If your house is on the market you want your home to appeal to as many Buyers as possible.... you don't want anything that will distract from their seeing your house as "their next home".  
It's not that Buyers don't like pets... in fact many buyers are or have been pet owners.  But, pets can be a distraction.  Buyers may spend so much time "oohing and ahh-ing" over your pet, they may not focus on all your house has to offer.

When I provide a Home Staging Consultation in Boca Raton, Florida, I am always asked why they need to remove and pack all of their personal items. Or why their safari-themed  family room needs to be de-themed.   I tell them to FOCUS. It's no different whether you're here in South Florida, South Jersey, or South Anywhere.  Only 10% of the Buyers are able to see past clutter, bad paint jobs, and " mis-arranged" furniture.  Are you willing to risk the sale of your house to appealing only to those 10%?
