Residents who have been putting off remodeling projects or have one waiting in the wings have gotten a break from the city.

The Loveland City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved waiving building permit fees temporarily for renovating, repairing, remodeling or constructing an addition to owner-occupied single-family homes and duplexes.

The waiver, effective Oct. 1 and continuing to Jan. 1, 2010, is intended to boost construction projects.

According to the measure, such work still will require a permit, but no permit or plan check fees will be charged for projects valued up to $50,000.

The city’s use taxes and appropriate county taxes still will be collected, but building officials say savings could amount to $1,000 or more.

According to the city, the waivers include all owner-occupied residences, such as houses, duplexes, condos and town homes, for improvements such as basement finishes, decks, kitchen projects, porch enclosures and garages.
