It's worse than the age old 'chicken or the egg' argument...since it affects how people perceive their biggest financial investment-their homes.
Which is correct-market value or tax value?
Doesn't sound like a difficult question when I write it down, but it's an ongoing discussion with homeowners in Charlotte NC (and especially in Cabarrus County-Concord, Kannapolis, Harrisburg, in light of the recent property tax revaluation). Seems that in some parts of the country, tax values have some semblance of relation to market values.

Hurts, doesn't it? I got my love letter from the Cabarrus County Tax Assessor today as well.
Folks who live in Concord, Harrisburg, Kannapolis, Mount Pleasant, and Midland NC are feeling the pinch tonight. You see, in North Carolina, very often our tax values lag market values. It's the natural side effect of the amount of new construction in the area-the tax office can barely keep up with new builds, much less resale homes!

I know, from watching my Google alerts for Concord NC, that the story of Bruton Smith and Lowe's Motor Speedway and Concord and the battles therein has swept the nation. (Granted, you might have ignored it if you don't follow NASCAR.)
Bruton, he of the multi-bazillion dollars, finally announced that he'll leave the Speedway in Concord. AFTER squeezing $80 million in concessions out of Concord.
Yes, I too believe that this should come directly out of the pockets of the city officials who were stupid enough to tell Bruton what he can and can't do with his Speedway land. But that's neither here … (7 comments)

We have a small, local casualty of the drama in the housing market. Merritt Homes is ceasing operations in their two communities in the Charlotte NC area.
One community is Moss Creek, which is a master-planned community in Concord NC. Any builders or investors out there who might have an interest in completing these three homes, please contact me as soon as possible

The saga continues. Bruton Smith vs Concord NC. If only we were in Vegas, this would be a match for the ages! (And just imagine what it would bring in on pay-per-view).
The latest twist is that Concord is proposing an ego-stroking manuever to save the Speedway and keep it here in Concord. They want to rename Speedway Boulevard, Bruton Smith Boulevard. It's a lovely gesture, and we all know that Bruton does indeed think highly of himself (heck, who wouldn't? a self-made multi-billionaire? go after it, Mr Smith!)
I have a better idea!

Seriously, don't mess with Bruton Smith. I know that he's being a bit ridiculous and over the top and is behaving like a very pouty kid who's ready to take his marbles and go home...but that's irrelevant.
If you're not a NASCAR fan, you may have missed the brouhaha. Bruton Smith (who is big time in NASCAR, owns several tracks, etc) was getting started on building a drag strip for NHRA-sanctioned events. Concord decided to fix him, but good, by changing the zoning to disallow drag strips.

Charlotte NC put a mandatory ban on lawn watering into place yesterday, and tomorrow Concord, Kannapolis, Harrisburg, and Landis will have bans in effect.
Your last chance to water your lawn in Cabarrus County is tonight from 8p to 8a tomorrow. For a list of current watering restrictions in Charlotte NC and surrounding counties, click here.

It's finally official, the folks at Great Wolf Resorts (out of Madison WI) are putting their next waterpark resort in Concord NC! It will be located in the quickly growing area around Concord Mills Mall, near Lowe's Motor Speedway.
Of course we have some naysayers...who cite water concerns (the resort recycles what it uses), the fact that only resort guests can use the waterpark (just like Disney World), that the jobs are service-oriented (well, I hate to be the one who notices that manufacturing jobs are gone).

It's hot here in Charlotte NC, hotter than usual (over 100 degrees today and HUMID!). And it's dry-we haven't had nearly enough rain lately.
So the local governments (that is, Concord, Kannapolis, Harrisburg, and Landis in Cabarrus County) are asking folks to voluntarily get smart with their water usage. It's not required yet-if we would all pitch in and behave, mandatory restrictions wouldn't be necessary.
And we're not talking about things that are difficult to do! Here are some of the suggestions for cutting back:
Water your lawn, if you must, between 9p and 7a. (*If you didn't already know, watering during the day just evaporates … (5 comments)
