anobiid beetle: Misdiagnosis -- Anobiid Beetles - 07/03/11 04:11 PM
In the northwest we have a wood destroying insect pest known as the anobiid beetle. It is often, incorrectly, referenced as the powderpost beetle which is, in fact, a different pest.
The professional structural pest inspector, who hears someone reference powderpost beetles in the crawl space, knows what that person is talking

anobiid beetle: Destruction Major -- Anobiid Beetles - 04/16/11 12:04 AM
Here in the Pacific Northwest, of the wood destroying insects, I would say that the one that really gets my attention is the anobiid beetle. The anobiid is a wood-boring beetle that works in the soft lumber under our homes. They thrive in a moisture content of 13 to 18% and can re-infest,

anobiid beetle: Beautiful Frass - 03/04/11 09:36 PM
Frass: "By-product of insect tunneling and feeding activities."
In this state I not just a home inspector, also I am a licensed structural pest inspector. Without that license, an inspector is not allowed to identify or make specific recommendations regarding wood destroying insect species or damage.
Sometimes we inspectors appreciate it

anobiid beetle: Who's Chewin' On The Wood Furniture? - 01/05/11 03:09 PM
What noxious pest is chewing on the wood furniture? That is a sometimes relevant and alarming question.
This article was inspired by a recent post written by Barbara Duncan. She has this hand-turned wood bowl and, just the other day, she found it to be a victim of insect activity.

anobiid beetle: Never Answer The Same Question Twice -- Woodboring Beetles - 12/26/10 11:49 PM
This is another post in response to Bob Stewart's "it's raining" blog and challenge -- "Never Answer the Same Question Twice". The goal is to sanitize, and share, Emails that were sent to us by clients with a goal of selecting and publishing those Emails, and the replies, that provide valuable information for the public. anobiid beetle: Anobiid Beetle Infestation - 12/03/10 04:34 PM
Here in the maritime Pacific Northwest, we have a wood destroying insect that is not seen in many other parts of the country. I am speaking of the anobiid beetle. Sometimes it is, incorrectly, referred to as the powder-post beetle. This pest can over the long-term decimate the lumber in substructure

anobiid beetle: Whatcom County Home Inspector (King of the House) -- Anobiid Beetles - 09/05/10 12:22 PM
In the northwest corner of Washington state we have an insidious pest that, fortunately for other areas, tends to be found in only a few locations in the country. In the maritime northwest, lucky for us, we get stuck with this bug.
The anobiid beetle is a tiny insect, you

anobiid beetle: Bellingham Home Inspector: Lyctid Beetles - 07/31/10 11:06 AM
Around here, almost always the term being used incorrectly, contractors and other individuals will reference damage from "powderpost beetles" in basement or crawl space lumber.
Fact is, they have the damage figured out but they are citing the wrong pest. The pest that is eating our joists and beams in

anobiid beetle: Bellingham Home Inspector (King of the House) -- Anobiid Beetles - 08/14/09 05:59 PM
One of the wood destroying insects in Bellingham, Whatcom county and this region is the anobiid beetle. The tiny adult beetle, as small or smaller than a grain of rice, lays an egg. That egg turns to larvae and the larvae crawls into the wood and feeds for five or

anobiid beetle: Bellingham Home Inspection (King of the House): Sodium Borate and Anobiid Beetles - 11/10/07 10:45 AM
I have done a number of posts here about the pest known as anobiid beetle which is so common in crawl spaces here in the Pacific Northwest. The insect leaves exit holes in soft lumber and will live for years and years if the conditions are right -- literally destroying

anobiid beetle: When Anobiid Beetles Strike - 10/18/07 09:28 PM
This is another photo from the Pacific Northwest, where the anobiid beetles had been working in a crawl space. I enlarged the photo, so you can take a good look. All the little shot sized holes are where the larvae pupated, turned into an adult and then left the wood. The

anobiid beetle: Bellingham Home Inspection (King of the House): Assessing Anobiid Beetle Activity - 09/03/07 01:25 AM
I have posted before about anobiid beetles and the damage they can do here in the Pacific Northwest in a damp, unventilated crawl space. The home buyer's question is always the same: Are they still active? Sometimes the damage they have done is so extensive that that concern becomes a moot point --

anobiid beetle: Bellingham Wa. Home Inspection (King of the House): Slower Than A Speeding Bullet - 08/06/07 09:38 PM
Well, here is a crawl space decimated by anobiid beetles. This pest works slowly, over the years, but when it has taken a hold -- BROTHER! Again, as always, it was a conventional crawl space and intended by design to have open crawl space vents. The primary conducive condition was vents that

anobiid beetle: Crawl space ventilation and Washington Law - 07/20/07 01:28 AM
There have been a number of blogs, among us home inspector types, discussing crawl space ventilation and lack of same. Some inspectors in other parts of the country are recommending that crawl space vents be closed. As I have pointed out, in this state the rules on this go beyond mere

anobiid beetle: Anobiid Beetles -- Smaller than a grain of rice yet they destroyed this home! - 06/22/07 11:53 PM
Yesterday I had the unpleasant job of letting a realtor and my client know that a home that was other wise not too bad, had been destroyed underneath by a secretive and very destructive wood destroying organism. I am speaking of the dreaded anobiid beetle. I have heard people say, "ah, don't worry

anobiid beetle: Bellingham WA home inspection (King of the House): Identifying anobiid beetles - 05/12/07 10:19 AM
Along with rot being referred to as dry rot (almost always the wrong term), one of the most mis-diagnosed problems with wood is mixing up the damage caused by anobiid beetles and crediting it to "powderpost beetles." Here in the northwest, clients are always asking if I will check the crawl
