wordpress: Lane's Newest Toy... CCotD - 09/01/11 04:43 PM
It is NO secret around here that I am a Car Guy.  I guess that would be why I am THE Garage Guy, too.  For the last 4+ years one thing I have had NO problem being transparent about is my love of things automotive.  Here on this blog, as well as my blog, LaneBailey.com, and my website, GarageHomesUSA.com, I have written numerous posts about cars, garages and cool tools.
Recently, I started a blog solely targeted to other car lovers.  It is called CoolCaroftheDay.com.  And because I seem to be a glutton for punishment, I also created a network of … (2 comments)

wordpress: Joomla Content Helpers... (WordPress, too) - 01/18/10 03:22 AM
As mentioned last time in WordPress and Joomla and Active Rain… oh my!, dynamic websites are the direction the web is going.  In order to live in the dynamic website world, you need to produce content.
That is the first problem.  Good, engaging content doesn't create itself.  Readers want to see pictures and video.  They want interaction.
Image via Wikipedia
Image via CrunchBase I'm AT LEAST as guilty as anyone else of not serving it up sometimes.  One one of my blogs I don't have any access to a plug-in called Zemanta, and I have to jump through hoops to use … (7 comments)

wordpress: WordPress and Joomla and Active Rain... oh my! - 01/13/10 04:20 AM
It is obvious to everyone in the real estate business by now that the future of marketing revolves around the internet... and websites.  And the "Yester-tech" of a static website isn't going to cut it.  The days of "My broker provides me with a website at www.myname.brokerage.com" are gone.  And honestly, the days of a site coded purely in html are pretty toasted as well...  The new paradigm is what are referred to as Dynamic Websites.  Dynamic sites are exemplified by blogs, web magazines and other sites that are continually updated and interactive.
Back in "the day", a website was little … (19 comments)

wordpress: RE WordCamp... Cool. - 12/22/09 03:22 PM
You've been to an rebarcamp or three...
You have decided that you want to have a WordPress blog AND know how to use it...
You think blogging is fun and cool... and a great way to connect with your market...

I just ran across this little gem, and wish I was closer to Denver.  I would definately be up for it.  I love my WordPress blogs.  It is a cool platform, and has a tremendous amount of flexibility.  I still love Active|Rain, but have been on WordPress for two years.
There are so many options... one of the big issues … (7 comments)

wordpress: What about WordPress MU? - 11/24/09 02:49 PM
I was wandering around the control panel for my webhost (I use BlueHost - affiliate link) and noticed that I had 12 blogs I was administering.  Don't panic, that includes my wife's websites for her company, as well as a family blog and the blog for my son's Flat Stanley.
But still...  Keeping up with plug-in updates, WordPress updates and other stuff can take a little time.  Not to mention that I have to go to a bunch of different sites in order to write posts or deal with comments...  Whatever.  A BUNCH of sites.
So I started thinking about WPMU, … (9 comments)

wordpress: Minor Tweaks... For Now... - 09/13/09 04:04 PM
A few days ago I wrote about my overwhelming desire to mess with my blog.  I get this from time to time... I just can't help it.
As a hot rodder, I like to tweak things.  When my wife sees a nice car, truck or Jeep, I see a platform to make something cooler.  When she sees a pile of junk, I still see a platform to make something cooler.  No matter what... it is a platform to make something cooler...
My blog is the same.  I like it.  It is functional.  It looks good (I think).  It does most of … (4 comments)

wordpress: It's that time of year again... Let's Tweak my Blog... - 09/08/09 03:32 PM
I can't help it.  Each year, as summer wanes towards fall, I get the itch to mess with my blog.  I don't know why... I just can't help it.  I like it.  I think it is pretty cool, but I just want to mix it up again.
So, because I know that I am really bad at avoiding the compulsion, I know that I have to start looking around at WordPress themes for LaneBailey.com.  There are tons of cool themes that are free...
Of course, the other problem is that I also want to make some structural changes to GarageHomesUSA.com.  That … (7 comments)

wordpress: In Atlanta? Interested in Active Rain and Blogging? Take a look... - 08/20/09 07:05 AM
I just got the confirmation from Corey at Garner Creek at Parkview.  We are going to be presenting a seminar and discussion about Active Rain, blogging and Social Networking at GarnerCreek at Parkview in Lilburn on Thursday, August 27th.
The program will start at 11:00am, and lunch will follow at Noon.
I'm pretty excited.  This was one of the first things I thought about when I entered the Ambassador Program here at Active Rain.  There is so much great information here, and getting the word out has been a priority for me for a long time.
I have often referred … (10 comments)

wordpress: 8 Tools #3A "Sweet Embeddable You"... before - 08/17/09 04:34 PM
Ok, so if you have been following along, you have seen that you really need both a self-hosted WordPress blog and an Active|Rain RainMaker blog.
You say, "OK there Skippy, now what?"
Well bunky, you need content... GREAT, compelling, addictive content.  And you need to present it in a great, compelling and addictive way.  Venture out from the wall of words and throw so fun at the wall and see if it sticks.
This post is actually what I call a second level post...  it is broken up into bite size chunks that are easier to chew than a straight up … (6 comments)

wordpress: 8 Tools #3B "Sweet Embeddable You"... after - 08/17/09 04:26 PM
So, just a moment ago I posted the other half of this blog.  I worked VERY hard to make it visually unappealing and kind of boring.  I did that on purpose.  For a purpose.
You see, there are SO many ways to add rich media to your WordPress and Active|Rain posts.
YouTube (and dozens of other video sharing sites) SlideShare (and some other presentation sharing sites) Flickr (and the other photo sharing sites) MagToo (I don't know of any other panorama sharing sites) Pictures Graphics And most of them are free or nearly free.  And they are easy to use.

