This weekend my brother was visiting from Kansas and we wanted to share the beauty of our desert with he and his girlfriend.  We all have our list of the top places to go and things to do here.  
I posted a Top 10 Things to do in Palm Springs Area list a few months ago and there is no doubt that

Think you know when Mojave Maxine, a large female tortoise that lives at The Living Desert, will emerge for spring?
Guess the right date in an online contest open to kids in kindergarten through 12th grade, and win a $50 gift certificate, a Federal Parks Lands Pass, a $100 gift certificate for the student's teacher, and a visit from a desert tortoise, plus Mojave Maxine T-shirts for the entire class.
This season she has been in her den since on Nov. 26, waiting for the warm sun and the flowers to return.

I love big CATS... and was so excited to hear about the latest addition to The Living Desert in Palm Desert, CA.  This pretty kitty needs a name... and they are having a contest to find a good one!
The Living Desert is looking for help to name its newest addition: a 2-year-old female jaguar.
The contest runs through March 21 for a new exhibit opening April 1.  "Just for Kids"... so children 12 and younger can enter. Entry forms are available at www.livingdesert.org.

If you love desert plants, animals and spending time talking to others about them, you might fit right in as a volunteer or docent at The Living Desert.
                                                                                             
 
The zoo and botanical gardens, located in Palm Desert and Indian Wells, is looking for adult and teen volunteers and docents for the upcoming 2010/2011 season.
Volunteers positions are long-term and applicants must be able to commit to at least one three- to four-hour shift per week, said Volunteer Coordinator Judi Greene.
