history: JAWS at the Jersey Shore - 1916 Shark Attacks Revisited in Tuckerton - 11/07/10 05:27 AM
Get a first hand view of Jersey Shore history, as the Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve and Tuckerton Seaport host a Lunch n' Learn Program this Wednesday about the shark attacks of 1916. Those attacks changed our perception of sharks and even inspired a little movie you may have heard of...JAWS. Everyone, it seems, has seen the 1975 film JAWS. The story is said to take place in a quaint New England town called Amity Island. Replace the name Amity Island with the Jersey Shore, and the events of the movie and book are mirrored in the historical records of the Jersey

history: New Jersey History...Hollywood Style! - 09/18/10 04:56 AM
New Jersey has been a hit on TV in recent years, starting with the The Soprano's and the current glut of reality shows based in NJ. This Sunday, HBO is doing it one better with the premier of 'Boardwalk Empire'. I must point out here The Soprano's was not reality TV, like MTV's Jersey Shore, Bravo's New Jersey Housewives, or E's Jerseylicous! 'Boardwalk Empire' is directed by Martin Scorsase and is based on history and the book, Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City. The screenplay is from the Soprano's writer and producer Terrance

history: The Affair or Battle of Cedar Bridge 2009! History Alive! - 12/28/09 06:03 AM
The Affair or Battle of Cedar Bridge 2009, 227 Years Later The 2009 reenactment of the Battle of Cedar Bridge in Barnegat took place on December 27th, 227 years after it was originally fought. The weather was warm and sunny, I wonder how much different the scene at the Old Cedar Bridge Tavern really was. The original Cedar Bridge Tavern in 1782 had no porch, and the two windows to the left were part of an addition in the 1800's. The Burlington Militia stops for refreshment at the Cedar Bridge Tavern, after a fruitless search of Manahawkin for John Bacon and other

history: What's the Cost of Government Intervention? - 03/21/09 07:59 AM
With all the talk in Washington, DC and Trenton, NJ about our worsening economy, higher taxes, entitlements and government intervention, a few great quotes come to mind."In general, the art of government consists of taking as much money as possible from one party of the citizens to give to the other." Voltaire "Government is the great fiction, through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else." Frederic Bastiat, French Economist (1801-1850)While I might not agree with the politics of the author's quotes in this blog, it does show that none of what's going on today is new, nor

history: History is Alive in New Jersey! - 12/26/08 06:14 AM
Once again strong winds and swift currents prohibited re-enactors from following General George Washington’s route across the Delaware River from Pennsylvania to Trenton, NJ. For 56 years the General’s daring Christmas crossing to attack the Hessians at Trenton has been a well attended Holiday tradition. This year, as last, River conditions made it unsafe for the re-enactors from rowing across the Delaware, so they walked the bridge in Washington’s Crossing State Park. There were 130 re enactors, putting on the show for some 12,000 spectators. Today, Friday December 26th begins what’s become known as 'Patriots’ Week' in Trenton. Bus tours

Step Back In Time… On Sunday, November 9th you can meet Eleanor Roosevelt, at 2 pm at the Little Red School House Museum on Wells Mills Road. The Waretown Historical Society is presenting Rene Goodwin. She will essay the role of a famous first lady who "did her own thing" while making a huge impact on the nation during a very critical time in American history. This is a first person interpretation allowing the audience to see and hear this remarkable woman… who made her mark in a political world that had largely been
