activerain: Contests: love'm or hate'm? - 02/29/08 03:15 PM
There seems to be some controversy over the "greatest real estate agent in the world contest" and I'm not sure why. People love contests. We love to WIN. Its that simple. Publisher's clearing house built their whole business model around it, long ago and its still going strong today. So I did a quick little search here on AR, and was surprised at the results. We've had more contests here than you can imagine. Here are just a few of the ones I found: Laurie Manny's Contest this was a great idea, to generate interest in great posts than may have fallen through the

activerain: Windows Vista - Is it right for you? - 09/04/07 03:23 PM
The big rush to Vista that Microsoft was hoping for never materialized and with some good reasons. If you buy a new PC, you're going to be stuck with Vista whether you like it or not. Part of the abysmal response to Vista was due to (in part) pc manufacturors building pcs with inadequate hardware to run Vista properly. A PC needs at least 1 gig of memory and I would recommend dual core processor as well. But is it right for you? If you use a lot of older software applications (or older hardware), definitely not. Quite a few older

activerain: Some of the best posts never read - 08/15/07 05:45 PM
Well, here they are. Sadly, I didn't receive as many submissions as last time around. I've mixed up the posts quite a bit, some were picked because of their subject matter (and will hopefully spark some debate) others because of just how well written they were. http://activerain.com/blogsview/167378/Working-Across-The-Miles http://activerain.com/blogsview/168593/Window-Energy-Efficiency http://activerain.com/blogsview/168530/Mortgage-Meltdown-what-is http://activerain.com/blogsview/168528/Discount-Listings-Bait-Swap http://activerain.com/blogsview/168526/LENDING-MARKET-AND-THE http://activerain.com/blogsview/168499/Top-Ten-Reasons-to http://activerain.com/blogsview/168477/The-Baby-The-Bath If you have any that I have missed, please email me the link for inclusion in the next series. -Charles

activerain: More of the best posts never read - 08/08/07 04:44 PM
As promised, I'll be putting up another list of some of the best posts never read. If you have some posts that you put a lot of time and effort into that were just overlooked here on AR, please send me the url of the post. I'll be picking out my favorites and putting them in a post. Hopefully, the post will generate some reads to your individual posts and perhaps be featured to increase traffic. The deadline for submitting your posts will be this Sunday evening. Additional requests will be held for the next post of this type. Thanks. -

activerain: Raining in the connections - 07/07/07 09:49 PM
One of the advantages of living in Las Vegas is that quite a few people all over the US, Canada and the rest of the world want to visit here. Vegas truly is the entertainment capital of the world and the figures released shows that entertainment has surpassed gaming for high revenue generators for the Las Vegas strip properties. A few weeks ago I got an email from Eric Badgley asking for the best things to do over the fourth of July holiday. I sent my personal picks and warned him about the heat! We hit 120 on the fourth, but that

activerain: The 300 - 06/10/07 05:08 PM
RAINERS......PREPARE FOR GLORY!!! Okay, so its not that 300, but our 300th post. Well, its been just under a year since I received an invitation to join Active Rain. So many changes have happened its hard to name them all. New features added, then removed (anyone remember the forum?) and the site is still evolving. Even the look of the site has changed quite a bit from the original vision. Others were invited to join (a shout out to our Canadian friends) and now there are over 33,000 rainers. You try to make milestone posts special, but today I'm just coming

activerain: What new friends have you made? - 05/20/07 05:50 PM
The main purpose of Active Rain is social networking, but it seems that quite a few members have forgotten that. Several of the members here I have seen before, lurking on different forums. Some I've already started to talk to, outside of a forum or site. Last year I finally got to meet some of them face to face. I put up a post about the meeting and wanted to thank you all for your comments. This week, I finally got to meet Toby. Toby was invited to AR by my friend, Ken Smith. The three of us use the same

activerain: Too funny - 02/02/07 12:54 PM
I had put up a post, Just for laughs, with a link to the Weird Al video for the song "White and Nerdy". If you haven't seen it by now, you're probably one of the 10 people on the planet that hasn't. I was reading Jim Boykin's blog and stumbled across this post Linking Dirty - Blackhat and Dirty. If you haven't seen the Weird Al video yet, watch it first otherwise none of this will make sense. He re-worded the song to make it seo relevant. Pretty funny and worth a quick read. Enjoy. :) -Charles

activerain: Fame Becomes Her - 01/16/07 05:48 PM
I'm sure that everyone here has known someone or has a family member that has changed after they came into a great deal of money or attention. Sometimes that can cause a rift in a friendship or strain family relations. Ask anyone who has won the lottery. Or has had the media focus on their life. Well, that is not always the case. Sometimes, fame becomes them. Of course, its not the first time that Toy, my traveling Pekingese has been in the news. Back in 2003, she managed to escape the house and was taken in by a neighbor. Unfortunately,

