Danny M. Bishop, 1SG U.S. Army Retired was laid to rest at the Fort Benning Main Post Cemetery. Graveside services with Military Honors were held on a blustery rainy morning and just about ten minutes prior to the beginning of the service the rain stopped. Tears flowed as Taps sounded. A very professional and sympathetic Military Detail fired three volleys and gave a final salute to an old soldier.

Honoring Danny Bishop were family and friends, members and the Color Guard of VFW Post 665, where Danny was an active member and former Commander. Members of the American Legion Post 35 attended, as well as representatives of the Elks Lodge 111. Danny Bishop was a kind gentle man and an exemplary soldier. This former POW served in WWII, the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam. I will remember Danny M. Bishop for the rest of my days.

Attention: All Columbus Ga home owners and future landlords. Spring is here and in the next few days hundreds and thousands of home owners will begin the annual migration to the "garden centers". When making your landscape decisions remember to allow for future growth. The most important landscape decision will be where and what kind of trees you will plant. One old favorite is of course the Bradford Pear Tree. The problem in Columbus Ga with Bradford Pear trees is that many of the 15 - 25 year old trees have been damaged by wind or ice. The Bradford Pear is a soft wood tree, it spreads and sends trunk sized branches out in all directions. The weight of the branches is what makes this tree prone to wind and ice damage. I was lucky enough to find a Cleveland Pear Tree, wood, leaves and flowers are identical to the Bradford. The difference is its shape. The Cleveland Pear has a more upright growth pattern, it casts a smaller shadow and is less susceptible to wind and ice damage because of it's compact shape. Take a look and consider the Cleveland Pear when you go shopping for trees.

One of my favorite places to eat in Columbus Ga is the Bavarian House located on Whittlesey Road, behind the Main Street shopping ctr. I have to admit that I am partial to german cooking and Monika Washington the owner of the Bavarian House does an admirable job. If meat and potatoes don't drive you wild then maybe some of the fantastic german desserts will. The food is excellent and quite filling.

One fourth of the restaurant is a bar featuring the usual sports tv highlights and of course German and Domestic BEER. All of you familiar with schnitzel will really appreciate what the Bavarian House has to offer. Saturdays you will find a host of German ladies speaking in a variety of German dialects.

Good Food, Great Desserts and Beer, Wine and Spirits on occasion you will find a trio or quartet playing some of your favorite music. Octoberfest is reserved for live Polka music and dancers.

Look around when you come to visit, I'll be sitting on the right side, so stop and say hello.

This is the View when exiting Sam's Club and the new SuperWalmart located on Whittlesey. Just when we thought we had all the franchises conveniently located, up sprouts another. Construction of Schools, homes, businesses and half a dozen new hotels has contruction crews busy all over Columbus. This strip mall has become one of my favorites because it is conveniently located just 3 miles from home in North Columbus. Shopping and Dining are great and traffic is usually moderate.

Three miles of Interstate 185 connecting Columbus Ga to Ft Benning are still under construction. The crews have made tremendous progress moving earth and erecting barriers. Utility lines and sewer lines seem to have been taken care of and construction has begun on the bridge expansions required for the six lanes of traffic that will lead to Fort Benning and South Columbus.

Good News from Ft. Benning! Christian Bray and his first grade classmates began a letter writing campaign that may have life saving benefits for young Christian and his family. Christian Bray was diagnosed with epilepsy and cerebral palsy at birth and the recent efforts of these fantastic first graders caught the attention of J.D. Fenessy of the Milk-Bone Company. Milk-Bone is a Sponsor of Canine Assistants, a non profit organization that provides service dogs.

Christian has seizures and stops breathing when he is sleeping, hopes are that his new canine friend will alert his parents and allow Christian to become more independent. Service dogs can be trained to understand ninety separate commands and to recognize Christians specific needs. Specifically the four footed guardian will be able to open doors, turn on lights, pull wheel chairs and fetch. In May the Bray family will meet their newest family member and begin a bonding / training program to meet Christian's specific needs.

CONGRATULATIONS to the Bray Family, Christian's teacher and classmates your efforts were simply AWESOME. Wonderful kids and teachers make up the Columbus, Ft. Benning and Phenix City Community I am proud and happy to share this news with everybody.

Columbus Georgia, 11 SOA Protesters Sentenced to Jail

The annual SOA Watch Protest held in November of 2007 made the news in Columbus Ga., Fort Benning and a few other places. Eleven protesters who trespassed onto federal property during the rally were sentenced to jail terms by U.S. District Court Magistrate, G. Mallon Faircloth. A 76 year old blind man named Edwin Ross Lewinton was among the defendants sentenced to 90 days in jail. This was the fourth time that Lewinton had appeared before the court since 2003 and Magistrate Faircloth did offer him the option of 90 days house arrest. Lewinton would not hear of it and responded, "If a blind person were a drug dealer, he would be sent to jail."

