The Origin of the "Stick Style" Victorian

I had fun researching and writing about the Origin of the Tudor Style Home and decided to do some research on another type of beautiful home that I have listed for sale.

The home I am referring to is a historic home located in Wrightsville Boro, York County PA. The style had me stumped a bit. Was it victorian? Was it colonial? It didn't look quite like a Federal... or did it? All I knew for sure was that it was built right before the historic "burning of the bridge" that took place in Wrightsville PA, which played a major role in the turn of events during the Civil War. When the Confederate army reached Wrightsville (which was a point of crossing into Lancaster County and towards Philadelphia) the Union militia burned the mile-long bridge, thrwarting the advances of the Confederates. Wrightsville is located just about 40 miles East of Gettysburg, where the largest Civil War battle took place, so you can imagine how important this Wrightsville battle was at the time.

As I was researching I came across a photo of a home with a certain description .... and BINGO!! THAT WAS IT!

I present to you -- the "Stick Style Victorian". This is also many times referred to as the "plain" victorian, because it lacks some of the features that ornate Victorian homes are typically known for. Yet, it has distinct features of its own that really stand out, and there is nothing really "plain" about it!

A "stick style Victorian" was mainly popular during the period between 1860-1890, when homebuilders realized that they can build a great home out of 2x4's and flat banding strips of wood. Some early homes may appear quite rare these days because many of these homes have been covered up with siding as they have aged, and have hidden the discriminating signs of what indicates that they are a "stick style Victorian".

These features include:

    •    Half-timbering - similar to the Tudor style
    •    Geometric lines and patterns
    •    Gables and Dormers

Unlike Tudors, the half-timbering found in Stick Style Victorian homes is "visual" only - meaning that they have the appearance of half-timbers but are just wooden pieces - sticks - placed in geometric half-timber patterns on the wooden clapboard siding. They aren't real timbers at all, but rather stick banding creating visual patterns!

Patterns and Geometric lines are also visual - they are wooden and many times painted differently than the rest of the house, highlighting their appearance and creating visual patterns.

Gables and Dormers are present, and they are enhanced by the visual patterns of the half-timbers and/or geometric patterns that are all stick-built.

The term "stick style victorian" was first named by Vincent Scully, who discovered that these homes were all influenced by American and English Gothic, Revival, Swiss chalets and German and French manors.

Other tell-tale signs of a Stick Style Victorian:
    •    they are rectangular buildings
    •    they are made of wood siding, or clapboard
    •    the roofs are steep and gabled
    •    they have decorative trusses, braces, brakets
    •    half-timbering banding is visual or decorative, but not structural (unlike a true Tudor which is mainly structural)

After the Civil War, when the country started flourishing once again financially with the second industrial revolution and the restructuring of the country, the stick-style Victorian became a past fashion, perhaps even purposely forgotten because they were "plain". Homes started to become more ornate, and the simple, "plain", stick-style Victorian was lost...

Until now...

Here, in historic Wrightsville Boro, is an authentic Stick Style Victorian available for sale. This home is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, and is a true gem. The home is located in the historic district, where all of the homes in the 3 block area are remnants of the Civil War battleground that changed the course of history. Cannon balls, perhaps those forged in the Michaux Forest iron furnaces, fell around this home. But it still stands, a testament to the quality construction of it's time and a testament to our rich American history.

iPhones don't belong on a Weekend camping trip. Do they?

I'm an empty nester this weekend. Well, I have the dogs to keep me company, but still.

Dear hubby and the boys are in Michaux State Forest on a "boys only" camping trip. Along with them is our older nephew, our brother in law, and my husband's cousin who is more like a brother. So, six men all alone in the woods. They were SO looking forward to this! The only one missing is a younger nephew from New Jersey who is away at Boy Scout camp this week. The cousin came all the way from Long Island for the trip. They older nephew arrive earlier this week from New Jersey to spend a few days with us and to check out hubby's business, while the brother in law took a very rare few days away from his own very busy work schedule. Its rare that they are all together, and I know they're having a blast.

