Establishing Oneself in Playa

My first sales meeting working for The Tides started out on an interesting note and set the tone for me. Our GM and sales manager asked the sales executives for four items: 1) put together a business plan that incorporates our assistants, 2) network with the local real estate agents, 3) network with establishments (from hotels to eateries) consistently.

In my opinion, much of sales is common sense, but how often do we forget to return to the basics? Even in Colorado, real estate sales operate based on the same fundamental concepts, do they not? I am learning that the same type of discipline is beneficial in Playa, mainly because there are so many distractions and fun things to do.

Thus, in my first week, I drafted a business plan (working document, of course) and incorporated my assistant, Javier, immediately. He provided feedback regarding the plan and we have established daily, weekly, monthly goals for himself. In addition, he is beginning a reading program to get him more business minded and help him decide if he wants to pursue full time sales or work on the operations side. We have begun calling on local establishments together and have learned a lot from each other thus far. Networking is key and he is learning how to present himself and get his face known.

In Colorado as a real estate agent, it was recommended that I hire an assistant as quickly as possible because that individual becomes a lead source for your individual business. How fortunate am I that Javier works with me as a member of the company and is not only from Guadalahara, but is extremely well traveled for a 27-year old. It certainly helps when you have confidence in your colleagues abilities, and they are still willing to grow as a professional.

I have learned that to be successful, one must eliminate as many distractions as possible. That includes getting your personal life in order, so you can concentrate on sales. For me, this has been getting settled as I have been here nearly two weeks and just got into my apt late yesterday. Despite being shuffled about, I have maintained disciplined and focused on the job; this was accomplished by studying The Tides at night and going into the office every day to fill the pipeline of leads and contacts.

Playa del Carmen, Week One

After a year of networking to get a sales opportunity like this one, I arrived in Playa del Carmen on March 2nd. If you have never been to the Riviera Maya, arriving the second time is much easier than the first because the scene awaiting you after collecting baggage is simply chaotic.

Having been here just over one week, it is exciting to see the new opportunities occuring in the Yucatan Peninsula; Quintana Roo is the last state in Mexico to be developed and those seeking excellent opportunity are taking advantage. I toured the region in January during my interview, but it was such a whirlwind that heading out yesterday with Javier, one of our assistants, was extremely beneficial. Just seeing the landscape and what makes up this region is amazing.

The Riviera Maya is a 90-mile stretch from Cancun to Tulum and encompasses palm lined beaches with gorgeous Caribbean waters. Playa del Carmen has a newly built pedestrian walkway (5th Street) and a host of restaurants, shops, and boutique hotels. The cruise ships obviously dock on the south end of town and Cozumel is just a 30-minute ferry ride away. For a such a small town, it has a lot going on and constant activity as high season begins in August and typically ends in May (though I've been told it's bloody hot then).

The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef spans four countries, Belize, Guatamala, Honduras, and Mexico. It is 1290 km long and extends from the northern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula all the way down to the Bay Islands of Honduras. The reef lies just off the coastline ranging from 300 meters out to 40 kilometers; it is the second largest in the world and offers endless opportunity for scuba diving and snorkeling. This ecosystem is home to over 80 species of coral, 500 variety of fish, and countless landscapes.

Other day activities include: Puerto Morales (20 miles north of Playa and where the reef comes especially close), Kailuum, Xcaret, Paamul, Puerto Aventuras, Xpu-Ha, Yal-Ku, Kantenah, Akumal, Xcacel, Xel-Ha, Hidden Worlds, and of course, Tulum.

Tulum is my favorite thus far simply because it is so relaxing and beautiful. There is no nightlife to speak of and maybe a handful of places to eat, the but beaches are exquisite. Fear not, development is coming, but for now, it is relatively undiscovered.
