Last week was a very tough week for mortgage rates as the ended the week lower than when the week began. The week began with some nice gains in the bond market which helps mortgage rates improve. Last week mortgage rates again ended the week higher than when the week began. it was very volatile week littered with economic releases. The main reason for mortgage rates worsening last week was INFLATION. As previously written about bonds and mortgage rates hate inflation, so anytime inflation is presented the bond market and mortgage rates worsen. Last week ended badly for mortgage rates and the bond market. We had a great run with rates at two-year lows. The bond market did not like the jobs report last week, which began a sell off that is continuing today. Mortgage rates worsened by about .25% over last week. Last week was a good week for the bond market meaning it was also a good week for mortgage rates. Rates ended the week better than it began and are now at there lowest point in two years. The reason for the rate improvement was the bond market performance. The bond market performed very well thanks in part to a tame reading on inflation.
