BOOK REVIEW: (We All Need This One!): The Richest Man in Babylon - 10/25/08 11:30 PM
A friend of mine recently recommended the book: The Richest Man in Babylon, by George S. Clason I loved it. It is a compact read that addresses basic financial points in a very effective manner. Ironically, real estate agent seem to either be extremely good or extremely bad with finances. I have ridden that roller coaster myself over the years. We all have. This book offers sound simple advice - in a way that really gets through. The author distills things down to the needed fundamentals. -invest in yourself (each one of us has the right to keep/save/invest

Like a Goose! we should ALL be like the Geese! - 10/25/08 11:21 PM
Many people never realize as they are watching those gaggles of geese, how the geese support each other as they fly south for the winter. As these extraordinary animals take on this monumental feat - they set a valuable example for all of us! For instance: -the birds fly in a V formation to reduce the drag on birds flying behind the leader, saving energy and maintaing their strength - the companions take turns in the lead, sharing the burden of leadership as well as sharing the benefits of taking the back positiobns in the arrangement - they honk to give each

Teach Our Kids - YOUNG!! Understanding The Rule of 72's Will Save You Loads in the Long Run! - 10/25/08 09:05 PM
Like so many other folks - I have an ongoing LOVE/HATE Relationship with my credit cards. In the back of my mind I have always known that 'Overspending is Bad.' (I mean, which part of 'DUH' don't I understand?) When I learned the Rule of 72's, I thought, Why Didn't Someone Explain this to Me Before? The "Rule of 72" is an easy way to estimate how long an investment will take to double, with a fixed annual rate of interest. By dividing 72 by the annual rate of return, investors can get a rough estimate of how many years it will take for the initial investment to

(she got that from her mom, when I fall for a movie, I fall hard!) So, we are talking about the movie. It is loaded with Super Life Lessons, like: *Be careful what you wish for, it just might happen! Sarah never really expected the Goblin King to take her little brother, but she kept wishing for it, and alas, he did!

Autumn Comes to Olbrich Gardens - 10/18/08 11:34 PM
Ashley and I took a little time to sneak over to Olbrich Gardens. The Autumn colors are so vivid, as the gardens prepare for their winter slumber. Working with Mother Nature, the dedicated staff and volunteers continue to offer a wonderful odyssey of Nature's Glory. We decided we wanted a little bit of mother / daughter time, so one day after school, we visited the gardens. In the photo to the above left, Ashley stands next to a 'plant kaleidoscope.' The kettle dressed with foliage spins, while viewers can watch the shapes and colors tumble through two different

Fun Family Movie Review: LABYRINTH, starring David Bowie - 10/18/08 11:26 PM
Last night I introduced my daughter, Ashley, to one of my favorite old movies: Labyrinth. The movies chronicles the adventures of a teen age girl, who makes a mistake, she quickly comes to regret. In an evening of frustrated baby sitting with her little brother - the girl calls out to the Goblin King (BOWIE) to come take her brother away - RIGHT NOW! To her shock - he does just that! she immediately realizes her mistake - begs the Goblin King to return her little brother - to which her challenges her to solve his Labyrinth to win back the child. MORE HALLOWEEN FUN!! Schuster's Playtime Farm - 10/18/08 11:26 PM
What would an Autumn Season in Wisconsin be without a trip to Schuster's Playtime Farm? (conveniently located between Madison and Deerfield on Highway 12/18) Our daughter Ashley would stay there forever. She never wants to leave. First she runs to the kitten house - the Catty Shack, to look for new friends. She feeds the goats, the sheep, the pigs, the chickens. She plays all over the farm, sees old friends, makes new friends. We munched on treats from the concession stand (staffed by the Oregon Band). We took a hayride out to the pumpkin patch and selected

Unleash Your Personal Productivity: Read this Handy Little Book! - 10/11/08 11:56 PM
Price Pritchard's You-Squared offers a challenging shift in the paradigm of personal productivity. His premise, that you can move to exponential growth in your personal productivity, is a challenge worth taking. He lays out his observation from quantum physics, that sometimes atomic particles 'just jump,' for no apparetn reason. These jumps are called quantum leaps. I found his idea, that I can make a quantum leap in life, very compelling. He makes several challenges: *quit trying harder - he opens by sharing the drama of a fly attempting to fly through a clear glass window. The fly fails to

Iron Jawed Angels - voting - movie review - 10/11/08 11:34 PM
It has been a while since I watched the movie, Iron Jawed Angels. It is a riveting and highly entertaining film. With the upcoming election and another one of Ashley's "Jumps in Maturity," we watched it together. The film chronicles the events leading up to the passage of the nineteenth amendment to the US Constitution, recognizing the right of women to vote in this country. Produced by HBO, the movie boasts a strong cast, including: Hilary Swank, Frances O'Connor, Julia Ormond, Angelica Huston, Patrick Dempsey and Robert Gunton (as a movie buff, I found the casting to be
