italy: Italy Photo -- Pretty Impressive - 10/26/11 01:13 PM
I have been so busy catching up, after getting back from Italy just over two weeks ago, that I have not had time to go through many of my photos. This was a hard building to photograph. There was another building across the street and it was of such gargantuan size that it was difficult to get far enough away to get it all in. To complicate matters, there were a zillion pedestrians and construction taking place in front of it. Therefore, the best way to take the shot was up high. Even if it is a limited view, it is … (2 comments)

italy: Standing in the Shadows-- ATM Scam in Italy - 10/09/11 03:02 AM
Well, I am back in Bellingham after our recent Italy trip.
For the first time in my many years of traveling, my wife and I were victimized by an ATM scam at a small, and very charming, small city in Italy. We had taken a daytrip from Tuscany and, after lunch, decided to get some cash. We were in a tiny piazza, off a retail area, only a few people were around. We saw a Bank of Lucca, ATM machine.
Odd, but we walked up to it and a young woman, with a baby, was standing in front of the device. She was … (75 comments)

italy: Wine and Pasta Anyone? - 03/12/11 04:04 PM
I was out in the cold today doing an inspection. When I got home, I decided to look through some of my photos I selected, some time ago, to send up to Active Rain. I found this one and I am in the mood for it.
This is a shop in Milan, Italy. And shops like this abound over there. It is totally amazing how many different types of pasta the Italians make fresh, and how much pride some people take in their pasta and their tantalizing morsels.
This is what we would call a deli. In fact, it is a … (10 comments)

italy: Verona, Italy - 12/01/10 04:16 AM
I very suddenly got a nasty case of the crud over the weekend. I felt fine in the morning and was a mess by Monday morning. So, today and the next couple days I think, I have scheduled some recovery time. I was so wiped that I have not even posted anything in the Rain this week. I was going through some of my travel photos and I think this one is representative and a good example of why I like Verona in Italy. It is a gorgeous city with a river. This photo does not show the river because we … (2 comments)

italy: Padlocks of Love -- Verona Italy - 11/21/10 12:13 PM
I have written previously that in the Italian city of Verona, the home of Romeo and Juliet, the essence of the famous couple is everywhere. There is the home and balcony of Juliet, where everyone tries, with considerable success, to have physical contact with Juliet.
And, at one of the main bridges across the river, there is yet another tradition. Couples leave their locks on the light poles that are up on the bridges.

The story is that lovers come to Verona. They write their names on the locks and then they throw the keys into the water. That "locks" … (9 comments)

italy: Fashion Conscious Pigs in Pants -- Milan, Italy - 11/14/10 03:17 AM
I am sorting through some of my photos from the recent trip to Italy. I found one that brought back funny memories. My wife and I use Milan as a place to light for a couple days after the awfully long plane ride from west coast USA to Europe.
The Sunday morning after we got there we were walking around in Milan, seeing the downtown sights. In Italy, the snacks and confections they make and sell in shops are quite amazing and intricate.

Now, in looking at the photo, and the sign, you might think that the "Don't Touch" warning … (6 comments)

italy: When In Italy, Do As The Italians Do -- Grope Juliet! - 11/08/10 11:19 AM
I have written about this phenomenon before. I will preface this by saying that since my wife was along, I was a good boy and I kept my hands to myself. However, I was about the only person present who did behave. Verona, Italy is the city of Romeo and Juliet, the most famous romantic couple ever. If you saw the recent movie "Letters from Juliet", then you know about Verona.
I think, having been to many Italian cities over the past decade or more, that Verona is my favorite. It has lots of color and it is rich in history with … (10 comments)

italy: Steve's Exciting Italian Vacation -- Back Home Again - 10/25/10 02:32 AM
I am back home from Italy. More tales to come. Or, as Nutsy says, more tails to come. We are jet-lagged.
On these trips, my wife criticizes me for it but whenever we go to Italy I have a fair bit of pizza. I gained weight!  Yep I did. I mean, if you go to Italy, you have to have some pizza. The pizza in Italy is different than pizza here. In most cases they do not put on every topping but the kitchen sink. They tend to select only a few. I have, many times, seen the natives eating pizza … (11 comments)

italy: Go Figure -- Vacation Timing - 10/02/10 03:53 PM
This time my wife and I have had many obstacles we had to overcome in planning our upcoming Italy vacation that is supposed to begin late in the week. We still have a couple more things that have to be done, prior to being free and clear to go for sure.
Tonight I was looking at a news site and I saw that, as of today, the state department has now put a travel warning on all of Europe. I bet that is going over big in Europe. I can tell by prices, based on last time that I went, that … (10 comments)

italy: A Tiny Piece of Paradise - 05/09/10 04:54 AM
While I was thumbing through my photos of my last trip to Italy, I found one that I particularly like. My wife and I were standing on a hill, looking down on this large, bustling and classic city. As I viewed the landscape, I noticed that one house had this little tiny yard. Among all the urban activity, it was their piece of paradise.

Notice that nice spot of well-tended green right there in the middle.

 Thanks for stopping by,

italy: A Pasta-ing We Shall Go - 09/18/09 03:41 AM
This is my second Italy flavored post in the past hour. I had to do it. I was looking through some of my Italy photos today. My wife and I, about three or four years ago, spent two weeks in Bologna. If you don't know it, Bologna is the food capital of Italy. It is in the bread basket of Italy, the Emilia Romagna region, and it is noted for the best food in all of the country.
Their pastas are handmade in all the delis and the restaurants. You can see people making them, often little old ladies who have … (9 comments)

italy: Stern Italian Cat - 09/18/09 03:24 AM
About three years ago when the wife and I were touring the Cinqua Terre in Italy, we were walking around one of the little hill towns. We were way up high, with this beautiful view of the ocean and all of these ancient houses. Is that what I took a photo of? Well, yes and no.
As we were taking a stroll, sitting at the door to his owner's home -- typical cat -- was this very stern looking Italian feline. I thought he was an interesting looking creature so I am posting the photo. He did not look like a … (12 comments)

italy: Please! Don't Play Ceilito Lindo One More Time! - 03/30/09 01:58 AM
There are a number of similarities between traveling in Italy and Mexico. First, both countries have old buildings and a propensity for good food and bright colors. Case in Point: Below is a bar in Italy. Sicily to be exact.

Case in Point: Below is an open-air cafe in Mexico, Oaxaca to be exact.

There is yet another similarity -- both latin-flavored countries have climates that lend themselves to performances by street bands, strolling bands, mariachi bands. Case in point: Here is a photo of a street band in Italy.

Case in point: Here is a photo of a … (12 comments)

italy: Romans Knew Thy Wood - 02/05/08 01:44 AM
I was pondering Charlie Buell's blog called "What Would Impress The Romans" and thought I would pull out a couple photos of Roman work that impressed me. This is the bottom of an ancient Roman-built building in Bologna Italy. Bologna, like much of Italy, was run, or overrun, by Romans (or Greeks) at one time or another. The thing I think interesting about this is the age of the wood and the fact it is still supporting a monster-sized building. This wood is somewhere between 750 and 1000 years old and it is holding up in this location because it is sheltered and dry. … (2 comments)
