video: Lane's Newest Toy... CCotD - 09/01/11 11:43 PM
It is NO secret around here that I am a Car Guy.  I guess that would be why I am THE Garage Guy, too.  For the last 4+ years one thing I have had NO problem being transparent about is my love of things automotive.  Here on this blog, as well as my blog, LaneBailey.com, and my website, GarageHomesUSA.com, I have written numerous posts about cars, garages and cool tools.
Recently, I started a blog solely targeted to other car lovers.  It is called CoolCaroftheDay.com.  And because I seem to be a glutton for punishment, I also created a network of … (2 comments)

video: Wayback Wednesday... Political Incorrectness - 11/20/10 12:08 AM
Image via Wikipedia There is a video clip that has been EVERYWHERE on the internet.  It has been re-subtitled more times than I can count.  Almost any subject that is causing anyone frustration, from the collapse of the housing bubble to the Democrat meltdown to the way some people drive in traffic...  They've all had a version of this video.
And while it isn't politically correct, it is funny.  And I don't care about being politically correct.  I prefer funny.  And Bill Mahr is politically correct... and NOT generally funny.
Pop back a couple of years and see what the fuss … (7 comments)

video: Flashback Friday... Catch the Wave? - 10/22/10 10:13 AM
Image via Wikipedia Last year everyone was talking about the Google Wave... it was the hottest 'beta' invite around.  There were hundreds of blog posts from all sorts of tech luminaries about the Google Wave and how it was going to revolutionize communications... rich media, text, video, audio, websites... all together.
About two and a half months ago, Google announced that the Wave was going to die... probably after the end of 2010.
I wrangled a Wave invite last year.  It was cool... but not cool enough to actually use.  And I guess that was why nobody bothered to really use … (10 comments)

video: A little more about an Atlanta rebarcamp - 04/23/10 12:17 AM
I still haven't kicked this idea.
But that doesn't mean it is a certainty, yet.  There are a lot of details to be worked out, such as venue, if there will be a cost and the exact date.  Of course, there also needs to be a team to make it happen.
But before we put together a team and start scouting venues and getting all of the details in place, there are about 3,572 questions.  Here are the first 8...

video: A New Video Resource... Video Connector - 04/04/10 09:26 PM
I recently subscribed to the Video Connector.  It is a cool new service from MY video provider. Tara Jones and TJ Hedges, the folks behind the Video Connector, are friends of mine.  they are also the folks I turn to in order to provide video for my listings.
Reel Productions has grown to be one of the best real estate video companies in the country.  They have travelled coast to coast for big national brokerages.  They have had agents fly them all over and charter helicopters for them to do property or neighborhood profiles.  They have presented at major conferances ranging … (0 comments)

video: I'll be happy in 86.97%... - 02/28/10 02:31 PM
"What is he talking about now?"
That is likely the question after seeing the confusing title...
Over the last couple of years, I have done sporadic surveys of how many listings have the maximum number of pictures allowed by our local MLS...  Currently the maximum is 20.  It has been as low as 8, just a few years ago.
The opposite of 86.97% is 13.03%...
And 13.03% is how many of the listings that have come on the market in the last 7 days that have the maximum number of pictures.  There are a few things to keep in mind...

video: Foray into Geekdom... COOL! - 02/21/10 09:25 PM
Ok, who knows what an "unboxing" is?
For those that so, you are a a geek.  I am too.
For those that don't, it is generally an EXTREMELY dry video where a reviewer opens the box of a groovy new product and introduces the viewer to all of the cool stuff inside.  Usually there is a monotone voice over that makes Golf announcers seem exciting. The reviewer pulls out each and every piece and describes it's function...
"This is the AC wall adapter.  It charges the battery and can run the laptop from AC power."  Really?  Whoda thunkit?

video: They are ALL someone's kid... - 02/21/10 10:15 AM
While doing a little bit of research for my Video Sunday post on LaneBailey.com, I ran across this video...  I have to say...   it brought a tear to my eye.
A lot of my friends on Active Rain know that my 5 year old plays ice hockey.  He loves it.  He isn't particularly good, but he's 5...  And there is such joy on his face while he is out on the ice playing.  And as I watch the Winter Olympics, I often think about the parents... and the sacrifices THEY made in order for their kids to become these incredible athletes.

video: Joomla Content Helpers... (WordPress, too) - 01/18/10 11:22 AM
As mentioned last time in WordPress and Joomla and Active Rain… oh my!, dynamic websites are the direction the web is going.  In order to live in the dynamic website world, you need to produce content.
That is the first problem.  Good, engaging content doesn't create itself.  Readers want to see pictures and video.  They want interaction.

video: The Great Posterous Experiment... - 11/26/09 08:32 PM
I have been VERY curious about Posterous.  I have watched about it, written about it, listened about it and played with it.  But I have really "used" it much.
I'm a Man with an Excuse Plan...
While everyone else is shopping for nifty junk they don't need for people they may not like that much, I will be road tripping with a friend of mine.  Atlanta to Hampton, VA on Black Friday... then Hampton to Gaithersburg, MD on Saturday... and Gaithersburg back to Atlanta on Sunday.
Pat and I have done a fair number of road trip together, but previously only … (9 comments)

video: Catch a Wave or Make a Plan? - 11/19/09 08:38 PM
I've talked about it, as have many others...
Social Media Plan...
But is it even possible?
During this morning's Social Media Breakfast - Atlanta, one of our members was talking about social media planning... and something occured to me.  Just moments before, we were talking about how social media tools had changed dramatically in just the last few months.  So...
How can we make a plan for a rapidly changing landscape?
Can a surfer make a plan for the wave?  Or does the wave unfold and he reads it and responds?

