wood destroying organism: Misdiagnosis -- Anobiid Beetles - 07/03/11 04:11 PM
In the northwest we have a wood destroying insect pest known as the anobiid beetle. It is often, incorrectly, referenced as the powderpost beetle which is, in fact, a different pest.
The professional structural pest inspector, who hears someone reference powderpost beetles in the crawl space, knows what that person is talking

wood destroying organism: Wood Destroying Organism Infestations -- The Common Denominator - 03/11/11 06:48 PM
There is one factor that is involved in almost all issues involving wood destroying organisms. When we talk about wood destroying organisms we are referencing a fungal issue -- wood decay fungi or rot. And we are also talking about any of the wood destroying insects. In my state, that includes

wood destroying organism: See Them, Hear Them Chewing -- Multi-Media Termite Show - 02/15/09 09:55 AM
Subterranean termites: This is not a species of insect you want in your home. Granted, in the long haul they are a necessary part of nature -- turning wood back into compost. However, most of us would prefer it if they did not do that with the lumber in our homes.

Uninformed people often refer to the anobiid as the powderpost beetle, but that is the wrong terminology and refers to a

Previously, I wrote about wood boring beetles that are flatheaded borers. These are usually species of buprestid beetles. In the Pacific Northwest, there is another beetle species that has characteristics that are similar to the flatheaded borers. I am speaking of the cerambycid beetle. Like flatheaded borers, these insects create a larger exit hole. It is typically 1/4"

wood destroying organism: Wood Boring Beetles -- Flatheaded Borers - 07/09/08 08:51 AM
This is the first of a few blogs that will describe the common wood boring beetles that might be found at homes.
I will start with the flatheaded borer. Flatheaded borers tend to be non-reinfesting, at least at lumber in the house, so they are not considered to be a serious worry. That
