active rain: Yeah... I've been kind of absent lately... - 03/13/11 02:02 PM
But don't worry, everything is fine.  I've been blogging on my regular site, LaneBailey.com... and sometimes on LaneBailey.info, which is more about social media.  I just haven't had much time to spend here commenting or posting special content for my A|R Blog.  I'm going to change that a bit...  I'll bring some of my content from the other sites, as well as some specific content for here...  Obviously, the points aren't my main concern anymore.
There are a lot of things going on... Social Media Breakfast Atlanta (not getting as much of my time as I think it needs), reBarCamp Atlanta, … (3 comments)

active rain: Two MileStones... - 05/09/10 03:18 PM
I haven't written "milestone posts" as often as I could... maybe not even as often as I should.  But there are two milestones that are coming together... oddly.
In the next couple of days, I will hit 700,000 points.  I have written my 1500th post on Active Rain I'm also about a month away from celebrating 3 years on Active Rain.  But I don't think that one is ripe yet. Hover, I can't really seperate the last three years, the 700,000 points and the 1500 posts.  They are gloriously intertwined.
Since joining Active Rain I have had the wonderful opportnity to … (6 comments)

active rain: Features I wish were on Active Rain... - 02/09/10 09:02 AM
There are a few features I wish Active Rain would adopt...  I love them on my WordPress blogs, and would like to see them implemented here as well.
Scheduled Posting.  This is one of my favorite features on WordPress, and it is on many other platforms as well.  When I took a vacation a couple of weeks ago, my WordPress blogs soldiered on, posts coming out as scheduled.  It would even be cooler (on WP) if I could schedule a change to the post, but that is a whole different thing.  Zemanta, Apture, PhotoDropper.  These are all different, but do similar … (85 comments)

active rain: Joomla Content Helpers... (WordPress, too) - 01/18/10 03:22 AM
As mentioned last time in WordPress and Joomla and Active Rain… oh my!, dynamic websites are the direction the web is going.  In order to live in the dynamic website world, you need to produce content.
That is the first problem.  Good, engaging content doesn't create itself.  Readers want to see pictures and video.  They want interaction.
Image via Wikipedia
Image via CrunchBase I'm AT LEAST as guilty as anyone else of not serving it up sometimes.  One one of my blogs I don't have any access to a plug-in called Zemanta, and I have to jump through hoops to use … (7 comments)

active rain: Why do you blog? - 01/13/10 12:14 PM
It seems to be a simple question...  There are obvious answers...
To bring in business To share knowledge To vent I'm sure that you have reasons...  I have mine.
The most popular answer I'm sure will be "to bring in business"... but is this really the most efficient way?  I know that almost all of the deals I am working on have come about because of blogging and social media marketing, but maybe if I spent the time I use in social media and blogging to mow grass and shovel snow I could buy TV time.  So... that isn't really it.  … (12 comments)

active rain: WordPress and Joomla and Active Rain... oh my! - 01/13/10 04:20 AM
It is obvious to everyone in the real estate business by now that the future of marketing revolves around the internet... and websites.  And the "Yester-tech" of a static website isn't going to cut it.  The days of "My broker provides me with a website at www.myname.brokerage.com" are gone.  And honestly, the days of a site coded purely in html are pretty toasted as well...  The new paradigm is what are referred to as Dynamic Websites.  Dynamic sites are exemplified by blogs, web magazines and other sites that are continually updated and interactive.
Back in "the day", a website was little … (19 comments)

active rain: Happy New Year to my AR Peeps... - 12/31/09 02:34 PM
It's funny... and fun.  I'm sitting here on the couch fielding questions from the 5 year old... he is really tired, but wants to ring in the New Year... we have 55 minutes to go.  My phone has been vibrating with text messages all evening... friends from the Rain, from outside of the Rain... family... all wishing me a Happy New Year and saying hello.
Life is good...
Over the last couple of years, I have had the opportunity... the wonderful opportunity... to meet with scores of my friends from here on Active Rain, as well as others from the … (8 comments)

active rain: Lane's 10 Best Posts for 2009... - 12/30/09 01:02 PM
'tis the season for 10 Best Posts.  They are everywhere.  Here two...  Maybe I could even do a "10 Best of the 10 Bests" post...  (that might be going too far)
I think these are my 10 Best Favorite Posts for 2009...
From LaneBailey.com
Think you have time to mull over that house buying decision for weeks? Cheap Sex and Real Estate... My home is worth what? Can a $29,000 Home be overpriced? Where in the World is Lilburn, GA? And from ActiveRain/GwinnettGarageGuy.com

active rain: Why Does This SHIFT Keep Happening To Me? - 12/28/09 03:52 PM
I read the The Millionaire Real Estate Agent and The Millionaire Real Estate Investor...  In fact, MREA was the first book I read about real estate after getting my license.
As soon as SHIFT came out, I was immediately interested in reading it as well.  And it was as I expected...  However, there is one thing I disagree with, and that is "Mastering the Market of the Moment"...  I understand it, and would certainly not argue its validity to build business, but I don't see it as a balance.
Markets ABSOLUTELY are going to shift.  The specialties that work today might … (9 comments)

active rain: Mini-Bar Camp... - 12/10/09 01:40 PM

What do you get when you take 9 real estate pros in 4 states, Skype, DimDim and a blustery Thursday?
Mini-Bar Camp...
Half BarCamp, half accountibility group and half implementation assistance hotline, we "met" for almost 7 hours of hardcore tech and sales talk.  Four of us were in the Atlanta area, so we all got together in a reasonably central location during the camp.  The other agents, in North Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama all called in.
Each person "presented" at some point during the day and we had some wide-open discussion periods as well.  While we had planned on … (16 comments)

