kris johnston: More Go To Remedies - 06/02/12 06:42 AM
Here are the next 2 Dr Oz Go To Remedies: 1. Need an energy boost? Drink green tea. It has lots of energizing phenols but a quarter of the cafffeine of coffee, so you won't get jittery. Avoid sodas and energy drinks, which give you a quick sugar rush, but then you crash. You can also spend 10 minutes in the sun. This helps suppress the production of sleep-inducing melatonin. 2. Are you constipated? Fiber helps because it pushes everything out. Along with fiber-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and beans, you can up your fiber

kris johnston: Go To Remedies - 06/01/12 06:47 AM
I was forwarded an article by Dr Oz about certain remedies, and I thought I would share it over a few posts...Here are the first 2 remedies: 1. Can't sleep? If you are already in bed, visualize your limbs falling asleep, starting with your toes and working up to your head. The concentration this requires is an energy drain, so it makes you more tired as the body lets go. Valerian root tea is another standby. It has a sedative effect. For short-term insomnia, you can take pure melatonin, but take just 1mg, not the 5 you see in some over

kris johnston: Final Summer Food Myths - 05/27/12 06:30 AM
Here are the final 2 Summer Food Myths from the Rachel Ray Magazine: 1. MYTH: Grilled foods up your cancer risk. FALSE! Grilled food is safe; it's charring you should avoid--that black, ashy layer may contain risk-increasing chemicals. To nix charring, cook at a lower temp to stop flare ups, and marinate with antioxidant rich herbs. Research suggests that taking these steps can help fend off the concerning compounds. By the way, the chemicals form only on animal proteins. If you like grilled vegetables with dark, crispy bits, have at them!2. MYTH: Drinking hot tea on a blazing

kris johnston: More Summer Food Myths - 05/26/12 06:22 AM
Here are the second pair of Summer Food Myths fromn the Rachel Ray Magazine: 1. MYTH: All veggie burgers are good for you. FALSE! You may feel virtuous grilling up a veggie burger instead of a thick beef patty, but not all meatless burgers are created equal. Some are highly processed and packed with salt. Just one patty can have up to 400mg of sodium, which is 25 percent of your daily allowance. Before you buy, read the label. You want to see veggies high up in the ingredient list. 2. MYTH: When you leave plastic bottles in the

kris johnston: Summer Food Myths Series - 05/24/12 05:48 AM
I found some great info in a recent Rachel Ray Magazine that I thought I would share with you in a 3 part series, of 2 myths a piece. Enjoy! If you pass on the mayonnaise-heavy salads at the backyard barbecue and worry about leaving your plastic water bottle in the sun, relax. Here's the straight scoop on staying healthy when it's hot out. 1. MYTH. Mayo-based salads left unrefrigerated can make you sick. FALSE! Mayo is very safe for two reasons: It's pasteurized at the factory and it's full of acid, which creates an environment that stops harmful bacteria

kris johnston: Skin-Tracking Tools - 05/21/12 06:29 AM
A friend forwarded me this info and I think it is GREAT!Doing a monthly skin check could save your life. Look for these red flags: a very dark or black mole, a spot that's bleeding or rapidly growing, or a new mole that's bigger than a #2 pencil eraser. It's hard to remember what your skin looks like from week to week, so monitor it with one of these tips or tools: 1. Use the photo trick. Put a dime next to the suspicious mole and take a picture on your phone or camera. Do this once a month for

kris johnston: Don't Forget These Parts! - 05/17/12 07:56 AM
A few days ago I did a post on the importance of sunscreen and some accompanying tips. But, it is also very important not to forget some other areas to cover with sunscreen when you enjoy your summer activities. Even though they may not be the first areas you think of to cover with sunscreen, certain "easy to forget" places are very susceptible to sun damage and skin cancer. Four often forgotten or overlooked (but important to protect) spots include: 1. LIPS 2. Back Of Ears 3. Part In Your Hair/Scalp 4. Top Of Feet So, the next time

kris johnston: Feet, Who Knew? - 05/16/12 06:35 AM
Did you know that 88 percent of American women wear shoes that are too small for them? Your feet expand due to weight gain, pregnancy and even age. Tendons and ligaments lose some of their elasticity as you get older, so you may grow a half size every 10 years after age 40! Avoid pinched toes by having your feet measured each time you buy new footwear. I always thought your feet shrunk as you got older. I can't remember the last time that I got my foot measured, so I will have to do this next time!

kris johnston: Boost Your WillPower - 05/09/12 06:21 AM
A friend sent me an article that said if you beat a sugar craving in the afternoon, you are more likely to give in to temptation later in the day. That is because willpower is a limited resource that depletes as you perform acts of self control. Makes sense, right? Willpower is like a muscle that gets stronger from exercise. Build it up by changing small behaviors in positive ways----over time you will get better control over all your actions. Start by tackling easy goals and gradually work your way up to the more difficult ones.

kris johnston: More Pantry Tips! - 05/08/12 05:57 AM
So you want to be organized, but have storage containers that look neat too. Here are some helpful hints for getting the most out of your pantry containers. BE SQUARE. Square bottoms take up less space, as do containers that nest next to each other. GO CLEAR. Clear is great because you can see at a glance what you have. Clear acrylic containers with a center ring that pops down for an airtight seal are one of the most popular things on the market right now. DO THE HAND TEST. Can you open the container with one

kris johnston: Peas...Did you know? - 05/06/12 06:57 AM
I love fresh, crisp peas. Even though they are a little veggie, they are packed with great nutritional value. Here's some of the good things peas do for you: 1. Stop inflammation in its tracks. There are so many vitamins in peas (A,B6,C,etc) that fight free radicals, those cell-damaging molecules. Peas also contain a good amount of plant-based omega-3 fatty acids, another important nutrient for keeping inflammation in check. 2. Keep your blood sugar steady. A combination of fiber, protein and a low glycemic index, means that peas will fill you up, and keep you fueled. 3. Protect
