Firing Range Training

Police Department Firing Range, behind Flaherty Park Community Center
Residents in the area are advised that the Wake Forest Police Department will conduct firing range training at the police department firing range, located behind the Flaherty Park Community Center. The firing range is utilized by Wake Forest Police officers who require instruction and practice in order to obtain current certification in the use of firearms. Library Teen Knitting Program

The Wake Forest Library is hosting a Teens Drop-n Knitting program for youth 12-18 years old. The group meets on two Mondays each month at the Wake Forest Library. The program is open to experienced knitters and those who are interested in learning to knit. Bring your own projects or help us make blankets for charity. Drop by anytime between 4 pm and 6 pm. Purple Heart Dinner

Wake Forest will honor the community's Purple Heart recipients on Veterans Day with a special Purple Heart Dinner. The public is invited to attend. The Wake Forest United Methodist Church Men 2009 Fall Fish Fry offers $8 plates that include flounder, slaw, boiled potatoes, and hushpuppies. This event raises money for the men to build handicap access ramps at little or no cost to those in need. "War Bonds" at Louisburg College

Louisburg College's Allen de Hart Concert Series will present "War Bonds: The Songs and Letters of World War II" in the Frances Boyette Dickson Auditorium. This multi-media living history cabaret is interspersed with personal letters from the Front and headline news of the period. David zum Brunnen and Serena Ebhardt fill the stage with wartime memories and tunes. Actual veterans' stories create a sentimental journey back to the days when blackouts and rationing were a small sacrifice in order to obtain freedom. Regional Premiere of Mark Hayes' Gloria

The Northeast Piedmont Chorale will present the regional premiere of Mark Hayes' Gloria, a dramatic presentation of the Christmas story, from the announcement of Jesus' birth to the affirmation of His divinity. Mark Hayes is an internationally known composer whose vocal and instrumental writing is widely acclaimed and performed throughout the nation. In addition to Gloria, the Chorale will sing a mix of seasonal favorites, including "Once in Royal David's City," John Rutter's "Candlelight Carol," Clark and McCullough's "Once in Bethlehem," "Angels We Have Heard on High," "Glory to the Newborn King," and "A Christmas Suite" of traditional carols. The Chorale will be joined by members of the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary Choir. The concert is free and open to the public. Additional concerts will be held Nov. 22 at Adamsville Baptist Church in Goldsboro and Dec. 5 at Binkley Chapel on the campus of the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Quick Tip To Share - VODKA, It's Not Just a Drink Anymore! It's GREEN, Who Knew?!

Okay - Ya'll know that I have been randomly posting Quick Tips that you can use around the house that are "GREEN". Well, on one of my previous posts I had a comment from a reader that suggested ketchup and some of it's useful properties......don't worry that post is coming! (BTW, Thanks Alicia).

As I was reading up on some of the uses of ketchup I ran across 10 Surprising Uses for Vodka - god help me, I can only imagine the comments coming up on this one! While I personally like MY vodka with Tonic (not the band) and double lime here are some interesting alternative uses for vodka:

Treat Poison Ivy - Pour vodka on the exposed area immediately and it will wash away the dreaded itchy that usually soon to follow
Kill Odor Causing Bacteria - If you are in a smoke filled bar don't get too upset if someone spills a vodka drink on you. Apparently if you spritz vodka on clothes and let them hang dry they won't retain nasty odors and will smell fresh.
Shine Chrome, Glass and Porcelain - Moisten a cloth with vodka and "polish" away!
Keep Flowers Fresh Longer - add a few drops of vodka and a teaspoon of vodka to the water in your flower vase - flowers will stay fresh longer!
Insect Repellent - This one kind of cracks me up (like the others haven't). Put some vodka in a spray bottle and spray the bugs or yourself. You might repel more than bugs but your clothes will smell fresh (see #3)
Disinfect and Alleviate Jellyfish Stings - Again, have vodka in a spray bottle and spray on affected areas.
Shinier, Healthier Hair - Add a jigger of vodka to a 12 oz. bottle of shampoo
Get Rid of Mold - Still have that handy spray bottle full of vodka? You still with me? Spray on mold and let sit for 15 mins - scrub away.
Natural Aches and Pains Remedy - DUH! But the official recipe is:
- Fill a clean glass jar with fresh lavender flower then top off with vodka. Seal the lid tightly and place in the sun for three days. (Same as making Sun Tea) Strain the resulting liquid through a coffee filter and poof! You have a homemade tincture to rub into aches and pains. You can pour into smaller bottles, decorate and give them away as unique gifts. (Taken from The Daily Green)
Relieve a Toothache - Swoosh Vodka around the affected tooth and it should help to numb it.

