big south fork: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Exceptional 14 Acres At 917 Spruce Creek Drive - 08/15/10 09:03 AM
It's hard to find this much acreage in the very desirable Spruce Creek equestrian community; passersby are always impressed with the four-board fencing that seems to go on forever at 917 Spruce Creek Drive! The owners of this exceptionally large parcel, almost fourteen acres, intended to protect their privacy by buying the lots on either side and the one directly across the road and now your privacy will be protected! This property is ideal for those retiring to this area with several horses. From here, you can ride right into Big South Fork National Park from the Spruce Creek trails.

big south fork: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Chaps or Chinks? - 04/20/10 06:32 AM
When you're riding in Big South Fork National Park, you'll see riders wearing a variety of Western-style clothing and gear. Many riders wear chaps or chinks.
Chaps and chinks are both usually made of smooth leather, or suede, and are usually seen in colors such as black, dark brown, navy, dark green, tan and cream. They can be simple, plain and utilitarian or custom made with a combinations of colors and finishes, with fringe or other decorative touches such as conchos.
They are intended to protect the rider's legs from brush and are worn over one's trousers, usually jeans. They buckle … (8 comments)

big south fork: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Trail Riders Urged To Use Bridle Tags - 04/19/10 07:45 AM
Big South Fork National Park in Jamestown, Tennessee is horse country and, now that spring is here, trucks and trailers are making their way to the various horse campgrounds and cabins near the national park as riders come from all over this half of the country to enjoy the best trail riding east of the Mississippi.
It's not uncommon to have a loose or lost horse in a strange setting and riders are advised to invest in a small bridle tag so your horse will have his contact information handy.
Go to www.terrificpet.com and order the large tag for $4.95. It … (3 comments)

big south fork: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Right Church, Right Pew - 04/16/10 05:23 AM
If you're a churchgoer in the Big South Fork area, you can't go wrong. The major denominations are well represented, both here in Jamestown and in surrounding towns.
As you'd expect, there's Southern Baptist and Freewill Baptist. There's Methodist, Presbyterian, Lutheran and Episcopal, as well as Unitarian Universalist (UU).
Others include Catholic, Seventh Day Adventist, Jehovah's Witness and Mennonite.
Some have spires, some have stained glass, some hold services in a commercial metal building.
Some don't look like they could hold more than 50 people but they all have one thing in common….they are well attended, judging by the number of … (2 comments)

big south fork: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Timber Ridge Welcomes Day Trippers - 04/13/10 08:10 AM
Timber Ridge Horse Campground here in Jamestown, Tennessee is popular with campers from out of the area, evidenced by the fact that it was voted "#1 five-star horse campground in the Big South Fork area" and second best horse campground out of 800 nationally by horsetraildirectory.com, which rates horse campgrounds based on campers' own reviews.
Owners Dee and Lee Stevens are smart business people, as well as being warm hearted and generous; they have created a parking area for "day trippers" like me, riders who live locally but who would like to trailer over to ride the trails on that side … (7 comments)

big south fork: Tennessee Equestrian Communities Near Big South Fork: Rockhouse Ranch - 04/02/10 08:36 AM
ROCKHOUSE RANCH is Big South Fork's most prestigious address, where several interesting homes and barns have been built or are presently under construction. Serene country lanes wind through this private, gated community and the interior system of easy trails connects directly with the miles and miles of varied trails in Big South Fork, which you'll access by riding right out your back door—literally! big south fork: Tennessee Equestrian Communities Near Big South Fork: Ridge Top Acres - 03/31/10 07:30 AM
Retiring to Tennessee is appealing for a number of reasons, such as mild winters and low taxes, but for trail riders the draw is Big South Fork National Park, renowned for its breathtaking scenery and fabulous network of trails extending up into Kentucky. As the area grows in popularity, equestrian communities have been developed to accommodate humans and horses.

Ridge Top Acres is a 1,700-acre development located approximately seven miles from Jamestown, Tennessee, adjacent to the Big South Fork National Park. As you drive through Ridge Top, you'll see wooded tracts ranging from small to substantial, from two or so … (14 comments)

big south fork: Tennessee Equestrian Communities Near Big South Fork: Spruce Creek Acres - 03/30/10 07:02 AM
Big South Fork, Tennessee, is a destination for trail riders and many who have come to ride in the Big South Fork National Park have come to stay.
Several equestrian communities have been developed now near Big South Fork. Ten years ago, people who wanted to come here for the riding bought parcels of land in Spruce Creek Acres, the oldest of these equestrian communities, and began to build cabarns (cabin/barn combination) or small cabins. Each one is different and most are tucked into the trees, so it has a very rural look and feel. Deeded trails wind throughout and connect … (11 comments)

big south fork: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Welcome Home! - 03/27/10 08:11 AM
Put your feet up and make yourself at home. Sit on the front porch of this cute cabin with your feet up on the rail, up there at the top of the hill in a very private setting.

Or maybe you'd rather while away a summer afternoon on the lovely long screened porch with a good book and a glass of lemonade. The master bedroom opens onto the screened porch, so wander out there in your bare feet with that first cup of coffee. The kitchen also opens onto the screened porch, in a master stroke of design, so invite … (6 comments)

big south fork: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: These Fleas and Ticks Don't Bite - 03/26/10 05:10 PM
These big plastic fleas and ticks are hanging above the reception desk at Dogwood Animal Hospital in Jamestown, Tennessee, a vivid reminder that spring is here and it's time to start thinking about protection for pets.

