Alec Baldwin Uncovers Elephant Abuse Under the Big Top
With a quarter-century of  experience behind him, Academy Award nominee Alec Baldwin has enough big- and small-screen hits under his belt to speak with authority about the entertainment industry. So when this card-carrying PETA member reports that a show-biz act appalls him, audiences everywhere should listen. In his shocking exposé, Alec reveals what circuses' bright lights and colorful costumes cannot hide: that elephants who are forced to perform are confined, whipped, and beaten for each show. Watch the video now.
Alec, who has hosted Saturday Night Live a record 16 … (11 comments)

peta: Good News From Peta! - 03/06/12 06:49 AM
Dear Kristin, I have an exciting update to share with you regarding PETA's efforts to encourage the airline industry to refuse shipments of primates destined for cruel experiments. After learning that TAM and Hainan Airlines were each facilitating shipments of monkeys to laboratories in North America, PETA fired off urgent letters to each company urging it to join the growing number of airline and cargo companies that refuse to handle such shipments. Our supporters also sprang into action, and many of you sent messages to these airlines urging them to prohibit the transportation of primates for use in experiments. I am … (18 comments)

peta: Help Save Helpless Cats at Washington University in St. Louis!!! - 02/21/12 05:28 AM
Dear Kristin, Despite protests from you and more than 90,000 other PETA supporters, Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL) continues to use cats and ferrets in cruel and archaic intubation training exercises in conjunction with St. Louis Children's Hospital. During this harmful exercise, the animals have hard plastic tubes forced down their delicate windpipes for intubation training—even though modern, superior simulators are available and widely used across the country for this very purpose. WUSTL can try to ignore the recommendations of leading medical organizations and experts in the field who strongly endorse the use of simulators for intubation training—but we can't … (9 comments)

Shelter for Tyson—Finally

Written by Jeff Mackey

Say "Hi" to Tyson, one of the newest recipients of a custom-built doghouse from PETA, along with lots of straw bedding to help keep out the cold. As you can see from the "before" picture below, he desperately needed it. All four (!) of Tyson's previous (flimsy) "shelters" had broken. But now he has a sturdy, custom-built doghouse for cold, wet winter nights—and since it's built to last, he can count on it for years to come. Tyson's family agreed to have him neutered, so PETA will … (20 comments)

Feds Slap Primate Prison With Heavy Fine
Written by Jeff Mackey

There's good news today in a case we told you about in May 2010: The U.S. Department of Agriculture has hit the Texas Biomedical Research Institute—formerly the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research—with a fine of more than $25,000 over serious violations of the Animal Welfare Act. The facility has repeatedly allowed primates to escape from their cages and injure themselves and others, including humans.

The stiff fine comes after PETA filed a formal complaint with the agency in 2010 after two baboons imprisoned at Texas Biomed … (10 comments)

HOW TO: Help a Chained Dog This Month

All too often, "man's best friend" is sentenced to a miserable life of solitary confinement, trapped at the end of a chain. In order to raise awareness of these "forgotten" dogs, PETA has declared January "Unchain a Dog" Month, and we have just what you need to help a lonely, neglected dog in your neighborhood.
How You Can Help There are two basic ways to improve the life of a "backyard dog":
Work with guardians to help backyard dogs in non-emergency situations. Begin by talking to guardians about what their dogs … (16 comments)

peta: Victory for Elephants in Santa Ana, Calif.! - 12/17/11 10:14 AM
Dear Kristin,
I'm thrilled to share some exciting news with you. Thanks to all of you who took part in our more than yearlong campaign, the city of Santa Ana, Calif., has just announced that it will no longer offer elephant rides. This means that the Santa Ana Zoo will stop supporting the miserable treatment of elephants who spend much of their lives chained by two legs, barely able to take a single step forward or backward, and are dominated and controlled by bullhooks—barbaric training devices that resemble a fireplace poker. These can be seen in video footage from Animal Defenders International … (11 comments)

A Historic Day for Chimpanzees
Update: Making this historic day for animals even more significant, NIH has announced that it will accept all the recommendations of the IOM committee and that it will stop funding any new experiments on chimpanzees! All current experiments on chimpanzees will be reevaluated, and many may be ended. Until NIH conducts another review of the situation, none of the NIH-owned chimpanzees currently living in laboratories but not being experimented on will have to endure further experiments. This includes the chimpanzees at the Alamogordo facility.
The below was originally posted December 15, 2011 at … (14 comments)

Dear Kristin, I'd like to share some great and exciting news! After years of campaigning by animal advocates, a group of 38 chimpanzees who had been abused in painful hepatitis and HIV experiments for decades in an Austrian laboratory were finally released to a sanctuary in Germany. Go to PETA.org to watch the video of the chimpanzees as they step out of their enclosures and into daylight for the first time in 30 years. Thanks to the many compassionate people who took time to speak out in behalf of these chimpanzees, they are now living together happily at an animal sanctuary where they … (14 comments)

peta: Cloris Leachman Speaks Up for Ailing Elephants - 09/17/11 10:15 AM

Anyone who suffers from arthritis knows how painful a disease it is. The pain is relentless—every move can be excruciating. Elephants used in the circus are susceptible to arthritis because of constant confinement and being forced to perform grueling tricks over and over, facing punishment if they do not comply. Acclaimed actor Cloris Leachman exposes the suffering of these arthritic elephants in a shocking video for PETA.
Karen, Nicole, and Sara—three elephants Ringling hauls from town to town chained in cramped boxcars—exhibit serious lameness and stiffness. Nicole and Karen also suffer from arthritis, and Sara, who is only 10 years … (10 comments)

MAPPAR (The Midwest Animal and Potbellied Pig Association and Rescue) Sanctuary is losing its property due to economic conditions and is in need of placing its animals while it re-organizes with a new Board so that the mission of providing sanctuary for rescued animals may continue. Since many sanctuaries have already closed in an area where there was already a shortage of animal rescues, it is imperative that the animals get placed until another multi-species animal sanctuary can be established.
