Who knew there were so many options to create a beautiful and functional living wall? Even one you can nibble from. Check out these 9 gorgeous and versatile vertical garden ideas from houselogic.com that’ll put a whole new slant on how you grow flowers, herbs, and veggies.

1-Gardening on vertical walls takes the right kind of container. Flexible, waterproof pockets hold soil and moisture for plant growth, but protect siding from stains and water damage. Need to water? Simply lean out your window with a short hose or watering can.

2-In a community garden, each family has only so much room. You’ll max out your allotment by growing upwards. Metals stakes support tiers of growing pouches for herbs and veggies — a good arrangement for little helpers and gardeners with limited mobility. A 5-pocket pouch holds 2 cubic feet of soil and costs $150.

3-Space is precious in the concrete jungle. Citified gardeners can get their green on by going up — not out. This trellis wall features an embedded growing medium that encourages root growth and holds moisture for ivies and other climbers. Ferns in a planter box create a lush foundation.

4-With its planter box on wheels and a built-in trellis, this living divider wall ($90-$250) scoots around your house to block views of your laundry room or that mess in your home office. Vining plants are ideal for scaling the trellis; flowering vines add a splash of color.

5-Bring your garden into your kitchen. This DIY hydroponic wall system features an inorganic mat sandwiched between waterproof PVC panels. Plants grow in slits in the PVC, and a pipe at the top supplies water and nutrients. A skylight or grow lights will keep indoor herbs happy.

6-Living walls include a growing base — an inorganic, waterproof mat that won’t rot. To plant, you cut a hole in the mat and insert the roots; plants quickly develop a root structure that holds them in place. Water and nutrients flow from above; a gutter catches water at the bottom of the mat and a pump recirculates it.

7-Half fence, half garden, this leafy privacy screen is a cornucopia of smaller plants grown in a series of planter boxes made from water-resistant cypress. You won’t want to seal the boxes — let them drain — and use shallow-rooted plants, such as creeping Jenny, sweet alyssum, and herbs.

8-Living wall systems are getting smarter; this system includes a lightweight wall embedded with nutrients that feed plants. The system is hydroponic — no soils are needed, and an automatic watering system provides the right amount of moisture. A smaller (7-by-5-foot) custom indoor wall with grow lights runs $10,000-$15,000.

9-If you’re looking to grow a few herbs or veggies but don’t want a full-on garden, a simple plastic shoe organizer ($20) lets you stock up on fresh greens while saving space — and cash. Without drain holes, the soil may tend to stay moist, so watch out for overwatering.

Water heaters are non-issues UNTIL you get hit with that first icy shower or giant puddle in the basement. Then you have to think fast: Repair or replace? Our friends at www.houselogic.com walks us through the options of replacing vs. repairing.

If it’s a conventional storage-tank water heater nearing the end of its 10-13-year life, replacement is obvious: New models are up to 20% more efficient and can save up to $700 in energy costs over the life of the unit. However, if your water heater is only a few years old, repair may be the way to go. Not sure whether to repair or replace? Here’s how to decide.

How to diagnose water heater woes

Conventional water heaters are simple. Cold water enters the tank and is heated by an electric element or gas burner. A thermostat regulates the temperature, usually 120 to 140 degrees. As the water heats, pressure builds inside the tank. When you turn on a tap, pressure sends hot water out the faucet.

Because water heaters contain few moving parts, only a few things can go wrong.

Pilot light on gas water heater flickers out.

Circuit breaker for an electric heater trips.

Burner or heating element fails.

Thermostat breaks.

Valve sticks.

Repairing or replacing any of those parts is relatively inexpensive: A plumber can do the job for $150 to $300.

But if the tank is more than 10 years old, or if it’s leaking, a new water tank likely is in your future.

When replacement is your only choice

Over time, water minerals react with steel, corroding water heater tanks. When water heaters spring a leak, repair isn’t an option.

On the bright side, modern water heaters are far more energy-efficient than older models. Manufacturers now inject foam insulation between the tank and its outer shell, resulting in higher heat retention. New glass liners make tanks less prone to corrosion.

You’ll pay $500 to $1,500 to purchase and install a new conventional storage unit. A high-efficiency model that meets Energy Star standards saves up to 20% in energy costs.

Tankless, heat pump, and solar water heaters offer even bigger savings and also qualify for federal tax credits. Some credits expire at the end of 2011 but others run to 2016. These products cost three to five times more to buy and install, so consider payback carefully.

Factor in hidden costs of water heaters

Even with conventional water heaters, replacement might not be as simple as hauling out the old and hooking up the new. Many local building codes now require you to upgrade the following:

Water heater mount

Size or type of venting system

Drain pan underneath the heater

Supply pipes

Before starting work, ask your installer to outline all costs.

If you know your way around plumbing tasks, you may be able to install the new unit yourself. Most manufacturers provide detailed instructions, and you’ll need to check your local building codes. Turn off the water and gas or electric before you begin, and take particular care to vent gas models properly.

