As a realtor, the five words I most dread hearing from a colleague are, "Tell me about your client(s)."

Just what does the other party want to know about my client(s) and why?

I am certainly not going to disclose information that could be used to illegally discriminate against anyone I represent.  Frankly if you are fishing for information, my clients' age, ethnic background, sexual orientation, religion, political affiliation, military service record, marital status, and where they lived before is no one else's business.

UNLESS...

  • They are moving into an age-restricted community.
  • They are applying for a loan with age or status (i.e., veteran) requirements.
  • The home they would like to purchase is being offered under a special program with age or status limitations.

In these cases, the person asking for the information should make clear that the inquiry is necessary.

Instead of, "How old are your clients?," ask, "Do they meet the age requirement?"  Instead of, "Is your client a veteran?," say, "This property is being offered under a special program for veterans only; does your client qualify?"

I will happily disclose necessary information if I understand why you need it.  Just don't expect me to tell you that my client is a disabled Chicago Cubs fan with 14 grandchildren who plan to visit often.