Still, I receive this photo in an email from my hubby's iPhone. By the way, iPhones have NO business being on a camping trip! That's not exactly what I'd call "roughing it". Still, it was a pretty enough picture that I just had to share.

They are not in the state campground ~ they are really roughing it by sleeping in tents in the forest (read that as "no facilities"). I hope they find a place to shower before they get home, because I can just imagine the stink on all of them.

They were'n't having much luck fishing when this photo was taken earlier today, as I was told via the cellphone call I received earlier this afternoon.

"What are you using for bait"? I innocently asked ~ knowing I'm a far greater fishermanwoman than all of them...

He mentioned all kinds of stuff that I knew wouldn't have an impact on the bass they were half-heartedly trying to catch (I think they were catching more "zzzzz's" than fish).

"Crickets" I told him. "You need to find a cricket and use it for bait". Hmmm... I gave up my secret, but that was the bait that my brother and I use to use when we'd go fishing for bass in the Poconos when we were kids. Now you all know.

By the end of the day today, they did catch a few fish, which they tossed back in to the lake in hopes that they'd be bigger next year when they plan on the Big Camping Trip #2.

Michaux State Forest is comprised of 85,000 acres. Wow, that is huge. It spans Adams, Franklin and Cumberland Counties. It's finest resource, besides timber, is the potable fresh water that it supplies to the many municipalities in the area.

Large iron companies owned these lands during the 18th & 19th century, where great balls of iron were mined and furnaced ~ literally. Cannon balls that were used in the Revolutionary War were formed in these furnaces.

So, I've been "holding down the fort" at home since they left Friday morning at 8am. I have to admit, I kind of like the peace and quiet, but most importantly, I'm super glad that the boys (all of them) got to spend some special time together now that older son is back from school in Florida, and before younger son leaves for school in Denver in just two weeks. Fathers and sons and cousins, oh my.

What a great weekend they'll remember for a long, long time.

The Origin of the Tudor Style

Do you know the origin of the Tudor style home?

There are a number of elegant, stately Tudor homes for sale in Lancaster County.

Tudor homes of today are based on old English themes or medieval times. The architecture evolved during the 15th Century and lasted for well over 100 years into the 17th Century.

The style is named after the ruling dynasty of those times, the Tudors, which included Henry VII and Elizabeth I.

Characteristics of a Tudor home include

exposed half-timbers,
stucco,
cross gables,
and many times turrets and steeply pitched roofs.
Windows are usually small paned or diamond patterned.
Many times second floors were added protruding over the first floor due to the tight corridors in the Medieval streets (called "jettied")

Exterior elements were also brought inside, with rich dark woodwork throughout and brick and stone flooring. Even the furniture was heavy with carved detail and heavy iron latches and pulls. The influences of church came into play with stained glass and painted window panes, often highlighted with rich, jewel-toned velvet and damask fabrics and window coverings. During the rifts in the church, resources that would have gone towards building newer, larger cathedrals were instead used to build larger, stately homes.

Today's Tudor home is patterned after the original style, with the half-timbering being cosmetic rather than a structural component of the post & beam construction.

Modern Suburban estates became the hub of the Tudor style, with well to do homeowners tending to lean toward this style as the suburbs grew in popularity. Fewer Tudors are built today because of the added expense of all the authentic details.

Many feel a Tudor home evokes a feeling of warmth and substance.

In Lancaster County, Tudor homes are found throughout a number of neighborhoods, including the prestigious neighborhood of School Lane Hills in Lancaster Township.

There is also an authentic Tudor at a much more affordable price range located on a wooded lot in East Hempfield Township - 2950 Kings Lane.

Historic Lititz Boro - Museums and Historical Sites -- Lancaster County, PA

There are many year-round events that take place in Historic Lititz Boro, and I thought I would repeat this post for those who are new to the area and would like to learn more about Lititz. Here are a number of other things to do while exploring the quaint boro of Lititz PA.

