On the second Friday night of each month the streets of downtown Wake Forest come alive with food, merchants and music! Sunflower Studio & Gallery Art After Hours Opening Reception

The Sunflower guest gallery will feature the series "Textured Mediations" by painter Cheryl McCardle and a sculpture collection by Victoria Bradley. McCardle's latest series "Textured Mediation" are works on canvas that incorporate heavy layers of paint and mixed media to give a sculptural feel to the works. Bradley sculpts bas-reliefs and free-standing realistic works in clay and casts limited editions in monzini. The exhibit continues every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday through August 8 between the hours of 11 am and 5 pm. "Mister Felix" will provide music during Art After Hours. Canoe or Kayak for Water Quality
Saturday, July 11; 9 am - Noon
Wake Forest Reservoir Boat Ramp off of Wait Ave.
Join the Town of Wake Forest for water quality testing at the Wake Forest Reservoir. Bring your own canoe or kayak or borrow one from the Town (we only have 20 available so register today if you want to borrow a boat). We will meet at the boat ramp, have a land-based water quality education session and then paddle up the reservoir and test various parameters to determine water quality. We will test for nitrogen, phosphorous, turbidity, pH and temperature. We will also be able to use new equipment purchased through a 319 grant, including a GPS unit that can measure area, a YSI multi-parameter meter, a turbidity meter and hand-held pH and TDS meters. This activity is free and open to the public, but reservations must be made for borrowed boats by calling or emailing Holly Spring at (919) 554-3158 or hspring@wakeforestnc.gov. Each participant will be required to sign a waiver form that will be emailed prior to the event. The event lasts approx. 3 hours. Click here for directions to the water reservior.

BASF Smile Train Triathlon

Heritage Swim Club, Heritage Lakes Drive in Heritage Wake Forest
Join the 2nd running of The Smile Train Triathlon through Heritage Wake Forest on June 29. This is a sprint-distance triathlon comprised of a 250 yard swim at the Heritage Swim Club, a 12 mile bike followed by a 3.1 mile run. 100% of the registration dollars for this race will go directly to The Smile Train, a cleft-lip and cleft-palate charity that provides life changing surgery for children who would under no condition be able to afford the corrective surgery. Real Estate Sign Laws MAY Get Relaxed in Cary, NC

For those of you that are not familiar with the Raleigh area let me just say that we have VERY strict sign laws. You are only allowed a certain number of signs per property, strict requirements on directional signs and Open House signs are also heavily monitored.

If you do not follow the sign laws you can get fined - I know, it happened to me over 2 years ago.

Here is an article that came out today regarding the possible modification of sign requirements/laws. You can be sure that I will be following this closely!

Real estate agents ask Cary to relax open house rules

Cary, N.C. - Real estate broker Brenda Carroll has a new listing in Cary that she is trying to sell, but a Town of Cary ordinance is making her job tougher, she said.

She would like the town to relax its rules regarding open houses and open house signs. Town leaders said they are open to exploring the possibilities, and they have asked staff to review the ordinance.

Cary allows two open houses per house, per year. Carroll said she would like that cap lifted. Also, real estate agents and homeowners can put up no more than three directional signs to point prospective buyers to an open house. That can be tough in a large subdivision, Carroll said.

"What if you have a home that needs four (signs)? Are you supposed to break Town of Cary laws by putting up the fourth? Or are you supposed to not have an open house?" she said.

Town rules also state that open house signs can only be displayed on Saturday and Sundays. Real estate agent Rich Murray said he would like to see them allowed on Fridays.

"Then it allows more exposure. So as people come home on a Friday evening, or if they're out running errands, it gives them that exposure," he said.

If agents put up too many open house signs, Cary staff takes them down. The agents could also face fines.

Cary council member Julie Robinson said the real estate agents' concerns are valid.

"I think it's a very fair question in an economy like this," she said.

The rule's intent, according to Robinson, is to reduce sign clutter. The council is asking staff to come up with some alternatives. Their ideas will be presented in the next couple months.

"We're open to looking at things, you know. Every once in a while, policies need to be amended and adopted," Robinson said.

Current market data shows Cary homes sell the fastest in the Triangle with an average of 55 days on the market. Raleigh houses take around 80 days to sell. Homes in Durham take more than 100 days, on average.

Cary business owners complained to the town in May about sign restrictions placed on them as well.

Wake Forest NC - Forgotten Pond - A Little Fishin' and Playin'!

The Finley's discovered a great little hidden pond yesterday afternoon. I am almost embarrassed to say it is only 1/4 mile from our home. We took Tug for a walk yesterday and met quite a few new friends while there! Liam met some new friends and joined in fishing, Tug enjoyed the lake and Jon and I enjoyed the scenery!

Forgotten Pond is located within Heritage in Wake Forest NC. They have several pavillions with benches making afternoon picnics wonderful! Benches line the pond, there is a turtle observation deck and a wonderful pier for fishing! Check out our afternoon - it was peaceful,fun and definately worth a return trip!

