technology: Twitter Thursday with the Founding Fathers... - 12/16/10 01:38 PM

I guess we could call this Twitter Thursday...
I think that a lot of times we forget that the "Founding Fathers" were real people.  they were also hanging out on the edge of technology for their time.
Thomas Jefferson could have REALLY used a Kindle.  The guy was a reading machine.  Not to mention that he was a genius...
George Washington was a gifted leader and he wasn't afraid to employ battlefield technology as he found it.  He recognized that the training that his soldiers could get from Baron von Steuben was beyond what he could provide... and the battle … (2 comments)

technology: Disruption... Tables Turned - 12/13/10 03:27 PM
Image via Wikipedia I was at a real estate conference last week, and one of the things the presenter said REALLY struck a chord with me.
Ten years ago, WE used to tell our clients which houses we were going to look at that day.  Now, THEY come in and tell us which houses we are going to see.
Obviously, this is a giant change in the way real estate agents do business.  Since my entry into the real estate business, it has always been the way I've done business.
In the "Old School" world of real estate, agents were the … (11 comments)

technology: Enter Realtor.com... New Android App - 11/08/10 02:22 PM
Realtor.com has introduced their new Android App for Google Andriod based mobile phones like the T-Mobile G2, Sprint EVO, Verizon Droid X and AT&T Captivate.
I have to say, it is pretty cool.  It is 'location aware', so it can search for listings and open houses that are nearby.  It can also do a host of other things, such as filtering listings by price, amenities, size, bedrooms/bathrooms, etc.  It can also share listings with family and friends... and it syncs to your Realtor.com account so that you can share listings and notes between your computer and phone.
Scan this with your … (10 comments)

technology: Windows Live Gallery... - 10/25/10 05:06 PM
My Windows Live Gallery (and a few other Windows Live components) upgraded a couple of days ago.
Wow...
I mean it has become REALLY cool to use this tool.  When I got the new laptop, it had Windows 7 installed.  One of the tools was the windows Live Gallery, and I spent a lot of time tagging people and adding descriptive tags for locations.  It was nice to be able to pull out images based on tags.
But it really changed with the new update...
Now I can combine tags for searches.  My wife is putting together a coffee table book … (7 comments)

technology: Flashback Friday... Catch the Wave? - 10/22/10 03:13 AM
Image via Wikipedia Last year everyone was talking about the Google Wave... it was the hottest 'beta' invite around.  There were hundreds of blog posts from all sorts of tech luminaries about the Google Wave and how it was going to revolutionize communications... rich media, text, video, audio, websites... all together.
About two and a half months ago, Google announced that the Wave was going to die... probably after the end of 2010.
I wrangled a Wave invite last year.  It was cool... but not cool enough to actually use.  And I guess that was why nobody bothered to really use … (10 comments)

technology: Getting Things Done... - 10/20/10 09:33 AM
Image via CrunchBase A list can be a wonderful tool to help get things done.  It is a wonderful focus point to push our activities in the right direction.  But one problem with task lists is keeping them current across various platforms.
The obvious choices are:
Outlook Google Thunderbird w/Lightning (Mozilla) Phone based applications I'm sure that Apple has a suite with an integrated calendar and task list, too... but I'm not a Mac user, so I don't know about their options.
Image via Wikipedia I recently changed from a BlackBerry Pearl Flip to an Android T-Mobile G2 (affiliate link) … (8 comments)

technology: Before Tactics or Strategy, there is... - 10/12/10 10:13 AM
Image via Wikipedia I hear a lot about Social Media Strategy or Technology Tactics... but there is something that seems to be missing from many of these conversations.  Rather than framing the discussion in terms of the end result, it gets formed around how to use a tool.
First we need a GOAL...
The goal is the missing ingredient.  In fact, not only is it the missing ingredient, but it is the most important part.  Since I am a car guy, let me illustrate it like this...
The goal is to win races.  We decide that we want to win a … (3 comments)

technology: So, Are You In? #rebcAtlanta - 09/25/10 05:06 PM
It is coming FAST.  On Friday, October 1st, Atlanta will host its first ever real estate barcamp.  It has been a long time coming, too.
The first rebarcamp was in San Francisco in July, 2008.  It was the day before Inman, and I think I got more information that I could use that day than the next two combined.  Since then I have been to a couple more rebc events, like Charlotte and Raleigh.  Each time, I have come away just amazed at the level of information that I took in.  The networking has also been extraordinary.  Great friendships have been … (3 comments)

technology: rebarcamp Atlanta... A Date and A Venue... - 06/17/10 06:09 AM
and a FaceBook Page... and a Twitter Hashtag...
That's right, yesterday on the FaceBook Page for rebcAtlanta, we announced the date and location for the first ever rebarcamp Atlanta.
Friday, October 1st, 2010
CoolRay Field, Home of the Gwinnett Braves
#rebcatl
At the moment, we are putting together the team that will put on the event.  The search for sponsors is underway.  In the next few days we will roll out registration.  It is a busy and exciting time for those of us that have learned so much from rebarcamps and want to extend the reach of the experience.
So, you … (6 comments)

technology: Small Business BarCamp Atlanta - 06/16/10 03:28 AM
Image via Wikipedia I am proud to say that I attended the very first REbarcamp, which was a real estate industry specific technology “unconference”.  Basically, the idea behind barcamp is that the conferees get together and create an agenda and then host the sessions.  It is an amazing peer-to-peer discussion.
Ken Cook, of Social Media Edge on BlogTalkRadio, had the vision to build a barcamp experience optimized for small business owners.  Many small businesses have found that ‘New Media’ has presented a very cool opportunity to promote… without spending loads of money.  In fact, many smaller businesses have found that they … (4 comments)

technology: A little more about an Atlanta rebarcamp - 04/22/10 05:17 PM
I still haven't kicked this idea.
But that doesn't mean it is a certainty, yet.  There are a lot of details to be worked out, such as venue, if there will be a cost and the exact date.  Of course, there also needs to be a team to make it happen.
But before we put together a team and start scouting venues and getting all of the details in place, there are about 3,572 questions.  Here are the first 8...