Moravian Church Square of Lititz PA- Originally built in 1759, the Brethren's House was also used as a military hospital in Lancaster PA during the Revolutionary War. The Sister's House was built in 1758, and is part of Linden Hall, the oldest girls boarding school in the U.S. Also known as the "Brother's House and Sister's House" - the genders were separated for church services during those times in Lancaster. The Moravian Church was built in 1787, but has been through a number of renovations since then. Take a self-guided walking tour, starting at the Church Square in Lititz PA, 200 block of E. Main Street.

Archives Museum of Lititz PA- While enjoying the tranquility at the Moravian Church Square - take time to stop by the Archives Museum where you will find exhibits of documents, furniture and early implements from the historic Lititz Settlement. Along the West end of Church Square on the 200 Block of E. Main Stree, Lititz PA.

Candy Americana Museum of Lititz PA- at the Wilbur Chocolate Factory -- One of my personal favorite treats in Lancaster PA - the Wilbur Bud - is manufactured here. Mmmmm - it beats Hershey's Kisses hand's down, in my personal opinion! Visit the Wilbur Chocolate Factory while in Lititz PA and take a self-guided tour -- including a short videotape and small working kitchen where the candy and chocolates are made in front of your eyes. Lititz Museum - Enjoy a Lititz PA history timeline in this historic 1700's home located on the 100 block of E. Main Street, Lititz PA. Exhibits include area artifacts and a travelling exhibit room, the Sutter Room dedicated to local General Sutter, and the Gardens. Next door, you will find the historic Johannes Mueller House built in 1792. Here you will view how a Moravian settler lived in historic Lititz PA.

Wetherburn's unfortunate fire - Fire Safety Tips for Your Family

My son came home this evening to ask me if I had heard about "the fire". He's like the kid on the corner selling newspapers.. "Extra! Extra!" always informing me of the goings-on in the community and world, when I seem to be the last to know. Nevertheless, word spread pretty quickly today about a house in a neighboring subdivision, which burned to the ground late last night. Wetherburn is a popular neighborhood in Manheim Township, and the shock of hearing the news of one of it's homes burning to the ground had me reeling. To learn that a resident of the home, an elderly woman who used a walker to get around, lost her life in the fire, is just heartbreaking, and I extend my sympathies to the family and her loved ones.

I inadvertently threw out today's newspaper in one of my "gotta clean up this mess" chaotic runs through the house, so I didn't see the article. But, I found it online on LancNews. It's disturbing to see the amount of damage, especially since this is my town where I've lived and worked for over 21 years. I have friends and clients who live in that subdivision. The shocking truth is... this could have been anyone's home.

So, my plea to you all is .....

please check your smoke detectors. Please be sure that they are all in good working order; test them regularly.
please have emergency phone numbers nearby. If you live alone, please be sure that your neighbors have the contact information of your loved ones nearby in case of an emergency.
please have a plan of evacuation. This would include teaching your children what to do in case of an emergency, and having escape ladders from upper level windows. This would also include specific plans for evacuating the elderly and young children. Statistics show that elderly and young children and most often the casualties in a house fire.
please have your furnace, other mechanicals and electrical systems checked to be sure everything is in good working order and up to code. A friend's elderly mother's home caught fire one night a few years ago when the dishwasher shorted out. Luckily, only the kitchen in that instance was damaged but her mother's life was spared. Faulty wiring CAN cause a fire, even in your tried and true appliances that have seemed to work well for years.

Authorities don't yet know the cause of last night's fire, but hopefully these reminders and tips can help safeguard your loved ones and your home from a similar fate. Stay safe, everyone.

Lititz, PA - Lovin' Lititz and the Lititz Craft Show - fun days ahead!

This is an activity-packed weekend for those who are Lovin' Lititz Every Second! The enormously successful community-based event takes place every second Friday of the month, with activities planned and locals and tourists alike taking part in the friendly, family-based events. This Friday, August 8th, Lititz is having a "Luau in Lititz"

But wait ~ there's more! This weekend is the very popular Lititz Rotary Craft Show! One of the largest juried Craft Shows in the Northeast, the event is planned to take place throughout Lititz Springs Park and up and down Main Street and Broad Street on Saturday, August 9th, from 8 am - 4pm. Craftsmen from all over the country come to this show to display and sell their wares. Visitors plan their vacations around this particular weekend year after year. And, locals brace themselves and hold on for the ride!

