The Bellingham Technical College offering " Fundamentals of Home Inspection" was the first course in the state to receive approval from the Department of Licensing when home inspector licensing took effect a few years ago.
This course attracts many students, from around the state, who wish to be trained as home inspectors. The next class will begin on February 4, 2013. The four-week session includes 120-hours of fundamentals training and 40 hours of on-site field training.

The next home inspector training course, to be conducted at Bellingham Technical College, will begin on Monday, September 10, 2012. That is the last inspector training course for this year (how fast it is flying by) at Bellingham Technical College. This is a state approved course and the student receives 120 hours of fundamentals of home inspection training and another 40 hours of field training. The Bellingham Technical College four week home inspector training program always includes not only 120-hours of fundamentals training but, also, 40 hours of field training. Washington State laws require potential students to successfully complete not only the fundamentals training but to complete the field training as well.
The field training includes small groups of students, we split them up, going out with an instructor who is a licensed home inspector. Each student, to pass this part of the course, must turn in a report that meets the state standards of practice for home inspection.

We are in the final week of the latest home inspection training course at Bellingham Technical College. We have completed all of the 120 hours of state approved classroom lessons. Now we are working hard to complete the 40 hours of field training.

At Bellingham Technical College, as I posted earlier this week, we are getting ready to wrap-up our latest class that consists of 120 hours of classroom training in home inspection. This type of training is required for a potential inspector to become licensed in the state. Next week, after a final, the students will be knee deep in the field training. To be allowed to sit for the state test, the student must also complete the 40 hours of approved field training.

We are only a week and a day away from the next fundamentals of home inspection training class at Bellingham Technical College. That will include a week of field training at the end of the course. The class gets underway on Monday, February 28, 2011. This will be the first class of the new year.
Inevitably we have students from different parts of the state and, often, they do not know their way around campus. The course, this session, will be in T-3.

There has been quite a gap since the last class due to the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years season. As is always the case, that course will also include the mandatory 40 hours of field training.

We taught the course every couple months this year. But, due to the holidays, the next course will not be offered until February 28, 2011. This is an intense four week course. I had a call this week from a student who had not yet registered who wanted to know if he could still get in if he arrived Monday morning. Fact is, with this class, enrollment levels are such that he can. With some larger classes, that would have been tough.

Since home inspector licensing began in this state later last year, people (yes men and women) who wish to enter the field of home inspection are required to take a 120-hour state approved course in the fundamentals of home inspection.
The first state approved course was offered by Bellingham Technical College, a part of the state technical and community college system.

Our most recent home inspection class is wrapping up this week at Bellingham Technical College.
The next Fundamentals of Home Inspection Training Course will begin at Bellingham Technical College on August 30, 2010 -- a Monday.
The course is three weeks long and it fulfills the state's requirement of 120 classroom hours of fundamentals training. Course content includes all of the basics -- exterior, structure, roofing, plumbing, electric, etc. The final week consists of 40 hours of approved field training. At Bellingham Technical College, in the fundamentals of home inspection course the day students learn about wood destroying organisms, it is accurate to say that there are signs of wood destroying organisms everywhere.
Between the BTC collection of damaged wood, and a few pieces that are brought along by ace troubleshooter Dan Suomi -- Washington State Department of Agriculture -- we really do have a smorgasbord of damage.

I have been receiving many phone calls and Emails about this class and it seems that interest is high. This will be the first class we will have taught after the full home inspector licensing law is implemented, on July 1, 2010.
The Bellingham Technical College course includes not only 120 hours of classroom training.

Time just flies. It seems like the class just began, but at Bellingham Technical College we are ready to begin the final phase of the most recent "Fundamentals Of Home Inspection" class.
The final phase of the state approved course is 40 hours of field training and that begins today with Charles Buell taking the students on their first inspection. Charlie is a meticulous detail-oriented inspector so he is a perfect choice to run that first inspection. People often ask who takes the course. The next state approved fundamentals of home inspection course, a full 120 hours and that includes 40 hours of field training, begins in Bellingham on May 3, 2010.
In an effort to, at the least, teach our home inspector students about the law and the differences between structural pest inspectors and home inspectors, we try to arrange to have Dr. Dan Suomi of the WSDA come in and speak. Dan is the enforcement officer who oversees structural pest inspectors and educates them.

Time is running out for those people who are doing home inspections in Washington state without a license. As of July 1, 2010, anyone doing home inspections without a license is violating state law.
There are a number of people out there who have, previously, taken home inspector training but the hours were not sufficient to meet current state guidelines. Those inspectors who require supplemental education are operating under a tight time-frame.

The first two students, of our former BTC students, are signed up to take the newly offered supplemental training course that is mandatory for those home inspectors with past education who now require a refresher course in order to meet state licensing requirements.
Many home inspectors had previously taken home inspector education, but the courses did not meet current state guidelines. If students had taken a sufficient number of hours, then they are allowed to take 40 hours of supplemental training and that will qualify them to take the state exam.
