things to do: Wayback Wednesday... Car Show THIS Weekend... - 05/04/11 05:33 PM
Image by lane.bailey via Flickr Kind of odd that for a "Wayback" post I would talk about an upcoming car show...  But the show happens around the first Saturday in May each year... and so THIS Saturday is the day.
Smokerise Baptist Church is having their 11th Annual Smokerise Car Show on Saturday from 9am until 3pm.  Registration runs from 9am until Noon... so there might be a few cars that don't show up until late.  Judging runs from Noon until 3pm.
And check out this link for pictures from last year's show.  There were some pretty cool rides on hand... … (2 comments)

things to do: Photo Friday... This Little Piggy Went to Market - 02/11/11 01:00 PM
Looking over the wares Last summer, Lilburn, GA, began a weekly Farmer's Market every Friday from 4-8pm.  Booths were set up on Railroad Ave., next the the Police Station and City Park.  We made it out a few times with the kids to pick up some fresh treats... and see some neighbors.  One of the things that makes Lilburn seem like a small town is that we run into our childrens' schoolmates, fellow Cub Scout Parents, our neighbors and other folks we know in the community... seemingly everywhere.
It looks like the Lilburn Farmer's Market will be back again this year.  … (2 comments)

things to do: Photo Friday... Where in the World? - 02/04/11 02:33 PM
Who would have thought that the largest Hindu Temple outside of India would be in Lilburn, GA?  I live here and love this area, but I was surprised to find out that little tidbit.
When it was under construction, many of us were wondering what was going into the spot at the corner of Lawrenceville Hwy and Rockbridge Rd.  There was a giant gantry crane and more concrete that one could almost imagine.
Before the temple was complete, hundreds of volunteers spent thousands of hours making everything perfect.  As we toured it, we could see thousands of figures carved into the … (6 comments)

things to do: Photo Friday... Say Cheese... - 01/21/11 03:09 PM
What can be more fun than an Airshow?  And Dobbins Air Reserve Base has been holding one for years (missing a couple of years... but not many).  And the stars of the show are the Blue Angels.
The 2010 was on 16th July.  It was a great time, with the Blue Angels, Canadian Snowbirds and several other aerobatic groups and individuals.  There were also a LOT of display aircraft onsite, including this C-5a Galaxy.
As the show was winding down (actually over, but the bus lines were WAY crowded), we were walking around and managed to catch the nose being lowered.  … (5 comments)

things to do: Photo Friday... Hiking in the Sky - 01/07/11 02:07 PM
Testing his fear of heights... This is the new thing.  Each Friday, I will feature a photo.  Many will be local.  Some may be real estate related.  Others will be definately not local, and might not be related to real estate.  Cars, people, vacation, homes, garages, tools... fun times.  Just about anything might make the cut.
Since Flashback Friday and Wayback Wednesday have been highlighting posts from 1 and 2 years ago, I have covered posts for the last several years.  Wayback Wednesday will continue, and will feature posts from either one or two years ago that week.

things to do: Achieve... - 12/25/10 02:13 PM
Image via Wikipedia For Christmas, I thought I would talk a little bit about gifts... and one that you might consider giving.  Give a kid a Junior Achievement experience.  For free...
Yes, I said FREE... Sure, you can donate some cash to Junior Achievement, but what the kids REALLY need is adults that will come in to the classrooms and deliver the material.  Seriously... this takes an hour a week (plus commute time), or just one day if you do the "JA in a Day" program.
There are programs for kids from Kindergarten up through High School.  They cover topics … (10 comments)

things to do: Flashback Friday... Home for the Holidays... - 11/26/10 05:08 AM
Image via Wikipedia Could still happen.  I was writing about it last year, too.
My mortgage guy can usually close loans in about 22 work days... so there is still a little window to find a home and actually close before the end of the holidays.  You could...
ring in the new year in your new home... maybe even wake up Christmas morning in the new digs... enjoy the mortgage tax deduction for 2011... send the kids to great Gwinnett County schools... give your favorite toy a new garage... Of course, for every buyer there is a different motivation... but the … (1 comments)

