lilburn: Wayback Wednesday... Car Show THIS Weekend... - 05/04/11 05:33 PM
Image by lane.bailey via Flickr Kind of odd that for a "Wayback" post I would talk about an upcoming car show...  But the show happens around the first Saturday in May each year... and so THIS Saturday is the day.
Smokerise Baptist Church is having their 11th Annual Smokerise Car Show on Saturday from 9am until 3pm.  Registration runs from 9am until Noon... so there might be a few cars that don't show up until late.  Judging runs from Noon until 3pm.
And check out this link for pictures from last year's show.  There were some pretty cool rides on hand... … (2 comments)

lilburn: Photo Friday... This Little Piggy Went to Market - 02/11/11 01:00 PM
Looking over the wares Last summer, Lilburn, GA, began a weekly Farmer's Market every Friday from 4-8pm.  Booths were set up on Railroad Ave., next the the Police Station and City Park.  We made it out a few times with the kids to pick up some fresh treats... and see some neighbors.  One of the things that makes Lilburn seem like a small town is that we run into our childrens' schoolmates, fellow Cub Scout Parents, our neighbors and other folks we know in the community... seemingly everywhere.
It looks like the Lilburn Farmer's Market will be back again this year.  … (2 comments)

lilburn: Terra Sol by Pulte near Lilburn - 02/07/11 12:57 PM
A few years ago this property was started. One home was built, along with the future clubhouse. The tennis courts were installed and the swimming pool was roughed in. Some of the streets had been laid, and many of the homesites had been prepped.
And that is how the property had sat for the last several years. It just wasn't worth building out during the worst of the real estate meltdown.
Apparently that has changed now... Pulte has begun construction on the project again. The actually tore down the house that had been built onsite, cleaned up the entrance and begun … (0 comments)

lilburn: Photo Friday... Where in the World? - 02/04/11 02:33 PM
Who would have thought that the largest Hindu Temple outside of India would be in Lilburn, GA?  I live here and love this area, but I was surprised to find out that little tidbit.
When it was under construction, many of us were wondering what was going into the spot at the corner of Lawrenceville Hwy and Rockbridge Rd.  There was a giant gantry crane and more concrete that one could almost imagine.
Before the temple was complete, hundreds of volunteers spent thousands of hours making everything perfect.  As we toured it, we could see thousands of figures carved into the … (6 comments)

lilburn: Smile... - 01/28/11 05:40 AM
Image via Wikipedia You're on Candid Camera...
Remember that show?
The City of Lilburn recently announced that they were going to be installing a video surveillance system along the City's Greenway Trail.  There are already 14 cameras that Lilburn, GA Police use to keep an eye on City Park (the tennis courts, playground and walking loop).  Iron Sky will be installing 19 new cameras along the Greenway Trails running out of City Park.
And if you haven't been on the Greenway Trails, you really should.  They provide some really great recreational opportunities.

lilburn: Photo Friday... Hiking in the Sky - 01/07/11 02:07 PM
Testing his fear of heights... This is the new thing.  Each Friday, I will feature a photo.  Many will be local.  Some may be real estate related.  Others will be definately not local, and might not be related to real estate.  Cars, people, vacation, homes, garages, tools... fun times.  Just about anything might make the cut.
Since Flashback Friday and Wayback Wednesday have been highlighting posts from 1 and 2 years ago, I have covered posts for the last several years.  Wayback Wednesday will continue, and will feature posts from either one or two years ago that week.

lilburn: Flashback Friday... Where in the World is Lilburn? - 12/10/10 03:58 AM
Last year I wrote a nice little post about Lilburn...  This is a really nice place to live, and I thought it might be fun to dive into the history of the town.  It certainly is interesting, as are the histories of many of the localities around Gwinnett County, GA.
I'll let you read the post to find out that history, but I wanted to add a little bit to it...
My wife and I have made this area of Gwinnett County, GA,  our home for the last nine years... and she lived nearby, in Tucker, prior to that.  We decided … (8 comments)

lilburn: Interesting Homes Around Lilburn GA - 12/07/10 07:41 AM
Image via Wikipedia Lilburn, GA, is a great place to live.  There are some great schools, and the community is both close knit and welcoming.
Parkview High School is one of the highest rated schools in Georgia... and it has been for decades.  The feeder schools, like Trickum Middle School and Arcado Elementary School, also have great reputations.
It is also very convenient to both downtown Atlanta and shopping areas like the Mall of Georgia and Discover Mills.  While it isn't exactly a short drive to Cobb County (Marietta, Kennesaw, etc.), it is very close to Suwanee and Duluth, which have … (0 comments)