The SOA Watch Protest is an annual event that has grown in numbers since the School of Americas training program was established at Fort Benning. Protesters want to change U.S. Policy in Latin America.

Interstate 185 leading from Columbus Ga to Fort Benning is being widened. Just before the Holdidays the construction area was the site of an 11 car accident. I urge all motorists to slow down in the area, show some patience and consideration for driveres attempting to merge into traffic.

Construction has progressed dramatically but it is expected to continue for another year and a half. Slow down and practice safe driving in 2008.

Lakebottom Park is a hub of activity whether the temperatures are soaring into the upper nineties or near freezing. I recently visited Lakebottom which is located between Garrard St and 13th Street and found people of all ages utilizing the walking trail. Mothers and infants were busy on the playground, a few brave souls were playing tennis and one lone sprinter was utilizing the track. Late afternoons, evenings and weekends you will find the ball fields filled to capacity and an occasional concert.

This is a great area for a brown bag lunch. It is a fantastic place to sit in the shade and watch the world go by for an hour. Driving around the park you will see some interesting architcture and homes in all price ranges. St. Elmo's shopping center is located on Garrard Street across from the park and now includes a bakery. It is always a great time to visit Lakebottom!

This is a reminder to all the good folks sitting on the fence when it comes time to make a home buying decision. I've had several clients that missed out on very nice homes recently. Questions arise a week later, "is that home with the four bedrooms and large yard still available"? And the answer lately has been, "no it is not". I am not encouraging my clients to accept anything less than the dream home they are looking for. However, that home may not be out there! After viewing eight to ten homes, you should have a pretty good idea of the available homes in your price range with the amenities you require.

The final decision rests with the purchasers and the ones that are a little indecisive have lost out on a couple of nice homes. Not quite what they had envisioned buying or living in, but comfortable and close to what they were looking for. There may be some trade offs, the grass is not as green, the kitchen border is fruit instead of vegetables, the kids rooms were a bit small, and a number of other slight differences. My realtor instincts lead me to suggest buying the home that comes closest to what you want. Realtors are not fortune tellers, we can't predict if a home will sell in the next 90 days or the next 90 minutes. If you the purchaser, have months to make your home buying decision then by all means take your time weigh the options and hope for a better home coming along. If your needs are limited to a matter of weeks, then sitting on the fence may not be a good idea.

Columbus Ga., fourteen area homes went under contract this week end. More than a dozen purchasers stopped looking at homes and made the decision to buy a new or existing home. Three homes were sold in the Alabama area, two in Meriwether County and nine in the Columbus area. The price ranges were $449,900 to $49,900. The average price was $186,000. What does all this mean in the grand scheme of things? Not much! It is a fact that people will always need and buy homes. It is a buyers market, particularly for homes that have lingered on the market a bit longer than usual. Is it a good time to buy a home? Always, depending on your needs.
The absolute best way to make an informed decision is to find a reputable realtor. Shop around, find someone you make a connection with and somebody you trust. It started several months ago, builders began offering incentives to new home buyers. Upgraded appliance packages are becoming the norm in mid priced homes. I've seen several offerings of 42 inch Flat Screen televisions included with the new home. Builders are offering to pay higher amounts of the closing costs involved in the transactions. Homes in general are taking several weeks longer to sell. These are all good things for buyers. Sellers make a note, there is alot of competition in Columbus Ga and the surrounding areas.

Buyers, don't get carried away with this news, everything has not been reduced. The great homes and fantastic locations are still selling in a matter of a few weeks. These fast sales have more than location working for them. Usually a very astute realtor and owner have set the sales price at a competitive level. These homes are also in great shape, all are immaculate, fresh paint inside and out is common, and there are no obvious repairs needed.

My experience when dealing with home buyers, particularly younger groups, is that they need a home now and they need it in move in condition. Many buyers will forego some amenities for a home that they can move into quickly. Sellers, make it easy to buy your home! Buyers there are some great bargains to be found if you have the time to make a thorough search. Good luck to both parties, seek out the help of a local realtor.

4th of July at the VFW

Today is a great time to get together with family and friends. Kids are looking forward to fireworks. Everybody has a grill smoking. Flags are waving on every street. It is a great day in the USA.

Keeping all that in mind, there is a small group of people working hard to make the day special for Veterans. The Local VFW works tirelessly to provide some sort of comfort for Veterans at Tuskegee. I am certain there are red white and blue cupcakes being delivered today. The Ladies auxiliary is always baking cakes either for delivery to the Veterans at Tuskegee or for a bake sale to raise money for the Veterans. Along with cookies and cakes the ladies bring news, reading materials, razors, socks, stationary and a whole list of things that make the day a bit more comfortable.

I would like to extend a sincere thanks to the ladies and gentlemen of VFW Post 665, located at 1824 Victory Drive Columbus Ga. Veterans working to help veterans.