things to do: Happy Thanksgiving... Don't Stress. - 11/26/10 05:04 AM
Image via Wikipedia Honestly, Thanksgiving is one of my least favorite holidays. I love the idea behind it, and can fully support being thankful for all of the wonderful things in my life… but I think that is something that we should remember daily, not just remember because there is a meal connected to it.
And about the meal… I’d rather have Japanese… A little sushi and some hibachi. Steak, shrimp, fried rice and a couple of tuna rolls with wasabi… Or maybe a juicy steak… Southwestern Pasta with chicken?
Turkey, dressing, cranberry (canberry?) sauce, pecan pie, pumpkin pie… I don’t … (11 comments)

things to do: Arcado Cub Scout Round-up, August 12th - 08/07/10 05:13 AM
Image via Wikipedia Arcado Elementary School will be hosting a 'Round-up' on Thursday, August 12th, for boys interested in joining Cub Scouts.  The event will run from 6:30pm until 7:30pm.
Cub Scouting is a program for boys between 1st and 5th grade.  Pack 551, the Arcado Elementary School Pack, has wonderful opportunities for boys to learn, socialize and gain experiences that they might otherwise not be able to have.
From the Boy Scouts of America website:
Activities are used to achieve the aims of Scouting—citizenship training, character development, and personal fitness. Many of the activities happen right in the den and … (4 comments)

things to do: Welcome Arcado's new Principal, Penny Palmer-Young - 08/07/10 04:52 AM
Image by lane.bailey via Flickr For the last few years, Arcado Elementary School has had Joe Ahrens in the top post.  He has positioned Arcado Elementary School as one of the highest ranked in Gwinnett County.  Excellent school spirit, very high test scores and a sense of community have all been fostered under his leadership.
This year, Arcado will have a new top administrator, Penny Palmer-Young.  She is committed to continuing the performance excellence of the school.
She was born and raised here in Gwinnett County, and graduated from Brookwood High School (she can be forgiven...  ;^ ).  Ms. Young has … (0 comments)

things to do: Ade For Al... Enjoy some Lemonade and Help a Family - 06/18/10 07:31 AM
Many of you might have heard about Al Real.  He is 8 years old, and a student at Arcado Elementary School here in Lilburn.  On June 7th, while playing with a friend, Al received 3rd degree burns over 80% of his body.  He was rushed to Grady's Burn Unit, and from there sent to the Shriner's Hospital's Burn Unit in Cincinnati, OH.  That is supposed to be one of the best burn specialists for children in the world. At best, he faces a long and arduous journey back to health...  And that journey has begun with skin grafts and surgeries.

things to do: Mud 4 Blood 7 in Kennesaw, GA... - 04/06/10 07:59 AM
May 1st is the day, Hooters of Kennesaw is the place.  The event is Mud for Blood 7.  It has grown to be one of LifeSouth's biggest collection events each year.
Each year, many of the local Four Wheel Drive clubs get together to donate blood and support regional charities.  In addition to the blood donations there is also a truck & car show, silent auction and door prize drawing for donors.  Some vendors also sponsor special deals for the day.  In the past, Omix-Ada has allowed Mud4Blood to host their annual "Scratch and Dent" sale with returned merchandise and stuff … (1 comments)

things to do: Smokerise Baptist Church Car Show - May 1st - 04/06/10 01:43 AM
It is time again for the Smokerise Baptist Church Car Show.  This will be the 12th annual show; it started in 1999.
Last year, despite weather that was challenging (causing the show to be delayed a week, and still raining at various times through the day), some very cool vehicles came out for the show.  In addition to cars and trucks, there were some cool vintage motorcycles.
Here is a little taste of the action from 2009.

