1889 Sanborn Map. So we know this … (1 comments)

old town: 812 Johnson Lane, Key West Florida - Your Key West Dream Cottage - 05/23/14 10:30 PM

Just Listed by yours truly, 812 Johnson Lane in Old Town Key West. This two bedroom home has just been completely renovated and awaits a new owner. But there's more to this house than meets the eye from the street. You see this home has guest cottage at the rear that is located behind the free form heated pool. That means you will have a total of three bedrooms, a pool, and off street parking all within a three block walk to Duval Street.

The house has new drywall, flooring, electric, plumbing throughout the main house. There's a brand … (0 comments)

old town: 1112 Virginia St. - Key West, Florida - Legal Duplex - 05/04/14 10:54 PM

The two story temple style home located at 1112 Virginia Street in Old Town Key West may appeal to a variety of potential buyers because it has multiple possibilities for future use.

The black and white photo above was taken in 1965. (A notation on the back of the photo says the house was built tin 1895.)  I looked at the historic Sanborn Fire Maps and found this house identified as "1202 Virginia Street" in the 1912 edition. A smaller house was shown at the same location on an earlier map but that house was smaller and faced … (0 comments)

old town: 112 Hutchinson Lane - Key West - Price Reduction - 04/22/14 03:23 AM

The asking price on 112 Hutchinson Lane in the Bahama Village area of Key West was just reduced to $399,000. If you are a potential buyer looking for a reasonably priced fixer, this historic cottage may be the property you have been hoping to find

I checked the old Sanborn Fire Maps of Key West to see if I could determine the approximate date this house was built.  Frequent readers know that our county property records were destroyed in the great fire many years ago. During the Depression workers from the Works Project Administration reconstructed property records and unfortunately … (0 comments)

old town: 811 White Street, Key West, Fl - New Listing in Old Town - 04/15/14 06:51 AM

The newly built and newly listed home at 811 White Street in Key West is quite the contrast to the little Cigar Maker Cottages and Grand Conch Houses that populate the streets of Key West. This house will grab your attention if you happen to be driving down the street in a car or riding your bike.  It says "Look at Me!".  It is much larger than the other nearby properties. It dominates the neighbors in size and boldness of design.  It is in stark contrast to the much smaller bungalow that sat on this lot for five decades or … (1 comments)

old town: 832 Johnson Lane - Key West, Florida - A Fixer - 04/11/14 11:50 PM

Looking for a "Fixer" in Old Town?  832 Johnson Lane may be the place you have been waiting to find.

Just below is a photo of 832 Johnson Lane that was taken in 1965.  I took the photo below it to show the same house nearly 50 years later.  Our Historical Architectural Review Commission (HARC) will need to approve any exterior changes to the building.  The existing house has just one bedroom and one bath.  The Monroe County Property Appraiser says the 527 sq ft house sits on a 2633 sq ft lot or 25' x 116'.  The house … (1 comments)

old town: 326 William Street - Old Town - Key West - 04/07/14 09:22 AM

326 William Street in Key West, Florida is located within a block of the historitic Key West Seaport. Most of the houses in this immediate area were built because of proximity to the seaport which was the site of most early commerce on our island home. The 300 block of William Street is noted as having some of the oldest homes on the island.

For some odd reason the 300 block of William Street was omitted from the 1889 edition of the Sanborn Fire Map. But it did appear in the 1892 edition. That map shows numerous small … (0 comments)

old town: 1301 Newton St. Key West, Florida - 03/28/14 02:35 AM

1301 Newton Street is located at the corner of Newton and Florida Streets in the Meadows Area of Key West or two blocks east of Old Town proper. The Monroe County Property Appraiser identifies this home as having been built in 1943. I know that is not right because we were still involved in World War II at that time and houses in the Old Town environs were not being built then. So I searched the Sanborn Fire Maps for Key West and found what I believe to be 1301 Newton Street on the 1892 Sanborn Fire Map. The city … (0 comments)

old town: 415 Margaret Street - Key West, Florida - 02/27/14 08:31 PM

Wikipedia defines the grammatical term 'present perfect' as a  combination of the present tense and the perfect aspect used to express a past event with present consequences.  The Old Island Restoration Foundation awarded a Ceramic Star for the renovation and preservation of 415 Margaret Street in Old Town Key West. This is an excellent example of present perfect in my opinion.

Roger Emmons at Truman and Company, the listing Realtor, describes his present perfect listing at 415 Margaret Street:
"This is one of those very special homes where all of the elements come together to create an incredible setting … (1 comments)

old town: 810 Elizabeth Street Key West - Old Town Renovation Project - 02/26/14 07:01 PM