I have to drive through downtown Lititz this coming Saturday, and am already planning my route since the major roads will be closed to traffic. There are specific parking areas throughout Lititz indicated in the map here for those planning to attend. Hopefully, I can spare some free time and peruse the fine craftsmanship that this show attracts.

The prodigal son finally returns

The boy is due to come home today! Okay, the young man, I should say, as he's no longer a mere boy.

After being away at school for two years, oldest son is coming home today. I'm so excited! In anticipation, I had his room painted this past week, and have scheduled new carpet to be installed. I admit, it wasn't timed exactly right ~ the carpet is being installed AFTER his arrival, as is the new furniture I ordered. So, he won't really have a place to sleep yet ~ especially since the guest room is also being redone. But, he's coming home and that's the important news!

My husband flew to Florida to help pack up his apartment. After two years of living there, he's amassed quite an amount of "stuff". I told him to donate everything ~ cookware, utensils, linens ~ I just don't have a need for them. He sold his furniture for about $35 ~ just about the whole lot of it ~ and gave whatever else was left to other students and friends staying behind. So now his entire life is packed up in his Jetta while he and his dad drive home. I'm glad they had these past few days to spend together, while I've stayed behind "minding the fort". They made it as far as North Carolina yesterday, when they finally stopped for the night for some much needed rest.

So, today's the day.

Now, as much as I am thrilled that he is coming home, I hope he doesn't stay! Hopefully he'll be landing a job within the next few weeks in his field. His goal is to end up in New York, where I know my family and friends there will keep an eye out for him. He has an extensive network eager to help him identify and land a position in his field of film production.

But for now, the big production is his anticipated arrival. Finally, we'll be a "family" again, with everyone here ~ if even for a short while. At the end of the month, younger son leaves for school in Denver, and it will just be me, dad and the dogs once again. So, I am going to enjoy this month and every single moment with both of my boys. Hopefully August will seem to stand still and not fly by like the rest of the summer has. I need to grasp every moment, and hold on tightly.

.... I hope he did his laundry before he packed it all in the car!

Is your Granite countertop causing a positive Radon reading? Read this!

While playing around with my new iPhone last week (before I decided to trade it in for a Centro) I had an opportunity to view the latest news articles from The New York Times directly on my phone.

An interesting article caught my attention, and held it. What's Lurking in Your Countertop is an article regarding the possibility of radon gas being emitted into your home - you guessed it - right from your countertops. Not any ol' countertops, of course. Granite countertops apparently are begining to be noticed as the cause of higher radon levels being read on monitors placed in or near the kitchen.

Well, that just takes the cake! I had plans on at some point installing granite in my home, but think I might need to think this through a bit more. Not every slab of granite, according to the New York Times article, will have a high reading of radon. But, you just never know.

I wonder if there will soon be a market for "radon-free" granite.

Reading this article really made me think of my sister-in-law, who not only has a huge kitchen filled with granite tops, but she also has a large portion of her foyer and hallway all tiled in granite flooring. I'm fairly certain that she's never tested her home for radon, and I'm going to have to have a discussion with her and educate her a bit. I would really be curious to see if she happens to have a higher level, if any at all, in her kitchen or other parts of the home perhaps due to the large amount of granite she has installed.

Now, the real test for me is to see if I can access the same article just as quickly on my Centro as I did on the iPhone! All joking aside, I really thought this was an interesting article and needed to share. I certainly don't mean to be an alarmist, but if you are going to be testing for radon in yor home, be sure to have a monitor placed on your granite kitchen countertop, as well!

Helloooooo everyone! I can't believe it's been so long since I've last posted, but I did want to drop by and say hello to my fellow 'Rainers. There are so many changes around here, that I hardly know where to start! I've been very busy lately, with not only real estate but graduations, weddings and other family obligations. It seems there is something going on just about every week.

