green awareness: Buy a Toilet, Get back some Cash! - 06/06/10 11:41 PM
Right now there are several areas of North Georgia, including Gwinnett County, that are issuing rebates for 'water saver' toilets. While this might not be terribly exciting, it is pretty cool... especially when combined with a deal at Costco on one of the listed toilets... Image via Wikipedia The Duluth Costco has a dual flush (4L/6L) model available for $99.65, including tax. It is eligible for a $100 rebate. It isn't listed as being available on Coscto.com, but the store had 25+ toilets a couple of days ago. I do not know if they will be restocked, or when. There are

green awareness: Sustaining Urban Villages – Brockett Elementary Outdoor Classroom - 01/09/10 01:40 PM
Mrs. GarageGuy and I had the opportunity earlier this week to visit with Brendon Barclay, Executive Director of Sustaining Urban Villages. Along with a score of other adults and kids (mostly homeschoolers…), we had volunteered our morning to help with the construction of an outdoor classroom. The purpose of the outdoor classroom is multi-fold. In addition to learning about the biology of the forest, it is the perfect setting to learn about the interconnectedness of the environment… and it is even a pleasant place to study math or reading. Previously, during a national 4-H Club event in Atlanta, 50 4-H

green awareness: Permeable Pavers... WikiHow - 08/02/09 11:43 PM
Image via Wikipedia There is a simple way to increase the health of your yard... Allow water to get to the soil in the right amount. The magic word is permeability. Permeability is the measure of how much water can permeate (soak through) the material. Many auto enthusiasts have second garages on their property. One of the issues with second garages, as well as the accompanying driveway, is the ratio of permeable to impermeable surfaces. Aside from the house and garage (they better be impermeable!), most driveways and sidewalks are impermeable... and we can change that. Many counties, including Gwinnett County,

green awareness: (pre-) Earth Day Round-up from Gwinnett County, GA - 04/18/09 10:56 PM
There was a LOT going on in Gwinnett County, GA this weekend in celebration of the upcoming Earth Day. Two of the coolest events were the Grand Opening of the Recycling Bank of Gwinnett in Duluth and the Earth Day Celebration at the Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center in Buford. After T-ball in the morning, we headed up to the Recycling Bank of Gwinnett to see what was going on with the Grand Opening. They had tours and displays and fun stuff for the kids. I know... it doesn't sound like the most glamorous event, but it was a lot of

green awareness: How well are my predictions doing? - 04/17/09 11:02 AM
While wandering through some old posts I ran across one of my prediction posts. Lane's Top Ten Underdogs for 2009 It was interesting to look over. And I thought it might be fun to take a look at how I am doing on it so far... 10. GM still needs a cheerleader... and maybe a good bankruptcy judge. Despite them putting a couple of brands high up in the JD Power quality rankings... including Buick at the TOP, they are seen as junky compared to some foreign nameplates. I think they are going to end up the year in bankruptcy. 9.

green awareness: Smart people can still have stupid ideas... - 01/27/09 09:35 PM
And it IS bold to call it stupid. I know that in less than 5 minutes, I will have angered more than one person... But it needs to be said. In a nutshell, the Obama Administration, and Obama himself are pushing to allow 18 different states to have their own fuel efficiency standards and emissions standards. While we could have a long argument about emissions standards, global warming and carbon, this has NOTHING to do with that. The reason this is a STUPID IDEA is because it will allow 18 states to have 18 DIFFERENT emissions standards and 18 different

green awareness: Weather or Climate? Stirrin' the puddin' - 12/18/08 09:37 PM
On a forum I used to participate on, there was a VERY active discussion of global warming. It was actually QUITE enlightening, and the main combatants on both sides were quite well armed. And they had managed to fight to a draw... But there was this one little thing that I used to get a little kick out of, and that was the classification of weather v. climate. You see, the advocates had a habit of calling anything that DIDN'T agree with their position "weather" and only calling it climate if they thought it bolstered their position. The first thing to