I first wrote about 810 Elizabeth Street, Key West nearly two months ago when it was first listed for sale.  This property is currently configured as two legal units but could become a single family home.  The listing Realtor, not me, has a letter from the Key West City Planner stating such. The property is in good condition as is, but it could be renovated into something much greater. The listing Realtor describes the property as:
"Perched near the crest of Solaris Hill, this 1,541 sq' legal duplex on a 3,192 sq' lot features a 3 bedroom 2 bath down … (1 comments)

old town: 923 Eaton Street - Key West - Back on the Market - 12/24/13 04:00 AM

If you are a frequent visitor to Key West, you have surely driven or walked by 921 and 923 Eaton Street,  the two side-by-side gems that rival the famous "Painted Ladies" of San Francisco. Although not as elaborate, the Key West Ladies speak to the simplicity of design that characterize many of the houses in the Old Town area.  In his book The Houses of Key West Alex Caemmerer wrote "What particularly impressed me at that time, although many of these houses were small and owned by people of modest means - mostly local workers, they had a simplicity of … (1 comments)

old town: 832 Johnson Lane - Key West - 12/11/13 11:42 PM

I recently showed 832 Johnson Lane in Old Town Key West to some buyers who had expressed a willingness to buy a fixer-upper.  They were searching for a place they could buy for a reasonable price, do some renovations, maybe expand the existing size, add a pool, and end up with a dream cottage. Their primary concern for any house was price and location. The amount of work and potential cost of updating and expanding 832 Johnson Lane became their over-riding concern. The little cottage  was a bit more of a challenge than they imagined.  I saw the place differently.  … (0 comments)

old town: 405 Olivia Street - Old Town - Key West - 11/06/13 10:31 PM
“The first and final thing you have to do in this world is to last it and not be smashed by it.”
                                                                                                                   Ernest Hemingway

I came to Key West in 1984 for a vacation. Town was much different back then. There were not nearly as many tourists, or cars, or motor scooters, or trolleys, or delivery trucks. Dogs could nap in the street.  More houses were broken than were fixed, especially in Old Town.  I remember walking back the guesthouse late one night after a night on Duval Street.  I passed under an old giant Mahogany tree and … (2 comments)

old town: 1009 Eaton Street ~ Old Town ~ Key West - 11/02/13 09:56 PM

1009 Eaton Street is a  two bedroom/two bath Conch style home offered for sale by Preferred Properties Key West, that's where I work but this is not my listing.  The Monroe County Property Appraiser says was the house was built in 1923. I think it is much older than that because I found it on the 1889 Sanborn Map.  That would indicate it existed before 1889 when the map was drawn. Be that as it may, it is still an old house and that is why it is the type of property would-be second home buyers want in Key … (1 comments)

old town: 625 Frances Street - Old Town - Key West - 10/30/13 12:16 AM

The newly listed home at 625 Frances Street in Key West is a doozie!  It's gonna be very popular, and I expect someone will buy it soon. It's got charm for days; it's really attractive and has good sized rooms that work for a full time residence or a Key West getaway; it's got a pool and off street parking; and it's priced to match the great location in Old Town Key West - just $975,000.  Oh, and it is the recipient of a gold star for historic preservation. Just Listed!, but not by me, 923 Eaton Street in the Old Town area of Key West, Florida.  If you are a frequent visitor to Key West, you have surely driven or walked by 921 and 923 Eaton Street,  the two side-by-side gems that rival the famous "Painted Ladies" of San Francisco. old town: 818 Olivia Street ~ Old Town ~ Key West - 10/16/13 03:42 AM

818 Olivia Street in Old Town Key West is a dream cottage come true. This place is as cute as a button, has off street parking, a pool, and is in move-in condition. It is within walking distance to just about any place you might want to go in the Old Town area, and it could even be rented as a monthly vacation rental if you really, really could allow someone else to use this precious space.

The listing Realtor describes 818 Olivia as follows:

old town: 2 Fletchers Lane - Old Town - Key West - 10/06/13 01:53 AM

The good thing about owning a house on a lane that hardly anybody even knows that it exists is that you probably will not have many drop in guests, Fuller Brush salesmen, or other ne'er do-wells knocking on your door. You probably won't be serenaded as the bars close when locals and tourists find their way back to their homes, apartments, guest houses or hotels. You'll miss out on lines like "Babe I love you!" or "I hate you! Get out of my life!".

The newly listed home at 2 Fletchers Lane in Key West is hidden away on … (2 comments)

old town: 415 Bahama Street - Old Town Key West - Tropical Oasis with 4 Transient Licenses - 09/12/13 11:28 PM

Just listed, but not by me, 415 Bahama Street in the Old Town area of Key West. I found what I believe to be 415 Bahama Street on the 1889 Sanborn Fire Map of Key West. The houses were not numbered the same in 1889 as they are today. But the location of the house is in scale with the other properties that are (or were) located on that block.  If you love "old houses", you're gonna really love this one.

In his book The Streets of Key West J. Willis Burke tells us that in the past Bahama … (0 comments)

old town: 310 Amelia Street - Key West - Bank Owned - 08/18/13 03:08 AM

Just listed, but not by me, 310 Amelia Street in the Bahama Village area of Key West.  This three bedroom/two bath house with pool and off street parking was built new (not remodeled nor updated) in 2001.  It has 1548 sq ft of living space under air plus a prominent front porch for people watching and an extra-large rear loggia that wraps around the rear side of the home. And it is Bank Owned and is offered for sale at $749,000.  CLICK HERE to view the Key West mls datasheet and listing photos. The listing Realtor describes this new listing … (1 comments)
