harrisburg nc: A Hard Truth To Grasp - 02/12/08 07:31 PM
It's worse than the age old 'chicken or the egg' argument...since it affects how people perceive their biggest financial investment-their homes. Which is correct-market value or tax value? Doesn't sound like a difficult question when I write it down, but it's an ongoing discussion with homeowners in Charlotte NC (and especially in Cabarrus County-Concord, Kannapolis, Harrisburg, in light of the recent property tax revaluation). Seems that in some parts of the country, tax values have some semblance of relation to market values. Not so around here. And that's hard to accept for relocating families who see listing prices which are far off from

harrisburg nc: Welcome Traci England, My Newest Buyer Partner! - 02/08/08 08:22 AM
Traci England has joined my team as a buyer partner. Traci is on the ball and has already joined AR so go say hello. =) Traci's extensive background in new home sales is going to serve her well in general brokerage, residential real estate, here in the Charlotte NC area. She spent several years with Turnberry Homes and was instrumental in helping me win their listings as they close the North and South Carolina divisions. Traci has a strong reputation in the marketplace as a true advocate for buyers-which is evidenced by the fact that she is still in contact with folks who

harrisburg nc: The Tax Man Cometh! (In Cabarrus County NC, that is) - 01/16/08 07:48 PM
Hurts, doesn't it? I got my love letter from the Cabarrus County Tax Assessor today as well. Folks who live in Concord, Harrisburg, Kannapolis, Mount Pleasant, and Midland NC are feeling the pinch tonight. You see, in North Carolina, very often our tax values lag market values. It's the natural side effect of the amount of new construction in the area-the tax office can barely keep up with new builds, much less resale homes! But the North Carolina general statutes try to keep the local counties in line by requiring that re-assessments occur at least every 8 years. (You know, market values can

harrisburg nc: Mandatory BAN On Lawn Watering - 09/26/07 08:36 AM
Charlotte NC put a mandatory ban on lawn watering into place yesterday, and tomorrow Concord, Kannapolis, Harrisburg, and Landis will have bans in effect. Your last chance to water your lawn in Cabarrus County is tonight from 8p to 8a tomorrow. For a list of current watering restrictions in Charlotte NC and surrounding counties, click here. Folks, this is a serious drought. If you think water is an endless resource, think again. This is the lowest YTD rainfall total for the Charlotte region in 128 years. We need rain, there's no getting around that fact. And until it falls, we have to be

harrisburg nc: I Changed My Mind - 09/17/07 01:49 PM
And am no longer a candidate for Harrisburg NC Town Council. The main reason that I've decided to withdraw my candidacy is that I've been selected to sing in a very small choral group-and it's an opportunity that I can't pass up at this time. After all, I'm getting older and I won't be able to sing forever (at least not without sounding like someone in the Mayberry choir!). The new group is called VOX- led by David Tang and Peppie Culvar, and we'll be singing Bach's St John's Passion in a movie, as well as participating as the chorus for Aida,

harrisburg nc: I Love First-Time Buyers! - 09/14/07 01:47 PM
There's just something special about working with someone who is buying their first home. I just got off the phone with a lady who received my name from one of my past clients (who herself had been referred to me by a past client-it's a lovely domino effect!). Her lease is up in November and she's ready to start the process of purchasing a home here in Charlotte NC (although she may wind up in Concord NC, Huntersville NC, or Harrisburg NC). She's a smart cookie. She's got a good month and a half to locate a home, since it takes roughly

harrisburg nc: ALERT: Mandatory Water Restrictions in Harrisburg NC 08.27.2007 - 08/27/07 02:28 PM
Hot off the presses....we now have mandatory water restrictions in Harrisburg NC as a response to the current drought situation. Yes, we had a thunderstorm last night (first rain in what, 6 weeks?), but it wasn't enough. And too many people aren't conscious of their water usage. So here we go: *Watering and irrigation of lawns, ornamental plants, and gardens shall occur only between 8:00 PM and 8:00 AM on Wednesday and Saturday. Businesses whose stock in trade is live plants, including nurseries and retail garden centers are exempt from this provision.*Planting of new ornamental plants or seeding of lawns shall be

harrisburg nc: Hey Harrisburg NC Homeowners-Save Some Money! - 08/17/07 09:10 AM
Here's an easy way to save a little money today, if you live in Harrisburg NC or in the Harrisburg NC fire districts! Our fire equipment has been upgraded, and as such, we're eligible for a reduction in our homeowner's insurance rates. Just call your insurance agent (if you don't like the one you have, I highly recommend Lou Lagana with State Farm in Harrisburg, he's wonderful). And of course, if you need any information regarding real estate in and around Harrisburg NC, you know who to call. We're always glad to help.

