delray beach: Sandoway House Nature Center in Delray Beach - 02/10/12 08:14 AM
Sandoway House Nature Center in Delray BeachThere are not many nature centers that are housed in a home that is on the National Register of Historic Places but that’s exactly what the Sandoway House Nature Center is.   The structure was built in 1936 and located just across from the Atlantic Ocean  in Delray Beach.  There are shark feedings, nature walks, educational programs, astronomy nights, summer camp and other special events.  Upstairs is a private shell collection that is the largest (10,000 museum quality shells) in Southeast Florida, a Florida Reptile room and another room devoted to historic Delray.   And to … (13 comments)

delray beach: Wordless Wednesday- South Florida Drivers- Ya Gotta Love'Em! - 01/11/12 06:43 AM

We were taking one of our morning walks at Delray Beach along A1A the other day and had to stop and take a few snapshots of these 2 South Florida drivers.  I'm not sure where the owner was... fortunately the weather was cool enough and the windows were down... but I couldn't get over these two.
My imagination ran wild and I pictured them driving down on I-95 to take advantage of the great weather we're having.  They might be planning on an early morning swim in the Atlantic or a trip over to the Lake Ida Dog Park. … (23 comments)

Ellie's Diner- Poodle Skirts, Chocolate Shakes and a Pink '57 Chevy Mark This Delray Beach Landmark.
Ellie's Diner has been serving 50's style meals for over 20 years in Delray Beach and is still going strong.  Located north of Atlantic Boulevard on Federal Highway, you'll know you're there when you see the pink '57 Chevy out front!
Everything on the menu sounds like something out of Dick Clark's American Bandstand...You can have "At the Hop" (Belgian Waffles) for breakfast.... "Johnny Angel" (Barbecue) for lunch... or "Only You" (meatloaf) for dinner.  And of course, there's the classic chocolate malt or root beer … (14 comments)

delray beach: (Not So)Speechless Sundays- My Alone Time with the MAN Upstairs - 07/24/11 06:34 AM

Weekends are usually spent with an early morning walk along Delray Beach.  Just take Atlantic Avenue and head east.   As we walk along on the sidewalk, it's fun to watch the Peloton of riders whiz by. I'm always amazed at how close to each other that they ride.  One zig the wrong way and OOPS they could all come tumbling down.
Every Saturday or Sunday morning waves of them ride along A1A, some dressed in matching shirts.  The lead always warns the group as they approach the parked cars... "Watch out for doors opening!"    Then there are the … (25 comments)

Delray Beach's July 4th Sand Sculpture Contest.. a Little Water, a Little Sand and a Lot of Creativity!
The weather held out for us and the beaches at Delray Beach were full of people out to enjoy our nation's birthday.   A favorite of everyone's is the Annual Sand Sculpture Contest, where participants began work on their creations at 8 a.m.
Each group began digging and making outlines.... and bringing in sea water to keep the sand in place.  Hard to believe that this      Turned into....

A crowd favorite was the Mt … (25 comments)

delray beach: Downtown Delray Beach- Making Art a Part of Everyday Life! - 05/15/11 06:32 AM
Downtown Delray Beach- Making Art a Part of Everyday Life!

There is even the Pineapple Grove Arts District with small cafes, boutiques, retail stores and art galleries all along Second Avenue.
I know other cities have these but I thought you'd like to see them.  See if you can guess what they are!

Getting an Idea??

And isn't that more fun to look at than this:

I love the fact that we're able to place art in the public for all to enjoy and yet have it serve a practical purpose as well.

delray beach: ActiveRainPhotobloggerContest-I Cried Every Day for 2 Weeks! - 05/06/11 06:25 AM
When I first moved to South Florida, I cried every day for 2 weeks. Looking at the photo below, you're probably shaking your head and saying... "Are you nuts?"