It would seem obvious that while a surf has … (8 comments)

video: Implementation Day... - 11/18/09 07:41 AM
One of the things I find useful after a great day of tech training is to take a day to concentrate on implementation.
#VREBC...  COOL!
Hundreds of "tech forward" real estate professionals around the country took time out of their schedule to attend one or more of DOZENS of webinars for Virtual rebarcamp.  But it doesn't matter if the event is an rebarcamp, REtechSouth, RainCamp or something else... the idea is the same.
Learning is cool... but IMPLEMENTATION is KEY!
Taking a decmpression day is a good idea.  When I am done, I have hundreds of ideas and notes and possibilities … (9 comments)

video: Video Sunday... Fast and Slow... - 10/25/09 10:53 PM
Every once in a while I run across a video that is amazing... and then there are some that are hilarious.  Tonight's installment has one of each.
I'll start with slow and amazing.
I've always felt that motorsports represented a kind of dance...  Man, Machine and Talent... combined into an artistic expression.  The footwork of the racer going through the gears while blipping the throttle on up and down shifts, feathering the brakes and strategically slipping the clutch or trailbraking while increasing throttle pressure...  All of this framed by the rhythm of the steering inputs.
This video slows down the … (3 comments)

video: Google Waving... - 10/21/09 11:16 PM
I just got my Google Wave invite.  I have watched a few of the videos, and I am going to have to give this thing a rip.  Combining text, chat, video, audio and a bunch of things I haven't even thought of yet... with email... seems pretty cool.
Thinking back not all that long ago, I wasn't doing most of those things seperately, much less combined.  In  fact, a few years ago, many of these technologies not widely adopted because of the bandwidth required.
Now it is possible that someone could send me a message and WATCH LETTER BY LETTER as … (7 comments)

video: THIS is a Commercial. Wow... - 08/26/09 09:32 PM
I'd watch this on TV several times in a row. (and this is NOT real estate related...)
Up until a few years ago, the American Rally Series (Rally America) had regular television coverage.  But that has dried up.  Too many college football games I guess.  But auto racing needs sponsors.  And sponsors need visibility to make it worthwhile.
Ken Block is one of America's Rally aces.  He is bold, brash and talented.  He is also very creative.  He is delivering something of value for his sponsors... in a new and creative way.  He has done several videos featuring his rally cars, … (7 comments)

video: In Atlanta? Interested in Active Rain and Blogging? Take a look... - 08/20/09 02:05 PM
I just got the confirmation from Corey at Garner Creek at Parkview.  We are going to be presenting a seminar and discussion about Active Rain, blogging and Social Networking at GarnerCreek at Parkview in Lilburn on Thursday, August 27th.
The program will start at 11:00am, and lunch will follow at Noon.
I'm pretty excited.  This was one of the first things I thought about when I entered the Ambassador Program here at Active Rain.  There is so much great information here, and getting the word out has been a priority for me for a long time.
I have often referred … (10 comments)

video: 8 Tools #3A "Sweet Embeddable You"... before - 08/17/09 11:34 PM
Ok, so if you have been following along, you have seen that you really need both a self-hosted WordPress blog and an Active|Rain RainMaker blog.
You say, "OK there Skippy, now what?"
Well bunky, you need content... GREAT, compelling, addictive content.  And you need to present it in a great, compelling and addictive way.  Venture out from the wall of words and throw so fun at the wall and see if it sticks.
This post is actually what I call a second level post...  it is broken up into bite size chunks that are easier to chew than a straight up … (6 comments)

video: 8 Tools #3B "Sweet Embeddable You"... after - 08/17/09 11:26 PM
So, just a moment ago I posted the other half of this blog.  I worked VERY hard to make it visually unappealing and kind of boring.  I did that on purpose.  For a purpose.
You see, there are SO many ways to add rich media to your WordPress and Active|Rain posts.
YouTube (and dozens of other video sharing sites) SlideShare (and some other presentation sharing sites) Flickr (and the other photo sharing sites) MagToo (I don't know of any other panorama sharing sites) Pictures Graphics And most of them are free or nearly free.  And they are easy to use.

video: Video is the tool, and these are the artists... - 08/06/09 09:50 PM
For buyers, getting to know a home is part of the process.  Seeing it, feeling it, walking around the taking it in...  That is great if you are around the corner, or even across town... but what if you are unable to take that time to tour scores of properties before pulling the trigger?  Maybe you are a busy executive, maybe you are relocating and have a day or three in a strange town to buy a house...  Maybe you just want more than 8 (or 12 or 16) pictures from the MLS.
Video is one of the solutions.  It is … (10 comments)

video: 101 Cars, Part 80... - 07/05/09 10:21 PM
Image by Eyeshotpictures via Flickr I have always loved the styling of the classic Indian Chief motorcycles. The full streamlined fenders, the classic lines... the flow... looking like they are rolling even as they sit still.
But, the price is steep... and there is an alternative that takes the styling of the classic Indian and marries it to fuel injection and modern reliability. The alternative is the Kawasaki Vulcan Drifter... They were made from 1999 to 2005. And they were a commercial flop... I talked to a dealer while new bikes were still in the showrooms, and he remarked that … (0 comments)