wordpress: Impress With WordPress... Tools for Web 2.0 Agents, #2 - 08/15/09 02:36 PM
This is the second in a series of posts on tools and technologies for real estate agents that want to compete in a Web 2.0 world.
Let's get this out of the way at the top of the show...  There are two "brands" of WordPress to pick from.  The one I will be almost completely ignoring is WordPress.com.  That is the version that is NOT self-hosted.  Basically, unless you pay to upgrade your account, the URL will be WhatYouPick.WordPress.com.  That isn't the only thing, though...
Related posts from other people's blogs can show up on your post... and you don't have … (14 comments)

wordpress: Why bother with a blog? There are all of these other tools... - 08/01/09 10:10 AM
I get asked that question pretty regularly.  I am active here on Active|Rain... I'm even an Ambassador.  I'm linked up on LinkedIn.  I'm showing my face on FaceBook, with 4 business pages and a personal page.  I am a solid light on Flickr.  I tweet on Twitter, Digg and find things del.icio.us.  I am also on about 50 other networks to a lesser extent... from music to Jeeping and sports cars.
Why do I need a blog since I am using all of those other tools to interact with consumers?
Well, for one thing there is only so much you can … (65 comments)

wordpress: Social Media Breakfast Atlanta #1... a great time - 07/23/09 01:16 PM
The first Social Media Breakfast Atlanta event was this morning at the Duluth Diner.  At 7:00am, about 20 dedicated Social Media Adventurers gathered to discuss better ways to deploy social media for their businesses.
Ranging from neophytes to experienced, the common thread was a desire to learn and grow.
The first order of business was to talk about one of the basic conventions of marketing on social media… Don’t be a butt-head… engage others with meaningful conversation.  Educate your target market.  Interact with them.  Listen.
We also talked about building future events.  The next event is going to be in Cobb … (6 comments)

wordpress: Community Builder? Go nuts with this one... - 05/29/09 05:29 PM
This ISN'T about Jeremy and Brad...  It isn't even about Rich or Mike.  It is about something that WE do as real estate agents.  We build communities.  Builders build houses.  People build homes.  Neighbors build communities.  We are the ultimate neighbor... when we are really doing our job.
I found a new toy.  I haven't rolled it out yet, but I am excited...  Really excited!
BuddyPress...
WordPress is a very cool tool.  It is quite flexible, and very easy to use.  It can be made to be a lot of different things, from a blog to a news site.  It can … (26 comments)

wordpress: My first 'Meet-Up' was this evening... - 05/26/09 05:11 PM
After going to #rebcclt a little over a week ago, one of the things on my 'ToDo List' was going to a Meet-Up.  Tonight I had the chance to go to my first...  It was a WordPress user group.
I actually ended up instructing.  Most of the group were putting up their first WordPress blogs.  A couple had put up blogs, but were having issues making them do what they wanted.  Ken, the guy that put the group together helped the people that were setting up their blogs.  I took over helping the people that were having issues.
It was a … (14 comments)

wordpress: The Easiest Optimized WordPress Landing Page You Can Make! - 05/18/09 01:24 PM
Technologists and marketers agree that the best way to convert site visitors is to give them EXACTLY what they want as soon as they show up on your website.  And for years, the technologically astute and companies with budgets for this sort of thing have built Landing Pages optimized for particular consumers to deliver the information that they desire, right there on the front page.
But us little guys or those that couldn't design their own pages were locked out.
However, lurking in the capability... largely unnoticed... of WordPress has been that of making customized landing pages.  Dozens.  More than dozens.

wordpress: One easy reason to be everywhere... - 05/16/09 06:02 PM
During the #rebcclt video session, one of the things we talked about was using property videos, and syndicating them to a wide range of networks.  The primary reason discussed was that it would be seen by the maximum number of potential buyers for the property... but we DID talk about the other reason... the cooler reason.
SEO...
That's right.  Search Engine Optimized agents utilize video (along with something else I'll mention in a moment...) in order to boost their site rankings.  The videos are very good at delivering 'spiders' to a destination of the agent's choosing...
And they aren't all.  So … (9 comments)

wordpress: Implementation! The hardest part of REBC... - 05/16/09 10:32 AM
That really is the key, isn't it?
We got back last night from #rebcclt (RE Bar Camp, Charlotte).  It was a great event.  From Thursday evening's social/networking/bull riding all of the way through the sessions on Friday, it went great.  We weren't able to stick around for the Friday night networking or the Saturday "Hangin' at the River" portion, but it was a great time, anyway.
Chad and the group of dedicated volunteers did a great job... but now is the hard part for the many attendees.  Implementing all of the cool stuff that we learned.
So... of course the question … (6 comments)

wordpress: Doing the Ikky... - 04/11/09 06:32 AM
You might recall about a week and a half ago I wrote a post wondering if I should change the theme (in a BIG way) on my LaneBailey.com blog.  I was looking REALLY hard at the Ikarus theme to replace my Shifter theme system.  I had been running the Shifter theme system for around a year and a half, and was quite happy with the performance, but after seeing Ikarus, I really wanted to give it a try.
Well, I did it... I made the change.
Yep.  I dived in and made the change.  I think that my estimates of the … (6 comments)

wordpress: Twisting in the wind... tough decision time - 04/02/09 03:12 PM
I am agonizing over a decision...  I shouldn't be, but I am.
I feel like my blog need a giant make-over.  And so I have two options.
I can work with the current theme... Shifter...  It has been very good for me for quite a while.  I know that it is quite flexible, and I can make it do a lot of things.  But, I would basically need to re-work all of the widgets and elements...  There is a theme I really want to play with.  I actually wrote about it a couple of days ago, and I have been playing … (11 comments)