activerain: A nice pat on the back - 12/28/06 09:43 PM
Jacqui got the nicest email earlier this month and I kept meaning to put up a post about it. It was sent by another member, Lysa Napolitano It came at just the right moment as well. It's been a hard year for us (rescue/pet wise). I thought I'd share it with you all. Hello Jacqulyn,I came upon your profile by way of the contest on the blogging page, my intrest peaked when I saw your community work. God Bless You! I too love all animals and am hard at work on two events for St. Judes locally here in Ormond Beach, FL. I

activerain: Are your profiles working for you? - 12/27/06 10:56 PM
Quite a few of the seo savvy members here maintain a profile like their one on Active Rain on several different networks. It can be quite a challenge to maintain multiple sites, not to mention adding content and promoting your main site. Its obvious from the online ticker now that the lion share of AR members are just phoning it in when it comes to their profile. I can't stress enough that is a mistake, in my opinion. Golden opportunities like this site don't come along that often. In addition to this blog, I also have a blogger blog, which just made

activerain: Just for laughs - 12/26/06 06:59 PM
This one of the most watched things on YouTube. Its a parody of a video by chamillionaire. Sometimes you just need a good laugh. Unfortunately, I can't get the imbedded player to post here correctly, so use this url: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TiCty3DMFC4 Perhaps that could be added to the Active Rain wish list? Enjoy and hope you all had a nice holiday! -Charles

activerain: Active Rain Wish List - 12/11/06 05:23 PM
Just six months ago we joined Active Rain through an invitation from my friend, Glenn Ginsburg. At that time, there was just over 2,000 members. You couldn't customize your profile, no one was in the forum at all and there were not many ways to organize anything. Fast forward to December 2006. Now there is nearly 11,000 members. While groups are still labeled "beta", I'm sure they are here to stay. I haven't been around much at all for the last month. We're in the process of selling a rental property in Green Valley, remodeling and making preparations for our annual holiday

activerain: Mr. Smith goes to Las Vegas - 11/14/06 10:46 PM
Pubcon, the Search Engine Opitimization convention sponsored by Webmaster World kicked off today. I got to meet some of my online friends for the first time, including AR's own Ken Smith. We met the day before the conference at one of my favorite buffets at the Orleans. This site is about making connections with other agents in different areas. Matt, Max and their spouses joined a little later. It was a really great time and was nice to be able to get to know them better. We ended up staying there in buffet for a couple of hours chewing the fat.

activerain: 200th Post - 11/11/06 09:29 PM
I meant to put up a special post for number 100, but I missed the boat. Earlier today I had a great idea for this post. I sat down at my desk, waited anxiously for my pc to boot. I clicked internet explorer, clicked my link to ar and .... couldn't pull the site up. Doh! I tried again and then got a message that the system was down for maintenance.... A lot of times we use outside events as an excuse or justification. Well if that hadn't happened, I would/could have done this or that. We're looking at these minor setbacks

activerain: Active Rain - The next phase - 11/08/06 06:47 PM
It the last few months Active Rain has made some impressive leaps. In the last 6 months, the network has grown to almost 9,000 members. A truly phenominal accomplishment considering the number of networking sites that have popped up in the last few months. The site now has 29,400 pages indexed in google and is showing 4,750 backlinks in google at the time of this writing. It would surprise me if the page rank didn't go up from 5 to 7 on the next page rank update, especially if the site keeps growing like it has. The 3 month reach per million

activerain: Active Rain Contest - 10/24/06 06:03 PM
I'm sure quite a few of the members will be attending Halloween parties this weekend. We haven't had a contest in a while (speaking of which, any word on when the graphic contest winner will be announced?). So I was thinking, what if we had a costume contest? Members send in pics of themselves in costume. The best (and worse) could be posted in an AR blog post and the winners picked by Matt, Caleb & co. What you do you all think? -Charles

activerain: Another member contest - 10/15/06 03:08 PM
Membership on Active Rain has now exceeded 7,200 people at the time of this writing. Congrats! I know we've had a contest to guess the number of new members before (September), but how about if we have another one? There were quite a few entries, although some members did try to enter after the contest was closed to new entries. This time instead of guessing the number of members before the end of the month or next month, how about guessing when the network will hit 10,000 members? I think its a good number because its kind of a milestone. So

activerain: Where are they now? - 10/05/06 02:45 AM
I was looking back through some of the old blog posts and it occurred to me that some of the most active members 3 months ago are now MIA. Where are Sharon and Roxanne some of my most faithful blog readers? Or Tim Fennell and Linda Slocum who both held a top position on the network? Is the Active Rain love affair over so soon for some? Tell me it isn't so! -Charles