Have at it my fellow comedians - the floor is yours! Me? I am off to the Liquor store so I can ALWAYS keep a spray bottle full of vodka around the house and in my beach bag!

Wake Forest NC - All You Can Eat Sausage and Pancake Breakfast - Nov. 8, 2009

The second Sunday of every month the American Legion Post 187 hosts an All You Can Eat Sausage and Pancake Breakfast. You'll find Sausage, Pancakes, Orange Juice and a Hot Beverage for $5 per person or $20/max per family. The proceeds from the breakfast will support community and veteran projects.

The breakfast will be served from 8am - 1pm this Sunday, November 8.

Wake Forest NC - Town Advisory Boards Accepting Applications!

It is that time! The Wake Forest NC Town Advisory Boards are accepting applications for vacant seats! This is a wonderful opportunity for Wake Forest NC residents to help shape, guide and support Wake Forest NC!

The local boards were established to give residents input in to what happens in Wake Forest NC and to advise the Board of Commissioners on matters that affect the town and it's residents.

Applications are being accepted through November 18, 2009 for vacant seats. Each of the following Boards has 3 seats available unless where noted:

Cemetary
Greenway
Historic Preservation
Human Relations
Planning
Recreation
Senior Center
Urban Forestry
Board of Adjustment (Only 1 seat open)

To apply for any of the vacant seats you MUST be a resident of Wake Forest NC or the ETJ (extra-territorial jurisdiction). All of the above vacancies are set to expire on December 31, 2009.

Interviews of applicants will be held on December 1, 2009 and the appointments will be announced on December 15, 2009 during the regular Board of Commissioners meeting. The new term for the seats will begin in Jannuary, 2010. All of the volunteers that will have been selected will serve a term of 3 years.

Wake Forest NC - Local Market Update November 2009 - Numbers Don't Lie

The latest Housing Statistics and Market Report are available for Wake Forest NC and I thought it would be an ideal time to share them with you! I have a few graphs to show where we are now in 2009 and where we have come from. The most interesting graph, which I consider a BENCHMARK, is eye-opening, to say the least, to Home Sellers in the Wake Forest NC area.

First up is the graph depicting the New Residential Listings in Wake Forest NC for 2008 vs. 2009. There has been a 30% decrease in the number of Home Listings in Wake Forest NC overall. In many instances that could be a very good thing for home sellers in Wake Forest NC - much less competition in the market!

The next graph illustrates the Year To Date for Closings in Wake Forest NC. Again, we see a decline. A 30.5% decline to be precise. While the decrease in Closed Sales in Wake Forest NC could quite possibly be tandem with New Listings in Wake Forest NC I happen to think...........

the next graph is the most telling...... The Median Sales Price in Wake Forest NC has declined 13.6%. That is a significant decline. We are NOT in a market of 2005 - the real estate market has changed! Home Prices in Wake Forest NC are reflecting a trend to a more sustainable level. More thoughts after the graph.....

So many times I, personally, have been face to face with a Home Seller in Wake Forest NC and have had to review comparables with them. More often then not they are disheartened. Numbers don't lie. While there may be a personal attachment to the home, precious memories, et cetera, it just isn't going to make your home worth any more than your neighbors down the street. And for Pete's sake, please stop watching HGTV - Granite Countertops will NEVER net you what they show you on TV.

In today's market, 2009 (soon to be 2010) you have to be aggressive with pricing! It may not be what you want to hear but if you want to sell that house it's realistic!

Wake County Affordable Housing Project: Wake Forest Design Workshop
Saturday, Nov. 7; 10 am - 3 pm
Wake Forest Town Hall, 401 Elm Ave.
The Wake County Affordable Housing and Design Project is a research and design project conducted by the faculty and graduate students from the School of Architecture at NC State University. The project will include research on housing needs in Wake County, national and international best practices of affordable housing, and the design of a range of affordable housing models. Issues such as environmental, social and cultural sustainability will be intrinsic to the project. Mixed-use, mixed-income, and transit-oriented development will also be incorporated. The project will include a number of design workshops conducted at designated plot study towns. The Wake Forest Design Workshop is scheduled for Saturday, November 7. Through interactive discussion and design exercises, important perspectives and information will be gathered that will guide the subsequent design and research of the project. Lunch will be provided.