You see, I was in my late 30's when I first moved away from my beloved hometown of Houston, Texas.  It was where I was born; where I'd gone to school and even college and graduate school.  I honestly was so happy in Houston, I never felt the big need to move away.
Besides my family was there.... all of my friends were there... friends from school and friends I'd made through work.  Every … (45 comments)

The Beach in Delray - How to Spend a Saturday Morning!
I love Delray Beach, our Village By The Sea!  And with two miles of public beachfront there's plenty of room for visitors and residents to enjoy a morning or evening stroll.  You can take one of the many paths that wind down through sea grapes to this:

OR... there are just some times when you don't want to deal with all that sand!  There's plenty to see and do on the other side of those dunes.  On any beautiful morning, you can see 2 and 4 legged … (6 comments)

It's not too late to celebrate New Year's Eve in Delray Beach.  Celebrating its 15th year here, over 7500 people are expected to buy First Night admission buttons and around 35,000+ in attendance in the whole downtown area.
As it is throughout the country, First Night is oriented towards the family.  There will be 23 venues with different activities for both adults and children.  Activities begin at 4 where you can participate in video games, skateboarding events, and miniature golf.  There will even be a giant wall where participants can create a magnetic poem, as in refrigerator poem!
And, if your wee ones may not … (3 comments)

delray beach: Calling all Delray Beach, Florida and Tennis Fans! Need your vote!!! - 07/16/10 03:27 PM
My city of Delray Beach, Florida is one of 10 finalists in this year's "BEST TENNIS TOWN".   Candidates exemplify the true community spirit and passion for tennis.  This is not just a way to get good press for our town but the 1st place winner will receive $100,000 to go towards facility enhancements or tennis programs community wide.

What does that mean?  Well that means that in this economy where even our municipalities are financially drained, a program that serves our youth may get to continue.  It may mean that facilities that are in need of upgrades or improvements may be able … (6 comments)

delray beach: July 4th Fireworks and Festivities in Delray Beach Florida - 07/01/10 03:00 PM
Why wouldn't you want to go to the Annual July 4th Fireworks and Fesitivities held in Delray Beach, Florida where bustling Atlantic Avenue meets the beautiful Atlantic Ocean?
Delray Beach, Florida, known as the Village By the Sea definitely lives up to its name.  It is a community of 60,000 + sun loving, ocean loving people sandwiched between Boca Raton and Ft.Lauderdale  to the south and Boynton Beach and Palm Beach to the north.  The first recorded history was in 1876, with settlement beginning in 1884 with the purchase of land for farming.
With average highs around 83 degrees and lows … (14 comments)

delray beach: The 48th Annual Delray Affair in Delray Beach, Florida! - 04/11/10 09:35 PM
The 48th Annual Delray Affair in Delray Beach, Florida!  This year marks the 48th anniversary of the largest and oldest free street festival in South Florida, held in Delray Beach the first weekend after Easter.  Sponsored by the very active Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce the event relies on its hundreds of volunteers each year to man the booths, direct traffic, and other services that help to make this festival successful.

The event sprang from the Gladiola Festival, which began in 1947 when Delray was the gladiola growing capital of the world.  Participation in the event which included floats laden … (13 comments)

delray beach: Delray Beach hosts the 2009 Annual Fall Orchid Show at the American Orchid Society - 11/23/09 05:04 PM
Delray Beach Florida is so lucky to have the American Orchid Society's headquarters in our own backyard.  This 85 year "young" organization is more than a membership society.  There are beautiful grounds covering 3.5 acres and a 4000 square foot greenhouse with orchids of every imaginable color.

The AOS is there to provide orchid education and research, orchid culture assistance, organize and maintain the orchid judging system, and "ensure the preservation and perpetuation of the species."  There is a small gift shop and plenty of volunteers on hand to answer your questions.  And, if you have an orchid that is "under the … (1 comments)

delray beach: Okay, I mean it, if you're not taking advantage of the Local Business Challenge, take a look! - 08/01/09 08:32 PM
Okay, I mean it, if you're not taking advantage of the Local Business Challenge, take a look!  Hey I know it's Saturday night (and, yes, it's pretty pathetic that I'm on my laptop at 9:20 on a Saturday night!) but I just blogged about  Escentials less than 30 minutes ago and look:

Carolann doesn't have a website and already has a loyal clientele.  However, I'm hoping that this might attract nearby customers from Boca Raton and Boynton Beach, as well as tourists and people coming back for the season.
It's so easy:
*Pick a business you like or would like … (7 comments)

delray beach: Will someone "puh-leeze" get me out of the Bathroom? Or, I really need a professional photographer! - 07/13/09 11:10 AM
When you're Staging a home is it as difficult for you as it is for me to take pictures of bathrooms without seeing your reflection in the mirror?  It's especially hard when the room is small.  I'm so excited to begin my Staging Consultation that I often forget to get rid of "me" in my pictures.

Yep, that's yours truly in the mirror!
I've tried hard to maneuver myself so that I'm off to the side:

I'm the barely-there object in the doorway as reflected in the mirror.
However, it's even better if you're out of … (24 comments)
