We are in the final week of the latest home inspection training course at Bellingham Technical College. We have completed all of the 120 hours of state approved classroom lessons. Now we are working hard to complete the 40 hours of field training. The field training includes a small group of students going out with an instructor. Each student, to pass the course, must turn in a report that meets the state standards of practice for home inspection. After a hiatus of a few months, due to the holidays, the next Fundamentals of Home Inspection course, and field training, at Bellingham Technical College begins on Monday, February 28. The classroom training takes a student through the fundamentals of home inspection training (mandated 120 hour course) and through the 40 hours of approved field training. In Washington State any potential new home inspector must not only complete 120-hours of Fundamentals of Home Inspection training but he or she must also complete 40-hours of field training. The field training has certain requirements: The student must be on-site with a licensed and experienced inspector. The, minimum five, inspections must be of all elements of the house, not just a partial inspection. At the end of the process, the student must turn in a report on each house and that report must meet the state standards of practice. I was checking class enrollment this evening and the next Fundamentals of Home Inspection and 40-hours of field training courses are starting to fill-up with students. At BTC, typically, we do not have mammoth sized classes. When possible, it is best to have smaller classes with more time for discussion. In checking my calendar, I see that there will be another home inspection training class at BTC in two more weeks, beginning August 30, 2010. Since home inspector licensing began in this state later last year, it has been mandatory for those people entering the field to acquire 40-hours of approved field training. In addition to the field training, those individuals must, also, take a state approved course in the "fundamentals of home inspection." The content of this 120-hour course is regulated by the state of Washington. The first such course offered in the state was here at Bellingham Technical College.
We have been running the class every couple months with the advent of licensing.

At Bellingham Technical College, in the fundamentals of home inspection course the day students learn about wood destroying organisms, it is accurate to say that there are signs of wood destroying organisms everywhere. Between the BTC collection of damaged wood, and a few pieces that are brought along by ace troubleshooter Dan Suomi -- Washington State Department of Agriculture -- we really do have a smorgasbord of damage. When Dan Suomi from the Washington State Department of Agriculture spoke to the home inspection training class at Bellingham Technical College recently, he stated that some areas of the northwest are having a rat population boom. I have got to say that I sure do see a ton of rats anymore. I see them in low-end houses and also in high-end homes. Dan said that the intruders are a combination of Norway rats and roof rats (no relation to Nutsy S. Wallenda). Below is a photo of Dan with one such critter that is going nowhere in a hurry.

We are only a few days away from the next fundamentals of home inspection training class at Bellingham Technical College. That will include a week of field training at the end of the course. The class gets underway this coming Monday, July 12. Inevitably we have students from different parts of the state and, often, they do not know there way around campus. The course, this session, will be in Morse Center, #221.
Morse Center is the building at the upper right on the map, listed as MC. See all you students bright and early Monday morning, 8am.

I have been receiving many phone calls and Emails about this class and it seems that interest is high. This will be the first class we will have taught after the full home inspector licensing law is implemented, on July 1, 2010. The Bellingham Technical College course includes not only 120 hours of classroom training.