technology: Should Atlanta have a reBarCamp? - 04/20/10 02:44 PM
The Atlanta market is the home to REtechSouth, the premiere real estate technology conference in the Southeast.  It draws some of the best experts in Technology and Social Networking for real estate in the country.  I'm not going to even try to name all of the incredible speakers that come to RETSO, because I would miss a favorite...
Several hundred real estate professionals came from all over the Southeast... and beyond... to learn the latest in tech and touch.  It was two amazing days of learning and networking.  I have been to all three RETSO events, and hope to make it … (6 comments)

technology: A New Video Resource... Video Connector - 04/04/10 02:26 PM
I recently subscribed to the Video Connector.  It is a cool new service from MY video provider. Tara Jones and TJ Hedges, the folks behind the Video Connector, are friends of mine.  they are also the folks I turn to in order to provide video for my listings.
Reel Productions has grown to be one of the best real estate video companies in the country.  They have travelled coast to coast for big national brokerages.  They have had agents fly them all over and charter helicopters for them to do property or neighborhood profiles.  They have presented at major conferances ranging … (0 comments)

technology: Just a little GreaseMonkey... - 03/28/10 04:44 PM
I am a FireFox user.  I prefer it over Internet Explorer for a lot of reasons.  It has WAY more flexibility.  And one of our MLSs is even going to be supporting it soon.
I had installed one particular plug-in a long time ago, and was left wondering why.  In fact, when I set up the new computer, I didn't install that particular plug-in.  But while at REtechSouth (#retso), I attended a session of FireFox, and it was mentioned as a 'must-have' add-on.
It is back.  And it is back with a companion.
GreaseMonkey is an add-on that allows little 'scripts' … (8 comments)

technology: Want to have Breakfast? - 03/18/10 03:03 PM
Social Media Breakfast - Atlanta has been plugging along since July, 2009.  We have met every month since then, except for December... in locations around Atlanta.  We have discussed topics ranging from Twitter to FaceBook Fan Pages, Posterous and Tumblr to Gist and gool ol' fashioned email.
And we are still at it...  The technology keeps evolving and sites keep popping up and disappearing...
The next Social Media Breakfast - Atlanta (#smbATL) event will be on Wednesday, March 24th, 2010 from 8:00 to 10:00am.
If you are coming into town for REtechSouth (discounted tickets, affiliate link), and will be in … (1 comments)

technology: RETSO? Less than Two Weeks... - 03/14/10 02:54 PM
It just struck me this evening that RETSO (REtechSouth) is less than two weeks away.  In fact... 11 days.
Just a couple of days ago I saw a message on FaceBook mentioning that the MVP tickets were sold out.  These are the cool tickets that will get the holder into the Speaker's Dinner and a bunch of other cool stuff...
But I still have the standard tickets available at 10% off...  That would be $161.10 (+$4.03 for the service fee).  These are good for all of the sessions... and there are a LOT of really cool learning opportunities.
And this year... … (1 comments)

technology: New Toy... I mean Tool... - 03/06/10 12:55 AM
My Tablet PC is on the ropes... and as much as I wanted to get another, I couldn't... I got a "normal" laptop...  It is still pretty cool.
I got another Toshiba, the last one was mostly trouble free for the last 5years, I can't really complain.  I did consider a few other machines...
HP TouchSmart TM2.  This is a convertible Tablet PC, like my old one, except smaller.  While it was my first choice, it was also around $1000... and so I opted for being able to return home...  Toshiba Satellite T135D-S1325RD.  This borders on the Ultra-Portable range.  It is … (13 comments)

technology: Foray into Geekdom... COOL! - 02/21/10 01:25 PM
Ok, who knows what an "unboxing" is?
For those that so, you are a a geek.  I am too.
For those that don't, it is generally an EXTREMELY dry video where a reviewer opens the box of a groovy new product and introduces the viewer to all of the cool stuff inside.  Usually there is a monotone voice over that makes Golf announcers seem exciting. The reviewer pulls out each and every piece and describes it's function...
"This is the AC wall adapter.  It charges the battery and can run the laptop from AC power."  Really?  Whoda thunkit?

technology: NASCAR and Bobsledding - 02/20/10 01:19 PM
In 1992, Geoff Bodine was a stock car racing good ol' boy (albeit, one from New York).  He was knee deep in being one of the best NASCAR drivers of all time.  In fact, he hold a Guiness Record for the most wins by a racer in one season... 55 Modified wins.
But something else happened in 1992...  Bodine was watching the Winter Olympics and saw something he didn't like.  The American Bobsledding teams were struggling.  Their equipment was all imported from Europe and they were having a hard time with it.
In bobsledding, the technology is VERY important.  suspension, aerodynamics, … (6 comments)

technology: Are you Buzzed? - 02/16/10 01:17 PM
Image by Máximo Gómez Santos via Flickr If you haven't been in Gmail lately, you might not have noticed Google's new toy tool.  It is called Google Buzz.  In a nutshell, Google is integrating a social media component into Gmail.
In Buzz, users can strike up public or private conversations with integrated video, photos and links.  Kind of like the Status Updates on FaceBook.  In that regard, it is a step above Twitter... the king of the micro-blog/status update world.  Twitter doesn't allow inline photos and videos, so when users share them, viewers have to leave Twitter to view the associated … (8 comments)