lilburn: There is a new City Hall coming to Lilburn, GA... - 10/30/10 05:46 AM
It will take two to three years, but Lilburn is slated to get a new City Hall.  There will also be a new Library, and the current City Hall will go to the Police Department... the chambers where the Council meetings are held will be a new courtroom in the Police Department.
The best part is that Gwinnett County is picking up part of the cost, with much of the rest being paid for by SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax).  According to city officials, maintenance costs will drop after the adoption of the new City Hall.
The new City … (2 comments)

lilburn: Big League Dreams another step closer to Lilburn... - 10/28/10 03:50 PM
Image via Wikipedia Over on my LilburnDwellings blog a few weeks ago I wrote about Big League Dreams possibly coming to Lilburn, GA.  At that time, the city was thinking about spending $450,000 (refundable, according to the City) for a feasibility study from Big League Dreams regarding building a facility here in Lilburn.
Last week, the City approved the feasibility study based on a market study conducted by BLD.  According to the market study, Gwinnett is ripe for their type of facility.  However, there seem to be some problems that I see in the study... running counter to the goals of … (4 comments)

lilburn: Lilburn, GA Market Report, August 2010 - 09/28/10 04:55 PM

Lilburn is in Gwinnett County, GA, just outside of Atlanta.  As of the 2000 Census, there were 11,307 people in Lilburn, but that is only including people in the city limits, and there has been a lot of growth since 2000 in Gwinnett County.  It was incorporated in 1910.  Lilburn is home to Parkview High School, and also has students that the Brookwood, Berkmar and Meadowcreek clusters. lilburn: Big League Dreams in Lilburn? - 09/09/10 03:24 PM
Image via Wikipedia The City of Lilburn is mulling over a plan to bring a ‘Big League Dreams‘ sports complex to the city.  It would be located near US29 and Indian Trail-Lilburn Rd.
The plan is not without controversy, and the company is not without its detractors.  And it isn’t cheap…  the cost is expected to be $20M+ and the company has a history of going well over their initial estimates by the time construction completes.  And that won’t likely be for 2+ years…
The Gwinnett Daily Post had an article the other day about it, and mentioned that there will … (7 comments)

lilburn: Flashback… Rumble, Rumble… - 08/22/10 04:34 PM

Image via Wikipedia Last year I was in the midst of writing about some of the local businesses I try to frequent.  One of those was Millennium Cycle Works.  I dropped in one day (without my 4′ co-pilot) and talked for a minute with Ken, the owner.  After a moment to gather his thoughts, I shot a video of him talking about his business.  He is a great guy with a cool cycle dealership.
My wife still won’t let me talk her into me getting a bike… but I still have managed to get up there for a few things … (2 comments)

lilburn: This is what I feared… Gwinnett Market Report – July, 2010 - 08/22/10 03:57 PM

Image by lane.bailey via Flickr I have been kind of expecting this, but of course it will take a couple of months to confirm…
The Tax Credit did not kick the Gwinnett Market into gear…
Instead, its expiration killed sales.  Looking over the last few months of sales we see that for 2010, sales were (compared to 2009):
January – down 10.9% February – up 1.7% March – up 10.1% April – up 14.1% May – up 17.3% June – down 0.8% July – down 26.2% As we look over these numbers, there are a few things to keep in … (1 comments)

Image via Wikipedia Arcado Elementary School will be hosting a 'Round-up' on Thursday, August 12th, for boys interested in joining Cub Scouts.  The event will run from 6:30pm until 7:30pm.
Cub Scouting is a program for boys between 1st and 5th grade.  Pack 551, the Arcado Elementary School Pack, has wonderful opportunities for boys to learn, socialize and gain experiences that they might otherwise not be able to have.
From the Boy Scouts of America website:
Activities are used to achieve the aims of Scouting—citizenship training, character development, and personal fitness. Many of the activities happen right in the den and … (4 comments)

lilburn: Welcome Arcado's new Principal, Penny Palmer-Young - 08/07/10 04:52 AM
Image by lane.bailey via Flickr For the last few years, Arcado Elementary School has had Joe Ahrens in the top post.  He has positioned Arcado Elementary School as one of the highest ranked in Gwinnett County.  Excellent school spirit, very high test scores and a sense of community have all been fostered under his leadership.
This year, Arcado will have a new top administrator, Penny Palmer-Young.  She is committed to continuing the performance excellence of the school.
She was born and raised here in Gwinnett County, and graduated from Brookwood High School (she can be forgiven...  ;^ ).  Ms. Young has … (0 comments)
