st croix events: Earl Blows Through St Croix - 08/31/10 06:30 PM
the aftermath of Earl.....Earl blew in during the wee hours Sunday night and raged all day Monday.  I experienced his fury as Chuck and I attempted to rescue his little 16' boat at 5:00 a.m. on Monday morning, which had come untied at the dock and was banging into the pilings.  Wave after wave crashed on us as we tried to maneuver the boat out of harm's way onto the awaiting boat trailer.  Then, as if by divine intervention, the wind and rain stopped and there was a bit of a lull in the wave action, and we were able to … (1 comments)

st croix events: a New Door Opening on St Croix - 04/01/10 04:37 PM

March 31 is "transfer day" in the US Virgin Islands. The day commemorates an event that occurred over eight decades ago, when the Danish West Indies were formally ceded to the United States by Denmark.  They became the U.S. Virgin Islands, in exchange for twenty-five million dollars. To learn more, visit Consulate US VI.
The date was MY "transfer day" too. I have left Coldwell Banker Land-de Wilde Realty and re-joined Buyer Agent St Croix. It is with sadness that I leave Coldwell Banker.  I loved it there and have nothing but great things to say about Amy Land-de Wilde and the team she has painstakingly assembled.

st croix events: Donkey Derby on St Croix - 12/28/09 10:46 PM
Part of the long Christmas weekend festivities was the long-awaited Donkey Derby.  What fun!  Sponsored by the Gentlemen of Jones (see one gentleman below), there were several events:  adult races, children's races, buggy races, etc.  My favorite was the ladies' race, because three of my friends participated.

Here, Melinda is raring to go - but the donkey isn't!  She never made it out of the start gate the whole race!

Cathy is an old veteran.  She raced last year....well, sort of.  She fell off early and her donkey ran away!  She got off to a great start … (1 comments)

st croix events: St Croix, US VI: Christmas Cruzian Style - 12/28/09 10:34 PM
Many of you readers have asked what it's like to spend the holidays on a small tropical island.  Here's what we did during the 3-day Christmas celebration.
Christmas eve day was spent with friends.  The guys went fishing and us gals went "Chaney Hunting." Chaney is broken pieces of pottery from a by-gone era.  You find it near sugar mills and old plantations  - and the children of the 1800's used it for play money - and the term "chaney" is sort of a combo of "china" and "money."  We hit the jackpot in the field where Home Depot will be built, … (0 comments)

st croix events: Activities on a Typical Weekend on St Croix - 10/02/09 07:59 PM
I wanted to give some idea of the choices of festivities and events we have almost every weekend/week here in St Croix.  A list doesn't really convey the message of what fun we have.  Those of us who live on St Croix have such terrible decisions we must make: where to go, what to do.  There are so many things to choose from - and it's low season!  The list just grows and grows as we approach tourist season. The worst thing about living on St Croix is remembering that we are not on vacation all the time!  Here's just a sampling of this upcoming weekend … (2 comments)

st croix events: St Patrick's Day Celebration on St Croix - 03/18/09 06:45 PM
"Allawe" on the lovely island of St Croix are Irish for a day - and that day is the day of the St Patties day parade - which was last Saturday. Hundreds of locals, transplants, and tourists show up to drink and revel, watch or participate in the parade, and enjoy some wonderful live music. The festivities began around 9:00 a.m. - when throngs of us made our way to our favorite float to decorate it and ourselves. This year, I was on the "Pickled Greek's" float. Pete is the magician (chef - second from left in photo below) for this … (0 comments)

st croix events: St Croix Christmas Feast - 12/26/08 06:07 PM
What a lovely Christmas we had here! The weather was gorgeous and there was a big turnout at Cane Bay for a HUGE Christmas feast! I've never seen so much food! Three turkeys were fried and people brought every imaginable side dish and dessert. By the time lunch was served (around 2:30 - 3:00), I was so hungry from smelling all the good smells that I'm afraid I bordered on being rude!
Later in the afternoon, I enjoyed a meditation and watched the sun set. It was a wonderful day - but I am about to blow up and I may … (0 comments)

st croix events: St. Croix Holiday Craft Fairs - 12/16/08 06:17 PM

Christmas is the season when all the many artists on St Croix get into high gear and start promoting their wares at the many craft fairs on the island. The "biggies" are the Starving Artist's Sale at the Whim Plantation, which was bigger and better than ever this year, and the Christmas Spoken Here festival at the St George Botanical Gardens, also well promoted and well attended.
The weather is perfect here this time of year, breezy but warm, and the events are held on Sunday, so families come and browse and do their Christmas shopping. Tourists also enjoy … (3 comments)

st croix events: New Cardiac Care Center Open in St. Croix - 12/02/08 09:49 AM
Finally, the $18.5 million Virgin Islands Cardiac Center is open! This signals the start of a new era of cardiac care in the the Caribbean! While the Luis hospital already provides heart catheterizations, angioplasty, stenting work, and pacemaker implantings, the 25,305-square-foot center offers more comprehensive services, hospital officials say.
The center is connected to the Intensive Care Unit on the hospital's second floor and will house two fully equipped catheterization labs, offices and a conference room.
The building also connects to an existing employee entrance on the lower level and an eating area outside of the hospital's cafeteria.