Veterinarian Cindy Johnson has a very busy full-service practice, with a constant stream of cats and dogs coming to the office. She also tends to large animals, making the occasional farm call although, with such a large equine population in the equestrian communities near Big South Fork National Park, many local horse owners, myself included, trailer their horses into town for routine matters like … (3 comments)

big south fork: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Summon Help With SPOT - 03/22/10 08:00 AM
I keep writing about how the Big South Fork is rugged country and trail riders in the backcountry need to be prepared for any eventuality. I personally have never had a problem but I try to think of what emergencies might occur and to be prepared to deal with them.
Cell coverage is iffy-so you can't count on being able to use your BlackBerry. I carry a small device called "SPOT" that performs several functions and can be relied upon because it uses satellite communication. It's the first and only satellite messenger.
The SOS/911 function would be used in the event … (3 comments)

big south fork: SPEECHLESS SUNDAY: Tell Me Something I Didn't Already Know! - 03/21/10 10:40 AM

Yesterday was a glorious early spring day here at the Big South Fork in Jamestown, Tennessee so I packed a lunch and set off with a riding buddy to explore a trail that we had not been on before. We had a good map and the Ridge Top trail is well marked, so where did we go wrong?
We obviously missed a turn because the horses had to clamber up a VERY steep hill, stopping every few steps to rest. I saw a sign on a tree at the top of the hill and since we were obviously lost, I … (11 comments)

big south fork: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: It's Not Too late To Look - 03/20/10 08:34 AM
But it's going to be, very soon!
Anyone interested in buying property or in building doesn't have much time left to see "the lay of the land." Trees are barely budding but, in a month, when the leaves have unfurled, it will be too late to get a good sense of the topography or to site buildings.
People tend to think of winter as a period of hibernation but it's actually the best time to look at land. There's rarely more than a dusting of snow, or a few inches at most. Winter's over, though, and it's early spring in middle … (4 comments)

big south fork: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Take Your Tack To Jay's Leather - 03/19/10 07:27 AM
The Big South Fork area in Jamestown, Tennessee is horse country, all right. And with horses comes….as every horseman knows….repairs to leather tack! But WHERE do you take your tack and equipment when it needs to be repaired?
Not to worry. You take it to Jay Beauman in Muddy Pond. Jay certainly knows his trade; he is a third generation leather worker. He's 27 now and has been working in his father's shop since he was 15. The Muddy Pond Mennonite community is known for its sorghum mill, for the sheds, gazebos and porch furniture produced by its wood workers and … (2 comments)

big south fork: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: An Unlikely Landmark! - 03/18/10 07:32 AM
The Spruce Creek equestrian community is located at the west entrance to Big South Fork National Park, almost equidistant between Jamestown and Oneida, Tennessee so Spruce Creek residents will travel to one town or the other, depending on the nature of their errands.
To get to Oneida, you head east on State Highway 297, also called "Leatherwood Ford Road." If you've never been there before, you'll likely ask directions to wherever you're going and the answer will likely be, "When Third tees into Alberta Street, you'll see a palm tree straight ahead..."
A WHAT?? Tennessee is temperate, not tropical, so that … (7 comments)

big south fork: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Buying Bedding For The Barnyard - 03/16/10 06:03 AM
Big South Fork is horse country and most of the local realtors advertise themselves as "Equestrian Specialists" or say that they are "Specializing in Equine Properties." In this case, actions speak louder than words because buyers who are looking at horse properties are going to ask LOTS of questions, especially if they are unfamiliar with the area, so they need a realtor who not only lists horse properties but who knows horses and who can answer those questions.
Buyers are turning information over in their minds, assessing what it would be like to live here. When you have developed a support … (8 comments)

big south fork: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: What A Pleasure A Well-Marked Trail Is! - 03/12/10 06:27 AM
We at Tennessee Recreational Properties mainly list and sell horse properties since the Big South Fork is such a destination for trail riders. That means that we need to know our stuff, to be thoroughly familiar with the locations of various trailheads and where properties are located relative to trails in the national park.
And we are…because WE RIDE!
I was recently given a map of the trails in an equestrian community that I was not familiar with, so I made it a point to go and ride the Ridge Top trails in order to provide first-hand information to customers and … (6 comments)

big south fork: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Telling The Truth About Local Horse Campgrounds - 03/08/10 05:49 AM
Big South Fork National Park is a destination for trail riders from all over the east coast, and with good reason. The trails are wonderful and there are a number of horse campgrounds in proximity to the park that offer accommodations for visitors.
Many riders plan their vacation well in advance because the campgrounds are booked on the best weekends, of course. Each campground has its own character and the best way to decide if you want to commit is to go to Horse Trail Directory (http://www.horsetraildirectory.com)and click on a particular state...in this case, Tennessee...and read the reviews of what other campers … (6 comments)

big south fork: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: This Cabin Has Something For Everyone! - 03/06/10 09:29 AM
At first, you think this is just another cabin in an area renowned for its fabulous trail riding. Wilderness Resorts in the Station Camp area of Oneida, Tennessee, is renowned for the opportunity to vacation in fully-furnished log cabins. Each is tucked away on beautiful wooded sections throughout the resort, creating convenient trail access directly from your cabin into Big South Fork National Park, and the privacy you'd expect from a log cabin in the woods. With this cabin, Blueberry Knoll, you can have your cake and eat it, too. Use it when your schedule permits and cover its costs; this … (2 comments)

I live minutes from the Cumberland Trailhead into Big South Fork National Park, in Spruce Creek Acres, an equestrian community that abuts the park itself. Horses are a major part of daily life here and this is a very active, supportive horse-oriented community. It is a gift to work as a realtor here, listing horse properties and selling horse properties to horse people! We joke that I've probably done more real estate on horseback than off! If you want to "live where you love to ride," let me help you find YOUR Big South Fork horse property .