Fort Benning, Columbus Ga: The Old Guard Fife and Drum Corp will be performing on June 30th at York Field, Fort Benning. The Annual Fourth of July celebration is scheduled for Saturday June 30th, this is the biggest Family celebration event of the year. This holiday event will be the first time that units from the Army's 3rd Infantry Regiment (Old Guard) will be performing at the Fort Benning Independence Day Celebration. The Old Guard Fife and Drum Corp will be represented along with the Commander in Chief's Guard and the Army Drill Team.

The Old Guard will be performing at 6:30 following a performance of the Silver Wings, Command Exihibition Parachute Team. At 7:30 pm The Mummies will entertain the kids and at 9:00pm Bo Bice of American Idol fame will perform songs from his newest album, "The Real Thing". The FIREWORKS GRAND FINALE will start at 10:00 pm.

The single GREATEST FAMILY DAY at Fort Benning gets underway mid afternoon at 3:00 with numerous inflatable acitivities for the kids. Vendors of all types will be there to add to the festivities, this is going to be a huge event and crowd. Come Early! Entrance is Free! Vendor activities are not!

Columbus Ga - Fort Benning - Ellerslie Ga - Developer faces Opposition!

The Columbus Ga, Fort Benning and Harris County area of Ellerslie Ga., will be affected by opposition to a new development proposed by developer, W.L. "Lynn" Willet. The proposed development by Willett is a subdivision to be placed on 73 acres and adjacent to Qual Ridge Subdivision. Rosie Richards a retired army spouse is leading the opposition to the development. Her concerns are traffic safety issues concerning the size of Maria Lane, water supply and disturbing the peace and tranquility of her neighborhood. Since Harris County already has a lot limit size of 2 acres the existing 73 acres would accomodate approximately 33 homes in the $300 to $450 thousand price range.

Willett has proposed to widen the road base of the existing paved Maria Lane and to asphalt the unpaved section of Maria Lane that would lead to the new development. He also suggested keeping the 50 foot right of way on the existing paved section of Maria Lane and extending that right of way to 60 feet on the unpaved portion. Lynn Willett further noted that a buffer could be maintained between the section of his development and the portion that backs up to the Qual Ridge neighborhood. He also addressed the water supply issue and stated that a double loop to the development would increase water pressure to the area.

It sounds like Mr. Willett has addressed all of the issues that arose at the preliminary hearing of the Harris County Planning Commission. The commission recomended 4-2 against rezoning and July 3rd will be the date for the actual vote to rezone or deny the proposed development.

Columbus Ga. NEWS: The initial phase of the planned AFLAC expansion is completed. The Corporate Ridge AFLAC Campus is located on 104 acres and the first phase of construction is finished. Over the next 5 years the next two phases will include new facilities for the IT department, which is presently housed on Wynnton Rd Columbus Ga. The over all economic impact has yet to be guesstimated, but the 2000 new jobs that will be created are great news for the city and surrounding areas.

Fort Benning, 3rd Heavy Brigade, Bronze Star Recipients

Last week on June 8th, two members of the 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team were awarded the Army's fourth highest honor. Col. Wayne Grigsby presented the Bronze Star to Staff Sgt. Michael Henderson and Pfc. Stephanie McCulley at Forward Operating Base Hammer.

In an incident that occurred in the Salman Pak area on may 8th, Henderson and McCulley responded with first aid at an IED explosion even before the smoke cleared. The explosion caused the death of Spc. Blake C. Stephens and Spc. Kyle A. Little. The lightning reactions of Henderson and McCulley saved the life of a third soldier. The pair gave no thought to their own safety or the danger around them, their only thoughts were to get to the disabled vehicle and treat the injured.

Thank you for your courage, your leadership and a job well done.

Fort Benning Ga - New Fitness Center - Opens June 29th

FORT BENNING NEWS: A new fitness center is named in honor of Sgt. 1st Class Paul R. Smith. Smith was the first MEDAL OF HONOR recipient during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Construction of the 18 million dollar state of the art facility was begun over a year ago. The new two story family fitness center will be unveiled on June 29th. Upon entering this high tech fitness extravaganza, the first thing members will encounter is a two story rock wall. The Sgt 1st Class Paul R. Smith Physical Fitness Center will house a regulation basketball court with three sets of movable bleachers that can convert the court into three practice courts or two standard volleyball courts. This is just the beginning of a long list of features and equipment that will be available. Besides short term day care service, there are serious equipment and workout rooms available with high definition televisions. A zero depth ADA compliant entry recreation pool, a whirlpool, double enclosed racquetball courts, aerobics rooms, stationary bike facilities and training rooms make up the rest of the facility.

The location of the facility is near the one mile track across from the former Infantry Hall. There will also be additional sports fields and facilties constructed in the area. This is a place for Soldiers and their Families to go to get in shape, relax and enjoy themselves. Ribbon cutting ceremonies will be held on June 29th at 11. Sgt 1st Class Paul Smith will be attending.