active rain: Posterous Test... Completed... - 11/29/09 03:04 PM
I wrote a couple of posts about Posterous in the last week or so...
Get Posterous-ized... The Great Posterous Experiment... If you aren't familiar with Posterous, they might be a good place to start.
As mentioned in "The Great Posterous Experiment", I devoted the weekend to using Posterous while on a road trip.  Honestly, As a mobile platform to spit out some short posts, It ROCKS!  The limitations are with my phone.  I already know a couple of ways to sneak around those, too...
If you look at my Posterous blog, you will see that I made a BUNCH of posts … (4 comments)

active rain: Get Posterous-ized... - 11/25/09 01:09 PM
Let's get the first part out of the way...  It is pronounced pa-stir-us... like in preposterous... which would be "life before Posterous."
Posterous is a blogging site...  and if you are playing in social media, you really need to get onto it if you aren't already.  In fact, I will be including it in the future when I talk about the places that agents MUST have a presence.  It is THAT important...
It isn't because of the audience, nor is it because of the name.  It is because of the integration capability.  It is one of the coolest options for syndicating … (13 comments)

active rain: 'Cuz Brad and Bobby SAID SO... - 11/20/09 11:41 AM
A while back, Brad and/or Bobby Carroll made a VERY valid point about online identity... specifically, having a cohesive design theme throughout your sites.
I've crunched this over for a few months... looking at a few options... and finally started down the path of making several of my sites more complimentary in their design.  Now I haven't built myself to the Mike Mueller level of FaceBook Fan Page design, nor the Dakno level of Posterous themeology, but my blog and my site are now almost seamless in their themes.
Posterous is presenting a little more of a problem for me.  I … (8 comments)

active rain: And Now For Something Completely Different... and Flat - 11/12/09 06:40 AM
Do you know who “ Flat Stanley” is?  Ours is actually a “Flat Garrett“, but the idea is the same…
He is traveling the world, in an envelope.  We set up a website at FlatGarrett.info to chronicle the visits Flat Garrett makes between now and Spring Break.
Right now, Flat Garrett is hanging out with Bob near Ann Arbor, Michigan.  He will soon be heading back to Seattle, Washington, where Flat Garrett may get to hit a Sonics game and go up in the Space Needle.  In mid-February, he will be visiting Lisa in New Orleans for a ride on a Mardi … (10 comments)

active rain: Lane's Active Rain Ambassador Series - Part V... Some Random Musings... - 10/21/09 06:17 AM
No, the series isn't wrapping up...  But there are a few things that I have wanted to say that were too short for their own post, but didn't fit neatly in other posts...
Community...
Active Rain is a social network, at least as much as FaceBook, and certainly more that Twitter (for most users).  What I mean by this is that there are amny things happening here, just like a community.  There are groups of people with similar interests, just like a community.  And there are lots of opportunities to get together and meet others... just like a community.
The … (5 comments)

active rain: Lane's Active Rain Ambassador Series - Part IV... Beyond the Blog - 10/19/09 03:43 PM
You've set up your Active Rain account (hopefully you are a RainMaker).  You have tuned your profile to be cooler than than 803.6% of the other ones here.  You have lurked and learned around the network.  And then you wrote (and hopefully published) a few blog posts.
What more could there possibly be?
There are a load of other things to do, and like building a hot rod, it is work that is never done.  There are always new tools and new subjects.  But we have the big things well under way.  Now it is time to get your blog … (4 comments)

active rain: Lane's Active Rain Ambassador Series - Part III... Ready to Blog, Now what? - 10/18/09 04:25 PM
OK, so you've joined Active Rain, tweaked your profile (Part I), started to do a little lurking (Part II)... now you are ready to hit the ground and run.
Step 1...
Let go of perfection.  Many of us want every post to be perfect.  Let go...  It isn't going to happen.  The ONLY thing that you will get from trying to make all of your posts perfect is a lack of posts.
Make it good... Use tools like spell check... If you are concerned, have someone else read it first... Remember that even after you post it, you CAN edit.  I … (9 comments)

active rain: Lane's Active Rain Ambassador Series - Part II... Where to Start? - 10/17/09 05:28 PM
For someone diving into Active Rain to really get the most out of it, it can be a pretty daunting task.  There are more than 162,000 members and there are literally thousands of blogs posted every day.  There are industry leaders, incredible performers and hugely interesting people posting up information all of the time.
NOBODY can keep up with everything on Active Rain.  At least not is they plan on sleeping or working or remembering our families.
So, we need a shallow end... somewhere to dip in a toe...
While I think that having a blog is something that every good … (7 comments)

active rain: Lane's Active Rain Ambassador Series - Part I... Your Profile - 10/16/09 04:55 AM
One of the very first things a new member to Active Rain should do is "tune their profile".  In order to wring the most performance out of it, we have to make sure it is optimized...
Here are a few things we are optimizing for:
Keyword rich, location and niche specific content (for Search Engine Optimization... SEO) Reader friendly layout (pictures... tagged of course, for SEO) Rich media presentation (more tagged pictures as well as video... excellent for SEO) Testimonials.  Consumers LOVE testimonials... especially video testimonials Links to other sites... passing some "link love" You will notice that a lot of … (42 comments)

active rain: rebarcamp... No? Yes? What is it going to be? - 10/05/09 02:48 PM
It was a lock... I was going to the Lynchburg rebarcamp later this week.  All of the arrangements had been made, clearances had been obtained from the local authorities (that would be my wife and kids).  I was going to ride up with another local agent and then get dropped off in Gatlinburg for a weekend with the family...
But then...  everything kind of ... happened.  Tough deals I am working on that were supposed to close last week, tough deals for the other agents that were going to share the costs...  Stuff.
I had been thinking of the Raleigh rebarcamp.  … (14 comments)
