real estate: Congress Avenue Honored at the Austin History Center - 10/13/06 09:49 PM

The Austin History Center Association exhibit “The Avenue, Austin’s Main Street since 1839” is now open and runs through January 10, 2007.
Congress Avenue is the heart of Austin. It has served as the city’s center of commerce and staged our city’s most soulful demonstrations – from street parties celebrating the end of wars and the new millennia to demonstrations opposing the Vietnam War and supporting civil rights. The Austin History Center Association will present the “The Avenue: Austin’s Main Street Since 1839,” a major exhibit celebrating the history of Congress Avenue at the Austin History Center. The exhibit will feature … (0 comments)

real estate: Are you in the top 10 of the most overvalued housing markets? - 09/25/06 07:47 PM
We are lucky here in Austin. We were on CNN just a few months back and gloating about how great and undervalued our property is! It opened up a flood of investors looking for a great deal in Austin. We tend to forget about the rest of the US. Some markets are not so lucky. Extremely overpriced homes are wreaking havoc on markets that were so popular just last year.
Money Magazine lists the most overvalued markets:

real estate: How safe is your nest egg? - 09/25/06 07:38 PM
My father did everything right. Saved for college for his kids, retirement, 401k, etc. He was serious about saving and only paying for things with cash to avoid the credit card debt.
You can do everything 100% correct and still have life kick you in the butt. What will happen to your nest egg if you get a serious illness, job loss or disability? My father was diagnosed with a medical condition that forced him onto short term disability and also into his retirement money. He has bounced back quite well, but statistics show that most folks do not get so lucky. … (2 comments)

real estate: Texas Association of Realtors adds Health Care Cost Reducing Benefits - 09/21/06 08:40 PM
Plans cost $49.95 a month for individuals and $59.95 for families. AmeriPlan can help REALTORS® and their families save from 20 to 80 percent on medical expenses. TAR has arranged to rebate the $30 member registration fee.
The Texas Association of Realtors has teamed up with AMeriplan. I personally have used this plan for my dental "coverage" in the past. I cant say that I am thrilled about it, but I have used it. Ameriplan is not insurance, but as I understand it signing up with them allows you to get a less expensive negotioated rate for services. You still have to pay, … (1 comments)

real estate: Lack of rain and low lake levels are taking a toll on Austin! - 09/20/06 12:39 PM

We are in some serious need of rain here in Central Texas. We managed to get a little bit in the last few days. The water level on Lake Travis is dropping about a foot a week. To keep boats afloat the Marina employees had to push the boats farther out to deeper water. This is no easy task, and some marinas can take days to move around.
Austin's Mansfield Dam is one of the most popular boat launch ramps on the lake. If the lake manages to lose another 5 feet of depth, the Lower Colorado River Authority will most likely … (1 comments)

real estate: Shielding your MLS comments from weirdos! - 09/20/06 12:20 PM
Donna Quanrud's blog Safety Warning made me think of this:
Sometimes when searching MLS agents will put notes in the "comments" section that in this day and age I find pretty scary. Just the other day I came across comments that said "Son home from school by 4pm, he can let you in...", or "Elderly woman home alone, call first", or even "Young children home alone after 3pm".
What are these people thinking? I know that certain comments are only shown in the Realtor's version of the MLS and not for the average Joe, but that does not mean that this info is safe … (4 comments)

real estate: Central Texas Snakes - 09/19/06 07:11 PM
Today my son ran into the house with a small little creature screaming "My worm has a snake head". After bolting across the living room (he always brings in some sort of creature) I was forced to tell him that his "worm" was indeed a snake.
Our creek out back has quite a few snakes, and we see many that are questionable as far as what they are and if they are dangerous. One morning I was taking the kids to school and upon opening the garage door was greeted by a 6 foot brown snake waiting to get into the garage. … (7 comments)

real estate: Deer Resistant Plants - 09/19/06 07:04 PM
Texas hill country is full of deer. We love them when they wander up to the backyard. My question is, does anyone know of any "deer resistant" landscaping or plant ideas that will keep them from eating everything else on your lot?
I was told to use aromatic plants such as evergreen to keep them at bay. Also plants with a bitter taste...any ideas there? I am not a gardener, nor do I go around tasting random plants!I am aware that deer will eat almost anything. When plants and greens are growing like crazy they simply cannot resist. The deer corn that … (2 comments)

real estate: Please prepare your home for a showing! - 09/19/06 06:53 PM
I arrived at a home today with a client and was completely appalled at the condition of the place. Im not talking a cheap house either. This house was in the high 700's.
First of all, the pet odor upon entering was almost unbearable. Why was Fifi left inside on a beautiful day when your home is being shown? There was a full, overflowing trashcan, beer bottles all over the kitchen counter and a pair of socks in the living room that looked like they were worn outside for a week.
I had to ask myself if this was some sort of … (5 comments)

real estate: Housing Bubble? Not in Austin! - 09/04/06 09:15 PM
Austin, Texas is still one of the most undervalued cities in the United States, while also being voted one of the top 10 cities to live in America.
When a house is listed here and it is priced correctly, it tends to sell very quickly. There are a few overpriced areas, mainly the "revitalization" areas where homeowners have caught on to the "diamond in the rough" they are sitting on.
Austin is a beautiful city and is the newest location for a large "Hollywood" movie production company breaking ground this year. It is a growing, thriving city and Real Estate is booming.
"God Bless … (2 comments)