I can't believe the summer feels like it's halfway over already. I have yet to go back to Florida to help my son pack up his apartment, which I think will be happening before the end of the month. Then it will be off to Denver, CO, for a parent/student orientation for my other son, before taking him back there for school at the end of August.

Besides real estate, family, and other obligations, there's no time to blog! But I miss you all, and I will be back once things settle down a bit.

Hope everyone in Active Rain-land is fine and well and enjoying the summer. Don't forget to take some time for R&R (maybe I'll listen to my own advice one day!)

Grrrrrr......

I'm having network problems today. Printer problems. Cell phone problems. Settlement problems.

WHAT ELSE CAN GO WRONG!!

I need to print out an extension for a settlement -- and my printer is not working right. We had a power outage some time overnight, and all the clocks in the house are blinking, so I can barely know what time it is.

The settlement I was suppose to be having today is not happening. Yet. Hence, the need for the extension.

I synced my Treo to my laptop via bluetooth, and it locked up on me. Twice.

I have a feeling it all has to do with the power outage. I didn't even know there was a storm last night.

I've been spending a lot of time this week in an area where I have no cell reception, and today is my day to catch up on everything - and the world is not cooperating!

Grrrrr......

Okay, enough ranting today. Time to get a grip and get on with it. I just needed to let off some steam!

Today was a busy day all around with regards to real estate in Lancaster County, but we can never be too busy to forget about the importance of community service. This marked the day that our Long & Foster Lancaster office took part in it's community service day by organizing a blood drive. I must admit, that I haven't donated blood in several years, but can certainly understand how important it is to do so. I didn't realize, though, what a fine-tuned machine these Red Cross of the Susquehanna Valley volunteers run!

After checking in, reviewing the documents regarding who can and can't donate (be careful if you are on certain prescription drugs and review your medical history carefully) and answering some highly personal questions, I waited around until it was my turn. I admit, it took a bit longer than I had expected, and I was worried that I would be late for an appointment. Luckily for me, my clients were understanding after my partner Rick Brown explained to them that I was *a bit tied* up and would be meeting them in the reception lobby as soon as possible.

After being called for my turn, I tried to NOT be nervous about it. I was, I have to admit, but it was really only slightly uncomfortable and not painful at all. Apparently, I have slow moving blood, but I did finally fulfill my share of the donation. I even tried taking a little power nap while I was laying on the very comfy cots they had set up. When all was said and done, I was escorted to the yummy snack table to rest, gather myself, and enjoy some delicious cookies and refreshments.

Bandaged up, I headed upstairs to meet my clients and go on with the day. I do admit, a few hours later I started to feel a bit lightheaded, but nothing that I couldn't handle and that a smokehouse burger from Ruby Tuesday's didn't fix (Yes, I convinced my hubby to have dinner out tonight).

Yes, we all give a little bit of ourselves to everyone we meet throughout the day. Everyone seems to pull us in all different directions, whether it is family, clients, our children and sometimes even strangers. Sometimes it exhausts us. Other times it leaves us feeling exhilirated. Today I can truly say that "i gave at the office", and I hope it does someone a world of good. Whew! What a busy week I just put behind me!

Besides dealing with Lancaster Real Estate related stuff, such as showings, inspections and indecisive buyers and sellers; and personal stuff such as out of town guests - I had not one, but TWO graduations in my family!

All week long, the opening lyrics to Sunrise, Sunset have been running through my mind. Okay, this wasn't a wedding of sorts, but it's a milestone that seemed to come before its time. Is this the little boy I carried?... Is this the little boy at play?... I don't remember growing older... When did they? When did they get to be so tall? Wasn't it yesterday when they were small? Sunrise.. Sunset. Swiftly go the days...

Youngest son just graduation last Wednesday from Manheim Township high school. He has attended Manheim Township schools since kindergarten, and it was so wonderful to watch his childhood friends graduate right alongside him. I heard names announced that I recognized, yet had I bumped into these young adults on the street (or the mall) I never would have known it was them. I just can't believe how the years have flown by.

