Back in 1994, the State of Michigan passed Public Act 237 that revised the way property taxes were calculated. TAXABLE VALUE was introduced to the system as the value that property taxes would be calculated from. Prior to the passage of this legislation, the State Equalized Value (SEV) of a property was the value that taxes were calculated from. SEV, by law, is supposed to reflect 50% of a properties Market Value. What then does Taxable Value represent?

In my blog, "Why Kalamazoo", I mentioned the presentation made by Ron Kitchens to the Greater Kalamazoo Association of Realtors. One of the things Ron talked about was the High Speed Rail System that is being developed between Detroit and Chicago. "Next stop......Kalamazoo!" Big city folk already spend hours in their cars commuting to expensive suburbs; so why not spend a couple of hours relaxing, or even extending your work day, as you let the engineer "drive"? I went to a short talk a couple of weeks ago given by Ron Kitchens, Chief Executive Officer at Southwest Michigan First, a private economic development group of companies in Kalamazoo. I always come away from Ron's presentations enthused, and happy that I live where I live. I'm not a demographer, but would say the Kalamazoo metro area is on the smaller end of medium sized. with the population of Kalamazoo County at just over 250,000. Wow! For this size, Kalamazoo County has so much to offer, and in a balanced sort of way.