Registration is from 9am until noon.  Judging runs from noon until 3pm.  The awards ceremony is at 3pm.  The vehicles are available for … (2 comments)

things to do: Spring has Sprung in Lilburn, GA... - 04/01/10 03:34 AM
Spring is busting out all over Lilburn, GA.  The usual signs are plain to see, and if you are missing them, the pine pollen will be here soon to make sure you see spring everywhere...
Of course, there are a few things that you need to do in order to prepare for spring.
Change the Smoke Detector batteries if you didn't do it with the time change.  Change the air filter on your HVAC.  Depending on your filter media, it usually needs to be changed at an interval between 30 days and 30 months.  The 1" thick (often blue) filters need … (3 comments)

things to do: Helen and Nora... Jewels of North GA - 01/14/10 03:00 PM
About 90 minutes north of Gwinnett County, GA, is the gateway to the North GA Mountains.  Unofficially, Cleveland, GA, is probably the gateway for those coming from the eastern suburbs of Atlanta.
And only 20 minutes north of Cleveland (and Babyland General, its most famous business) is Helen, GA.  It is a Bavarian-styled village, most known for its OktoberFest and tubing on the Chattahoochee River.
Of course, we visited during one of the coldest Januarys on record... no Oktoberfest and certainly no tubing on the river.
But that doesn't mean the town rolls up and closes...  No, there is still plenty … (2 comments)

things to do: The New and Improved Babyland General Hospital... - 01/13/10 12:48 AM
Have you been to Cleveland lately?  No, not Cleveland, Ohio (home of the World renowned Cleveland Clinic), but Cleveland, Georgia (home of the World renowned Babyland General)...
For the last three decades, Xavier Roberts has had Babyland General in Cleveland, GA.  Late in 2009, it moved to a new location just outside of town... toward Helen.  The new facility is pretty impressive.  But, for anyone that visited before their move, you'll feel right at home.  The Magical Cabbage Patch is almost unchanged.  And much of the decor carried over... but the new facility is MUCH larger. And it is still free.

things to do: Atlanta's First Playground... Norcross, GA - 12/13/09 02:45 PM
Have you heard of the Eastern Continental Divide?  It is an imaginary line that runs right through the Norcross Historic District... and all of the rivers and streams on one side of this line eventually flow into the Atlantic... on the other side, they flow into the Gulf of Mexico.
I knew a lot of things about Norcross... that wasn't one of them.
The site that is now Norcross, GA, sits along an old trail that ran from Fort Daniel (near Dacula ay Hog Mountain) to Peachtree Fort (near the confluence of Peachtree Creek and the Chattahoochee River in Atlanta).  It … (1 comments)

things to do: Kick the Tires and Light the Fires? or The Road Less Traveled. - 11/29/09 03:52 PM
When we get out into the world, there are two main methods of getting from Place A (where you are) to Place B (the portion of the world that you are getting out to).
Just get it done...  Enjoy the ride... Sometimes, you can blend the two...  But not often.
I have done both, and absolutely prefer "enjoying the ride".  But sometimes that isn't possible...  We've all been there.
A while back, I worked retail management.  I decided to surprise my mom in VA by showing up on Christmas.  So, after working from 6:00am to 6:00pm, I made the 500+ mile … (3 comments)

things to do: And Now For Something Completely Different... and Flat - 11/12/09 06:40 AM
Do you know who “ Flat Stanley” is?  Ours is actually a “Flat Garrett“, but the idea is the same…
He is traveling the world, in an envelope.  We set up a website at FlatGarrett.info to chronicle the visits Flat Garrett makes between now and Spring Break.
Right now, Flat Garrett is hanging out with Bob near Ann Arbor, Michigan.  He will soon be heading back to Seattle, Washington, where Flat Garrett may get to hit a Sonics game and go up in the Space Needle.  In mid-February, he will be visiting Lisa in New Orleans for a ride on a Mardi … (10 comments)

things to do: What are your back-up solutions? - 11/01/09 01:10 PM
If you haven't been watching Twitter or FaceBook (specifically me on Twitter or FaceBook), I had a hard drive crash on Friday.  It isn't good... I used to back up pretty regularly, but had kind of drifted away from it lately.  It isn't good.
The hard drive has started clicking and might cost $$$$$$ to rebuild.  But this isn't about that.
This is about backing up.  There is a new 320GB drive in my Tablet and IF I can recover the data from the old drive, it will have about 80 gigs of data and programs.  So...  Here are a few … (12 comments)
