Previously, we have looked at the 120 hour fundamentals course, the 40 hours of field training and the college itself. Today, I wish to focus on what I believe to be one advantage of taking the course at BTC. We have online study guides and practice quizzes that are interactive and setup to help our students study for their essential licensing exams. Bellingham Technical College, pictured above, is one of the most respected of all of the technical colleges in the state. Initial planning for a vocational college in Bellingham goes clear back to the year 1952. The 21-acre campus, which is still the home of the college today, was established here in 1957. This is a state approved course and provides students with the mandatory 120 hours of classroom fundamentals training in the profession of home inspection. The second element of training that is state mandated, for anyone entering the field of home inspection after September 1, 2009, is 40 hours of approved field training. Washington state law, effective September 1, 2009, mandates that all individuals who are entering the field of home inspection must have completed an approved 120-hour minimum course in the fundamentals of home inspection. That basic course, which must be approved by DOL, has strict guidelines on the curriculum offered and ALL training must be completed in a classroom setting. Videos or online training by correspondence courses is not included in the 120-hours. There are presently three fundamentals courses approved by Washington state. This week those of us who teach in the program have another of the approved fundamentals of home inspection classes coming to an end at Bellingham Technical College. Today completes this classes fourth week. At this writing, this is the only approved course in the state that is available to the public without a prospective inspector having to first purchase a franchise. This course is open and available to the public. We have people from all areas of the state coming to town to take the class. Those of us who teach the class enjoy it. This makes the BTC offering the first, and at this point the only, course in the state that will be accepted by the DOL as basic or fundamentals training in home inspection. The Bellingham Technical College 120-hour course has received conditional approval. This helps alleviate the recent catch-22 situation that was faced by many home inspectors across the state and is explained here. (5 comments)