What words of wisdom can I give them? What can I say to ease their way?

Before we had time to finish our graduation celebration, we had to hop on a plane and make our way to Orlando Florida, where oldest son was graduating from FullSail University with his bachelors degree in Film Production. Whew! Was it hot down there! I heard there was a full-fledged heatwave going on back home in Lancaster as well. I was hoping for some time to have a little R & R by the pool while in Florida, and I was determined to come back with some sort of a tan, but that didn't happen. We were so busy CELEBRATING! and cleaning and shopping for some of oldest son's essentials, that we didn't have any time to "enjoy" the hot Florida weather.

It was great seeing him, since we've all been apart since Christmas. Unfortunately, he isn't coming home just yet as he's comitted to finishing up some projects. Hopefully, they'll turn out to be paying projects at some point! I am really looking forward to having him home soon, although it doesn't appear it will be before the end of July.

Younger son is enjoying some R & R at the Delaware Shore this week with his fellow graduate friends, Oldest son is still in the Florida sun, and Pops and Mom are back at the daily grind. We are empty nesters, except for our two pups. Isn't something wrong with this scenario?? I need a vacation from all of this celebrating! Either way, I am super proud of these kids and I couldn't have asked for a happier week. And, I'm sure I'll be singing Sunrise, Sunset for a few days to come.

Now, as a disclosure, I would like to add that this home is my parents' home. The decision to downsize has taken them months -- perhaps even years. They have finally made the decision after my father had a health scarel last year and my mother just recently was diagnosed with neuropathy. Lancaster PA readies itself for major film production

Lancaster County and the Susquehanna Valley will be busting at the seams soon, with some top notch actors and actresses gathering in the area to work on a new feature film. "Another Harvest Moon" featuring Ernest Borgnine, Doris Roberts, Anne Meara and Cybill Shepard, and a few other noted celebrities. Many of you might know Doris Roberts as "Marie", everyone's favorite nosey mother from "Everybody Loves Raymond". And of course, everyone knows academy-award winning Ernest Borgnine.

"Another Harvest Moon" brings Borgnine out of retirement, at 91 years old, and gives him an opportunity to work on a film that deals with senior citizens, the effects of a stroke, and the friendships forged in a nursing home. I'm sure it will hit home with a number of us who are dealing with aging parents, as well as baby boomers who are facing decisions such as the ones brought to the forefront in this soon to be made film.

Pennsylvania is home to tax credits available to independant filmmakers - an effort that is of course near and dear to my heart for many reasons. Pennsylvania offers a 25% tax credit to filmmakers who spend 60% of their budget filming in our fine Commonwealth. Besides the fact that my son is an up and coming young filmmaker, the producers and production company for this particular new film, Aurora Film & Music, are dear friends of mine (some have even been clients) and I'm excited that they have an opportunity to work on such a fine feature. Aurora is a Lancaster-based independant film company who is embarking on their first major film production with the production of this movie. I know how hard and dedicated they have been over the past year to bringing this story, originally a screenplay written by Jeremy Thomas Black, to the big screen. It will be directed by another former Lancastrian, Greg Schwartz.

You can read the details of the movie in the recent Lancaster Newspapers article and interview of Aurora partner and film producer, Chad Taylor.

Lancaster City is not only home to fine arts such as the galleries on Prince Street, or "Gallery Row"; but is also home to art on the screen. Besides Aurora Film and Music, Haverstick Films is another local independant film company, who has been hard at work with post production for their feature film, "Home", starring Marcia Gay Harden. "Home" is a production that my son had the opportunity to intern for, and my husband and his recording studio, Moontree Studios (co-owned with a partner in Aurora) worked on some of the sound editing.

These are exciting times for not only Pennsylvania, but for Lancaster City arts as a whole. I hope that this fine cast of actors enjoy their time spent in Lancaster during their shoot, because we certainly have a lot to offer!
