Cherokee Indian Legend of The Cedar Tree - 02/18/10 06:19 AM
The Cherokee Indian Legend of The Cedar Tree A long time ago when the Cherokee people were new upon the earth, they thought that life would be much better if there was never any night. They beseeched the Ouga (Creator) that it might be day all the time and that there would be no darkness.
The Creator heard their voices and made the night cease and it was day all the time. Soon, the forest was thick with heavy growth. It became difficult to walk and to find the path. The people toiled in the gardens many long hours trying … (5 comments)

Honoring President's Day... with some first facts - 02/15/10 06:34 AM
Once in the White House, each President made his mark in different ways. In fact, before Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President, came to office, the White House wasn't even called the White House! People called the building the President's Palace, President's House, and the Executive Mansion. Roosevelt officially named it the White House in 1901. Theodore Roosevelt wasn't the only President to invent a new expression. Martin Van Buren, the eighth President, is sometimes credited with creating the word "OK." Van Buren was from Kinderhook, New York. During his campaign, Old Kinderhook (O.K.) clubs formed to support the President. Later, "OK" … (12 comments)

Vintage Valentine's Day Cards - 02/12/10 06:30 AM
During the late 1800s, postage rates around the world dropped, and the obscene St. Valentine's Day card became popular, despite the Victorian era being otherwise very prudish. As the numbers of racy valentines grew, several countries banned the practice of exchanging Valentine's Day cards. During this period, Chicago's post office rejected more than 25,000 cards on the grounds that they were so indecent, they were not fit to be carried through the U.S. mail. In Victorian times it was considered bad luck to sign a Valentine's Day card. Here are a few not-too racy Valentine’s Day cards from the past…

Antica Roma Caffé has just opened in Murphy, NC. Yes, it’s like a little piece of Italy in downtown Murphy now. Of course we had such a hard time picking just one of the delicious desserts that we had to take home three! Don’t worry – we’ll try not eat them all tonight.

They just had their official ribbon … (6 comments)

Nantahala National Forest - Tsali Recreation Area in Western NC - 02/04/10 09:05 PM
Nantahala National Forest - Tsali Recreation Area in NC
Tsali, an internationally renowned mountain biking facility, derives its name from a Cherokee hero martyred in connection with the infamous Trail of Tears, when thousands of Cherokee were rounded up for forced removal to Oklahoma. The historical record is impossibly murky, but Tsali and some members of his family were apparently executed by their own people, perhaps to placate military authorities, in the aftermath of a scuffle in which one or more U.S. soldiers were killed. Some accounts say Tsali willingly sacrificed his life so that some of his countrymen could remain … (2 comments)