Wake Forest Library 13th Birthday Party

The Friends of the Wake County Library will sponsor and host this annual celebration of the Wake Forest Community Library's birthday. Flow Circus Variety Arts will perform a program for the family entitled "Read Yourself Silly." Paul Miller of Flow Circus will tell the story of how a trip to the circus inspired him to visit the library. The program will include juggling, magic, and balloon sculpting. The winning ticket for the Friends of the Library raffle of an autographed copy of "Connections...100 Years of Wake Forest History" will be drawn, followed by birthday cake. Pancake & Sausage Breakfast

Quick Tip To Share - Wonderful Uses for Lemon Juice and They're GREEN!

Lemon juice can be used for so many different situations around the home! Because of lemons acidity they are perfect for some tough cleaning jobs and are somewhat antiseptic and antibacterial. Here are some great ideas for using lemon juice around the house:

If you have light colored countertops and they become stained with kool-aid, wine, food stains, etc just pour a little lemon juice on the stain and let stand for a few minutes. After only a few minutes sprinkle some baking soda on the spot and scrub - the stain will disappear. **I have personally tried this on a home I had listed that had a small cigarette burn/stain on a counter and IT WORKED! Now, it wasn't a deep and nasty stain but a stubborn one nonetheless.
Use a fresh cut lemon to clean your copper pots and copper fixtures! Just cut a lemon into wedges or halves and rub over the copper - it removes spots FAST!
Add some lemon juice to vinegar and place in a spray bottle - you have a fantastic everyday cleaner!
GARBAGE DISPOSALS! I am ALWAYS throwing lemons down my garbage disposal! Not only does the juice of the lemon help deoderize the disposal bit the rinds help to sharpen the blades.

Wow - the temps sure did take a dip in Wake Forest NC this past week! I wimped and turned the heat on and put the flannels on the bed!

The Wake Forest Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting a candidate forum for the Town Board of Commissioners candidates on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Wake Forest Town Hall. All candidates will be asked the same questions and have an opportunity to respond. Each candidate will also be given the opportunity to make concluding remarks. The Town Board elections will be held on Nov. 3, 2009. The forum is free and open to the general public to attend. Quick Tip To Share - Microwave Cleaner and It's GREEN!

I don't know about you but no matter how hard I try I always get spatters in my microwave or something blows up in my microwave. Hhmmm, Liam learned that it's really cool to put a marshmallow in the microwave to watch it expand - besides, he wanted smores! Well, the marshmallow expanded alright - it exploded! YUCK!

Here is a great GREEN way to get those messes out of your microwave - I tried it - IT WORKS!

2 cup measuring cup or large enough bowl AND
spray bottle
1 cup water
1/2 cup vinegar

First, I put the water and vinegar mixture in a spray bottle. Spray the interior of the microwave liberally, let stand for a few moments and then wipe. To get to the spaghetti sauce stains (you know you have them!) put the rest of the water/vinegar mixture in the bowl. "Cook" the mixture in the microwave for 3 minutes - to boiling. When the cook time has expired let the bowl stand in the microwave for about 10-15 minutes. Do NOT open the door. After the time is up all "loose" food will have come loose and can be easily wiped off. Stains will also magically disappear!

For a quick freshener in the microwave you can also heat up a bowl of water with sliced lemons in it - removes nasty odors!

Lastly, to prevent the "EXPLODING MARSHMALLOW" trick - do not let you 9 year old near the microwave!! :)

If you are looking for a great air freshener/fragrance don't run to the store and buy it - MAKE IT! There are quite a few recipes on line and tips as well. I wanted to share one that my mother gave to me and it is WONDERFUL! Thanks Mom! Love you - I'll call soon!

Stove Top Potpourri

1 orange, sliced

1 lemon, sliced

2 cinnamon sticks broken up

15-20 cloves

Place all ingredients in a simmer pot and gently simmer. Never leave a simmer pot unattended and check periodically for the water level to be sure that the ingredients are not drying out.

My mom had bought me the cutest simmer pot for Christmas a few years ago that was from Claire Burke and it came with a bottle of simmering oil. While I absolutely adore Claire Burke products I found the natural potpourri recipe that my mom attached even better! I hope you enjoy as well!

In addition to my recipe there are many other things that you can do.

You can hang herbs to dry with attractive ribbons attached.
Place a tiny amount of essential oil such as lavender or bergamot or even vanilla extract on cotton balls and place them around your home (be sure to avoid fabrics!)
Slice up some fruit and BAKE it! (Only at 170 degrees though and for SHORT periods of time such as 1-2 hours and BE SURE to turn the fruit over every now and then)

There are so many options to making a home smell good WITHOUT spending the money on chemicals! Be good to our planet - it's the only one we have.