harrisburg nc: Harrisburg NC Update-Big Box Doesn't Always Win! - 08/16/07 08:36 AM
Hot off the presses in Harrisburg NC, where we've been struggling with the issues that surround smart growth! Our town turned down a zoning request from Lowe's Home Improvement in the fall, and the town was promptly sued by Lowe's. Lovely, right? Last night, the town received word from the judge that the town's decision to deny rezoning was upheld. If we don't want Lowe's there, we don't have to have Lowe's there. Of course as most of you know, my biggest goal for the town is to keep out Wal-Mart and its ilk. This kind of decision should give heart to the folks

harrisburg nc: Please Be Smart About Your Water Usage! - 08/06/07 01:51 PM
It's hot here in Charlotte NC, hotter than usual (over 100 degrees today and HUMID!). And it's dry-we haven't had nearly enough rain lately. So the local governments (that is, Concord, Kannapolis, Harrisburg, and Landis in Cabarrus County) are asking folks to voluntarily get smart with their water usage. It's not required yet-if we would all pitch in and behave, mandatory restrictions wouldn't be necessary. And we're not talking about things that are difficult to do! Here are some of the suggestions for cutting back: Water your lawn, if you must, between 9p and 7a. (*If you didn't already know, watering during the day just evaporates

harrisburg nc: It's Official, I'm Running for Harrisburg NC Town Council - 07/12/07 03:35 PM
What in the world am I thinking, you say? Well, I figure a little new blood might be good for the town council. We've had a lot of drama around these parts in trying to determine what we want the future of Harrisburg to be. Stay tuned for the campaign updates (such as they are). I'm determined to spend no more money on this campaign than the $5.00 required to file my candidacy. It's truly ridiculous, the waste of money and trees that is represented by the little signs all over town... Oh-and you heard it here first!!

harrisburg nc: It's Not Just About The Price. - 07/06/07 04:54 PM
I pulled into my driveway this afternoon, and was immediately prospected by a landscaper who was going door-to-door soliciting new business. I have a gorgeous yard, not quite THIS gorgeous but it's easily one of the best yards in Heatherstone and quite possibly in all of Harrisburg NC. So I found it interesting that this young entrepreneur felt the need to tell me how much better my lawn could look if HE were the landscaper instead of my current company. Heck, he promised that he could beat their price easily. Asked what I was currently paying for lawn service. I told him. He

harrisburg nc: Grocery Stores In and Around Charlotte NC - 06/05/07 08:08 PM
I work with a lot of relocating folks, coming to buy a home in Charlotte NC or the surrounding areas courtesy of their jobs at Bank of America or Wachovia or TIAA-CREF or Billy Graham Ministries or Lowe's Home Improvement. One of the little things we chat about while we're touring the area is what grocery stores are where and what they're like. Our fanciest and finest grocery store (outside of the specialty stores) is Harris Teeter. Locally owned and operated and one of the more successful grocery chains in the southeast, it's universally acknowledged as our best. Not that anything really comes

harrisburg nc: Gotta Give Some Praise! - 05/22/07 03:39 PM
You know, it's so often easier to rant than it is to rave about a good experience, isn't it? I'm working with a buyer client who is currently living out of state. They're in the process of relocating to the Charlotte NC (particularly Harrisburg NC) area, once their home is built. They very wisely chose to use a buyer agent when purchasing new construction. Based on their price range and desired area, we settled on a builder. In this instance, Mercedes Homes. They're a national builder that's been active and growing in the Charlotte NC new construction market for the past few years. We

harrisburg nc: Coming To Charlotte Between Now and the End of May? - 05/16/07 12:01 PM
If you were thinking of visiting Charlotte NC or Concord NC over the next couple of weeks, I hope you already have your hotel reservations. Perhaps you're not a NASCAR fan (yet-if you relocate to Charlotte NC or Concord NC, you will be!), so you're not familiar with the hoopla surrounding the Nextel All-Star Race (Saturday night, May 19th) or the Coca-Cola 600 (Sunday, May 27th). Think it's just another event? Think again. There will be an estimated 180,000 people in attendance at the Coca-Cola 600. You heard me correctly, 180,000!!! That makes Lowe's Motor Speedway the third largest city in North Carolina