Maintain your water heater

Whether you repair or replace, water heaters will perform better and last longer if you flush the tank once a year to remove sediment. A bonus: Without all that gunk inside, your water heater will operate more efficiently, saving you money.

Also, check the anode rod—sometimes called the sacrificial rod—every three years. An aluminum or magnesium probe inside the tank, it collects corrosive elements and should be replaced when caked or eaten away. A new one costs about $30.

Stay on top of these simple maintenance tasks and you can avoid thinking about water heaters again for a long time.

In the most recent National Association of Realtors Magazine, they highlighted a few low-cost options for sprucing up your kitchen.

Here are a few of my favorites:

-Paint: The least expensive way to change the feel of a room. Use eggshell rather than flat paint since the kitchen is a heavily used room.

-Backsplash Tile: Do it from the base of the cabinets down. A full 18 inches. Try laying them vertically rather than horizontally for a less-expected look.

-Countertops: If granite is too expensive, choose a laminate. A texture laminate is a better choice to hide scratching or burn marks.

-Appliances: Going with the classic stainless steel appeals universally. If you can’t afford to replace all of your appliances focus on the refrigerator.

-Flooring: Replacing smaller tiles with a larger tiles makes the room seem larger and is easier to clean and maintain.

Simple Solutions to Decluttering your Home

In a post I did last September I discussed the importance of eliminating clutter in your home before putting it on the market. This topic is so relevant, especially if you are considering listing your home in the hot real estate market we have been experiencing this spring. We all live with some level of clutter whether we’re a candidate for the show Hoarders or our otherwise neat house has a junk drawer.Go through every room, every cabinet, every closet and identify things you don’t need and get rid of them ASAP (sell, donate, trash). And, the stuff you want to keep but don’t use often, pack up and store in the basement, garage, or even better-- a storage unit or friend’s house. I’m talking collections, books, off-season clothing, toys, holiday decorations, dishes, etc. Homes devoid of clutter look bigger and give the appearance of ample storage (a huge bonus for buyers).

1-Double-Duty Furniture: Use furniture that can double as storage. Many ottomans today have a storage area that is perfect for hiding toys, blankets, books, etc.

2-Organized Drawers: Use adjustable dividers to keep items easily accessible and the drawer uncluttered.

3-Mount Wall Brackets: Wall brackets can bring order to a large collection or odd shapes. Be sure not to over accessorize these brackets. Keep it Simple!

4-Utilize Window Space: While you don't want to block too much natural light, small open window shelves will actually illuminate collections.

5-Stylish Seating with Storage: Bench sitting with storage in a kitchen is great for bigger items such as: food processors, mixers, waffle irons, etc.

It's that time of the year again. Spring is here! Warm weather means flowers, green grass — and weeds that’ll turn your yard into a turf war. Your first line of defense? Maintain a healthy lawn with proper watering, feeding, and aeration. After that, know the bad guys that try to take over your territory. Here’s your guide from www.houselogic.com to identifying some of the most common lawn weeds in North America, and how best to get rid of them.

Here are the 4 of the most common weeds and how to get rid of them:

1: False Dandelion-Similar to good-old dandelions, it changes up the color scheme, white petals and a yellow center.

Fix? Dig it out with a garden fork.

2: Purslane-A low-growing, drought tolerant weed that forms dense mats. It flourishes in very warm soils.

Fix? Mulch to suppress; pull by hand.

3: Nutsedge-One of the most invasive weeds. It grows from underground tubers, so getting rid of it is a pain.

Fix? Dig it up, remove tubers, drench areas with 1/2 cup of molasses in 1 gallon of water.

4: Chickweed-A low growing weed that likes moist and shaded conditions. In lawns it forms dense mats with small symmetrically placed leaves on stems.

Fix? Pull by hand or dig up shallow root.

Paying Taxes May Stink, but Owning a Home Helps!

Tax day is tomorrow!! Have you filed your 2011 return yet? For some, it's the most dreaded day of the year. There is some good news though for all of you homeowners out there. Here are some last-minute considerations as it relates to the deductions/tax credits for your home.

1-Have you replaced any major items in your home? The 2011 federal energy tax credits offer a $500.00 tax credit for various upgrades. Windows, roofs, water heaters, storm windows/doors, and insulation are just a few on the list that qualify. The tax credit may seem small, however, credits are better than a deduction and every little bit helps in the overall picture.

2-Do you work from home? More and more people today are working from home and are missing out on several items that could be deducted. Anything from your home phone to the space that you use for your office may be deductible.

3-The best part of owning a home at tax time is being able to deduct your Mortgage Interest. Typically your first mortgage isn't the only interest you can deduct. Many times you can deduct the interest off your Home Equity Loan or Line of Credit (HELOC.)

4-Have you ever considered "Greening up your Home??" There are several generous tax credits for installing solar panels, geothermal heat pumps, and small wind energy systems. The initial investment could be high, but the overall long-term savings on your energy costs might be worth it.
