Small Business in Nova Scotia

                I have a saying. “Money is like rain and you have to be where it is falling.” What I mean by this is that it is much easier to get ahead where the economy is strong or booming. When money is flowing it is much easier to be prosperous. Nova Scotian’s have historically relocated across Canada to find jobs and opportunities not available at home. Over my 35 year business career the rain (money) has very seldom fallen in Nova Scotia.
              When I was a young man the individuals who seemed to be successful financially were those who owned their own business. I had worked away while in the military and as an under ground miner up north. I was never content and every minute I was away I wanted to be home. This desire to be home prompted me to try various business ventures to essentially create my own job. I also wanted to help my family as my mother was a widow with 6 boys and poverty had been a way of life for us. I was the oldest and felt responsible to help my mother and brothers. Most of my brothers started their working careers working for me in one of my different business ventures as did my daughters in later years. In the public’s eye I have been successful but I have to say I find today’s business environment very disturbing and worrisome.
            My last article (My Rant) I lamented on a lot of the concerns I felt were common concerns for us all. That over all feeling or collective mind set we all have that things just seem to be out of whack. That feeling that we have gone from a land of opportunity to a reality of struggling to survive. (Not all of us want to move to Alberta.) I normally try and make my articles positive and upbeat because I know we all need encouragement as we deal with the struggles of everyday life. I also know we all experience very similar problems including illness, problems in a relationship, the loss of a loved one and in many cases financial hardship. Don’t fool yourself remember what Johnny Cash said “Having money just means you have to worry about everything except money.” It is definitely an illusion that having money will solve all of life’s problems. However it is definitely a reality that we all need a certain amount of money to be comfortable, reasonably content and provide for the necessities of life like food and shelter. This brings me to my point.
          Other than a few hot spots of economic activity most of our communities are in economic demise with not enough money to go around. In these communities small business people can not overcome the hardships imposed by 3 levels of government, the fact there are no young people to hire and the reality that most of the best jobs are with the government. Although everyone touts the importance of small business the reality is small business is under constant attack by over regulation and taxation.
BDC has a forum on Linked In and one of the discussions has been around the Conference Board of Canada releasing the fact that Canada ranks 13th out of 16 industrialized countries getting a “D” for innovation. When I went to school a “D” meant you failed. That’s Canada as a whole not just Nova Scotia. I believe these result reflect directly on the environment surrounding small business in our province and our country. This fact is very disturbing when it is obvious future prosperity will belong to those countries that innovate and adapt to the evolving new world reality of one marketplace. Over my lifetime I have watched the decline of such traditional employers just as farming, lumbering and fishing. There was mismanagement and short term thinking by relative decision makers over the years. I realize hindsight is crystal clear and laying blame solves no problems but we should be able to learn from our mistakes. Much of Canada’s current prosperity is tied to our natural resources which we market to the US our biggest trading partner. Western oil being one of those resources. Recent innovation and improvements in technology have given the US the ability to tap into huge reserves of natural gas and oil with in its own boundaries. Experts calculate that with-in a few years the US will no longer need to buy our oil or anybody’s oil or natural gas. They will be self sufficient. What will happen to all those jobs in Alberta then? Time will tell but the writing is on the wall and if ever innovation was needed in business in order to secure our future prosperity now is the time. We have a very small window of time to adapt and change.
     I believe many (If not most) small business people are operating in an atmosphere of fear and afraid to take any chances. Business owners do not trust the government or the banks enough to take a chance and even try to innovate. There is a lot of lip service and propaganda out there that would convince you everyone bends over backwards to help small business people. Nothing is further from the truth. Arguably part of the current mind set can be traced to the great recession and the losses incurred by many small business people with their retirement investments but that doesn’t explain Canada’s ranking in innovation. All of the world’s industrial countries (in most cases) were hit harder than Canada by the economic downturn. That being the case why aren’t we confident with our business environment and leading in innovation?
      The truth is most communities economies are mostly impacted by local events not global events. Yes it is great PR when government attracts a Michelin or IBM to our province and no one can argue the benefit of local well paying jobs but those times are mostly past because of lower labour costs in other countries. Local innovation that can be exported to a world wide market is the key to future prosperity. In order for that to happen business needs the support of government and access to risk capital from lenders. Business owners need an atmosphere of encouragement not persecution. I am reminded of a comment my daughter made to me one day. “Dad business is your passion.” “You love what you do.” “To us this is just a job you can’t expect us to feel the way you do.” She was wrong. Business is not my passion. Business is essential to the survival of me and my family. I chose to build my business in the province I love and working for people I care about. You see when times were tough I had no place to go. My only option was to work harder to survive. I was convinced that eventually things would improve telling my wife for 35 years “If we just get through this winter we will have it made.” I realize now there is no such thing as having it made. I also have the benefit of hindsight and no illusions when I assess the future here in Nova Scotia for small business. It is much tougher today than it was 35 years ago when I started. Entrepreneurs face many more challenges but the market place is now the world. We can prosper and overcome. The solution is actually quite simple. For governments need only simplify regulation and if they can’t help just get out of the way. For lenders let local managers make local decisions and raise their lending limits. Provincial and Federal governments could provide simpler and larger business loan insurance programs for small business loans to reduce the risk for the lender. (At least improve on existing programs.)The news media could give these local initiatives the same headlines they give the big corporate hand outs. This would give the politicians the political will and electoral benefit they require. Business attitudes would improve and local entrepreneurs with roots in local communities would innovate and create jobs. Tourism is one industry that comes to mind. Technology certainly another.
    Small local business is the key to our future here in Nova Scotia and with a collective spirit of co-operation in our local communities we can overcome the challenge of what is becoming a world economy. Nova Scotia can innovate and market to the world. Now is our window of opportunity.