Real Estate and Money... Beware of Neighbor's Home Foreclosure By BOB TEDESCHI The New York Times Published: June 12, 2009 When it comes to selling your house or planning your next home equity line of credit, being a nosey neighbor could very well pay off.
That's one implication of a recent report from the Center for Responsible Lending, a consumer advocacy group based in Durham, N.C.
The report, which was released in May, focuses on the ripple effects of home foreclosures, and suggests that homeowners who are concerned about their home's value should watch for signs of trouble among their closest neighbors.
This year alone, it says, foreclosures will cause an estimated 69.5 million nearby homes to suffer price declines averaging $7,200 per home. The loss in property value could total $500 billion.

News You Can Use Penetrating the Maze of Mortgage Relief

Since President Obama unveiled a mortgage modification program in March to help people who are at risk of losing their homes, housing counselors in the New York area have fielded hundreds of calls along the lines of: "How do I get one of those 2 percent mortgages?" The answer has often been, "Well, it's not that simple."
Housing advocates who work with homeowners in foreclosure or on the verge of it say that while the loan modification program could help thousands of New Yorkers, it has been slow to get off the ground and a majority of people who have applied for help have yet to hear whether they will receive it.
One thing is clear: Homeowners who have a HUD-approved housing counselor championing their cause are more likely to get a modification than those who try it on their own. Housing counselors say they often understand the program's guidelines better than the people answering phones for lenders, so they know how to pursue a case aggressively.

Every Saturday we are graced with a WONDERFUL Farmer's Market full of fresh fruits and vegetables, homemade jams and jellies and local crafts in Historic Downtown Wake Forest! It is a fantastic time to get out, enjoy the weather and a cup of delicious coffee from the Wake Forest Coffee Company!

This Saturday, June 13, Get Up and Go in conjuction with the Wake Forest Downtown Reviltalization Corporation will host a Farmer's Market Walk! The group will meet up at the Wake Forest Public Library at 10:15am for a leisurely stroll to the Farmer's Market. Be sure to take totes or a backpack so you have a place to carry all of the goodies that you pick up at the Farmer's Market and from other local merchants along the way!

Get Up and Go was started as a way to showcase local events and places to visit by encouraging people to "get out" and walk! What a fantastic idea! Wake Forest NC is loaded with local history and sites to see!

The art on display is the work of students age 6 - 22! Ms. Burrell has the students focus on the fundamentals of drawing and painting during weekly lessons. All art on display will be available for purchase.

In addition to the beautiful works of art on display The Possum Road Bluegrass Band will perform on the front porch. The Possum Road Bluegrass Band has been together since 2006 and is a wonderful mix of Bluegrass with a little Celtic and country mixed in! It is sure to be a great time for all ages!

Canoe or Kayak for Water Quality

Wake Forest Reservoir Boat Ramp off of Wait Ave.
Join the Town of Wake Forest for water quality testing at the Wake Forest Reservoir. Bring your own canoe or kayak or borrow one from the Town (we only have 20 available so register today if you want to borrow a boat). We will meet at the boat ramp, have a land-based water quality education session and then paddle up the reservoir and test various parameters to determine water quality. We will test for nitrogen, phosphorous, turbidity, pH and temperature. We will also be able to use new equipment purchased through a 319 grant, including a GPS unit that can measure area, a YSI multi-parameter meter, a turbidity meter and hand-held pH and TDS meters.

A session will also be held July 11. This activity is free and open to the public, but reservations must be made for borrowed boats by calling or emailing Holly Spring at (919) 554-3158 or hspring@wakeforestnc.gov. Each participant will be required to sign a waiver form that will be emailed prior to the event. The event lasts approx. 3 hours.

Historic Wake Forest Cemetery Walking Tour

Wake Forest Cemetery, North White St.
Nothing provokes memories of times past and those who preceded us quite like a stroll through the town cemetery - circa 1837. As you walk around the grounds, you will learn about Wake Forest and her people. Veterans of wars, professors and college presidents, teachers and preachers, athletes and aesthetes, writers and poets, young and old, all from the families who established the town and determined its culture and destiny. For more information about the cemetery tour, contact Myra Parker at (919) 556-3326. This is a free event sponsored by the Town of Wake Forest and the Cemetery Advisory Board. Overflow parking will be at the WEB DuBois Center lot beside the new CVS at the corner of North White St. & Highway 98. (Rain date is May 16.)

Pancake & Sausage Breakfast

American Legion Hall, 225 E. Holding Ave., Wake Forest
American Legion Post 187 will hold a pancake and sausage breakfast on the second Sunday of each month at the Legion Hall, across from the Wake Forest Post Office. All-you-can-eat pancakes, sausage, orange juice and choice of hot beverage for only $5 per person/$20 max per family. Proceeds support community and veterans projects. Six Sundays in Spring Concert Series featuring ZEGG

Holding Park, 133 W. Owen Ave.
Get movin' with ZEGG (Zero Excuses, Get Groovin') during this free concert! The five-person group blends jazz, rock, bluegrass and funk and features soaring four-part harmonies! In case of rain, the concert will be held at Festival Park. While we welcome you to bring a picnic basket, lawn chair and leashed pet, alcoholic beverages are prohibited.