green awareness: Oh Garbage!... - 11/15/08 03:17 PM
Look for changes in unincorporated Gwinnett County beginning January 1st... at least for your garbage and recyclables. Gwinnett County has been looking at their waste management plan. Details were supposed to be made public in December, but the Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful website is showing that the plan is done. A few highlights of the plan are as follows: For the first six months it will cost $20.45/mo. paid directly to the vendor. For the remainder of 2009, it will cost $17.86/mo. paid to the county as a line item on property taxes. The price is fixed until 12/31/2010, and the

green awareness: Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center in Buford, GA - 08/02/08 04:17 PM
Freshly posted on LaneBailey.com... Complete with 20 photographs and an interactive panorama... The Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center opened not too long ago. And it is quietly a pretty cool place. Here are a couple of highpoints from the post: The first LEED Gold Certified Green Building in Gwinnett County. The largest sloped vegetative roof in the US. A very cool interactive "Water Room" for kids... even big kids. Pervious pavement system to reduce stormwater runoff. 11 different trails ranging up to 2.4 miles, and from easy to strenuous. Facility rental for events. This is a pretty cool place, offering multiple

green awareness: More Earth Day fun... ;^D - 04/22/08 02:21 PM
Since it is Earth Day, I needed to toss on an orange shirt and be as "not Green" as I could.. just for fun... Let's move on to oil, oil reserves and drilling. I already did one on Anthropomorphic Global Warming... Here are a few fun facts that we can watch get spun today. The largest importer of oil to the US is Canada. The are reputed to have 179.2B barrels of provable reserves. At their current rate, those reserves will hold out 182 years. Oddly, the same source says that 95% are in oil sand... but they don't

green awareness: It's Earth Day... ;^D - 04/22/08 10:57 AM
And I can't let it go unnoticed. All day long, we are going to be bombarded by rampant environmentalism and the dangers of Anthropomorphic Global Warming (AGW). I just wanted to toss a little reality back into the discussion... just so that there would be balance. "Nobody is interested in solutions if they don't think there's a problem. Given that starting point, I believe it is appropriate to have an over-representation of factual presentations on how dangerous (global warming) is, as a predicate for opening up the audience to listen to what the solutions are..." former Vice President Al Gore(now, chairman

green awareness: Driving on french fry oil? - 04/12/08 01:28 PM
Bill Roberts posted a comment on a blog of another subject and mentioned bio-diesel. He thought I might have an opinion... and that I might have done a little research... How did he ever guess? Honestly, if I had the room I would be brewing it up in the garage right now (see, this is another reason for a big garage... I could save money and resources). Now, if you aren't following yet, let me do a little catching up for you. When Rudolf Diesel invented the Diesel engine, he designed it to run on peanut oil and other vegetable based

green awareness: Rudolf's Peanut Oil Miracle - 03/29/08 12:01 AM
I was reading a couple of posts earlier this evening, here and elsewhere, and there was a common thread of efficiency and environmental friendliness... ok, one of them was tongue in cheek about how long it would take to pay back the purchase of a hybrid. Well, I would like to toss in my nickel. And offer up an option that seems to be completely lost on many people... diesel. Of course, looking at the price, the first thought is that that would not be such a great idea. As I write, I see $3.89 for a gallon of diesel, and

green awareness: Green may start to make people see red... - 03/04/08 06:18 PM
Right now there is a wave of "greeness" sweeping the world. Everyone wants to be green... We want to out-green the Jones so to speak. But, is there a downside to this greening? Unfortunately, there is. Actually, there are several. I may have to write several posts to debunk a variety of green myths... but I'll start with bio-fuel... specifically corn ethanol. Before we get started, there is one thing I want to make VERY clear. I am not against environmental responsibility. In fact, unlike many "greens", I spend my time out in the wilds. I love being able to
