habitat cabarrus: Habitat Cabarrus House Starts 10/4/08!! - 10/01/08 04:54 PM
So you're feeling a little anxious these days? Worried about the economy and the election? Come get things back into perspective starting this Saturday, October 4 2008 as we begin the construction of the Leigh Brown house for Habitat Cabarrus in Concord NC. We have a family ready to go to work, ready to get out of substandard housing here in Cabarrus County- into a home of their own where they have a safe place to live-and can build their own wealth. I've been setting aside a portion of each commission for the past two years to fund this house. I

habitat cabarrus: Getting Rid of Old Toys? - 11/29/07 02:24 PM
If you're like me, your house is covered in toys (we have two little people in our house). And as the kiddos grow, the toys get left behind. However, they're not all trashed-many are perfectly good and surely there's another kid out there who could enjoy playing with them, right? And if you're like me, your friends have plenty of toys in their homes as well. So you think first of donating the toys to a reputable organization like Habitat for Humanity (the ReStore) or Goodwill. You pack up the car with bag after bag of toys. But when you arrive, the toys are

habitat cabarrus: Habitat for Humanity,Habitat Cabarrus Update! - 04/23/07 10:12 PM
Thanks to the many among you who check in periodically on our Women Build House for Habitat Cabarrus! We had a great build day in Concord NC on Saturday, framing day is rather special since it's the first volunteer event and the special event of the First Nail, which is of course hammered in by the prospective homeowner! Our group of volunteers, mostly women with a few token, hard-working men, got the walls up without incident (thank God!). Only a few sunburned faces and backs to report. We even had some much-needed publicity from the local newspaper, the Independent Tribune. Check out the photo of

habitat cabarrus: Challenge to Benefit Habitat for Humanity - 04/16/07 01:06 PM
OK. Many of you who take the time to read my blog (thank you) are aware that I am a strong supporter of Habitat for Humanity, in particular my local affiliate, Habitat Cabarrus. I'm chairing the 2007 Women Build house, which is supposed to officially start this coming weekend. This is a national project of Habitat for Humanity, which supports houses built by women. Our recipient family for this home is a single mom and her two children. She's been living in Section 8 housing-and in particular, her unit was very substandard. She's put in more than her required sweat equity hours

habitat cabarrus: It's Not About ME....It's All About YOU! - 11/15/06 11:32 AM
This morning was our annual Realizing the Dream Asking Breakfast for Habitat Cabarrus, where we get together community leaders and supporters of Habitat to allow everyone to make their annual contribution, and learn more about what the organization's plans for the next year are (for us, 15 houses and implementing the A Brush with Kindness program). Our speaker was a gentleman by the name of Honor Bell. He's a decorated veteran, child of the projects, and currently the leader of Florida's initiatives for community service. He said something that really stuck with me-It's Not About Me-It's All About YOU!-and it made me

habitat cabarrus: Jazzed for Real Estate!!! - 11/09/06 02:15 PM
So I just returned from a board meeting for Habitat Cabarrus, we were talking about development and opportunities for the upcoming year. Can I tell you how EXCITED i am to be involved in this organization? We're hoping to build more houses at full funding in 2007 than in any of our preceding 16 years, and identified some new partners to help us meet these goals. Our affiliate is young, and already our homeowners contribute over $100,000 to our tax base annually! The mission of Habitat is to help families build and purchase their own homes to escape substandard housing. One of

habitat cabarrus: Giving Back to the Community - 10/10/06 09:23 AM
I've found that many folks don't know that Habitat for Humanity is a global organization that operates out of local affiliates. I'm on the Board for our local affiliate here in Cabarrus County. As real estate professionals/loan officers/escrow agents, it's a natural fit for us to support Habitat and its mission of eliminating poverty housing. Why? Each Habitat homeowner EARNS the house-they're not free-these are hard-working folks who make substantially less than the average income in the area. They've qualified for an interest-free loan and must invest a significant number of hours in sweat equity before being eligible for their own
