realtor big south fork: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Oh, Throw Me In That Briar Patch! - 12/10/09 08:22 AM
When was the last time the agency you work for offered to pay for shoeing your horse?! When, in fact, was that ever a WORK-RELATED expense?! Here at Big South Fork in Jamestown, Tennessee, horse properties are a way of life for realtors and alot of would-be buyers want to ride the trails here to get a feel for the area. I bought a second horse last year to be my "real estate" horse," a Tennessee Walker that I could count on to provide a safe and smooth ride. But, it's been a less-than-stellar year in terms of closings and commissions

realtor big south fork: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: What's In Those Saddlebags, Anyway? - 10/30/09 05:45 AM
Big South Fork National Park in Jamestown, Tennessee, has 125,000 acres of fabulous trail riding but it is rugged country so most riders carry saddlebags filled with....whatever you might need! A trail saddle or a Western saddle has a lot of strategically placed D-rings for attaching a variety of bags. In front, I have a small bag that holds a bottle of water, my Blackberry and a GPS(and a pair of cheap cheater reading glasses so I can SEE them)...items that I want readily accessible. A flat pouch snapped to the breastplate holds emergency contact info, a copy of my air

realtor big south fork: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: No Rest For The Weary! - 10/28/09 12:56 PM
Some months ago, riding acquaintenances from Vermont looked me up when they considered relocating to the Big South Fork area in Jamestown, Tennessee. They subsequently planned a trip and I recommended that they stay at a lovely bed-and-breakfast, the Wildwood Lodge, just up the road. And what would a trip to Tennessee be without a ride on a Tennessee Walker? So...I took them riding. They said that they had never ridden gaited horses and did not know how. "What's to know," I said, "get on!" After the first ride, they had grins from ear to ear. It was such a pleasure

realtor big south fork: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Even This Cat's A VOLS Fan! - 10/23/09 08:25 AM
I recently wrote a post about the University Of Tennessee football team, the VOLS, and the incredible support they enjoy in this part of the country. It was inspired by some amusing pictures I took, after realizing how many things in this area are orange-and-white, the team colors. http://activerain.com/blogsview/1247944/seems-like-everyone-in-tennessee-is-a-vols-fan-. I came down the pet food aisle in Walmart the other day, here in Jamestown, Tennessee, and just had to laugh when I saw this endcap display of clothes for dogs, all in the distinctive VOLS orange and white! My Siamese cat, Tazz, wears a harness and walks on a leash so...I couldn't resist! Judging

realtor big south fork: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: You're Either Making Dust or Eating It! - 10/15/09 07:19 AM
You may have seen that slogan on a teeshirt; it's considered "Cowboy Wisdom." Well, it's pretty much of a true statement and can certainly be applied to the world of real estate. Gone are the days when realtors went to a real estate office and waited for customers to walk in. Now it's all about getting the customers' attention through some form of media. I am literally a few minutes from Big South Fork National Park in Jamestown, Tennessee, which is a destination for trail riders. People who live within a few hours come on weekends and others trailer their horses

realtor big south fork: Watch Where You Put Your Fingers! - 09/30/09 07:44 AM
This is good advice in any situation but especially for realtors. I just sent my husband over to my newest listing to put a sign in the yard, to take a couple of pictures and to find the key that the sellers said was hidden. I told him not to feel around on the ledge "near the door there, to the left." I try to carry in my car all the items that I might need to work as a realtor, including a small ladder, gloves and a flashlight...for just such an occasion! I am TERRIFIED of spiders and have NO

realtor big south fork: Moving To The Big South Fork, Tennessee: Step Two Is Clearing Your Land - 08/15/09 09:28 AM
If you're planning on moving to the Big South Fork, here in Jamestown, Tennessee, and you've chosen a piece of land, step two is clearing your land. There are two ways to do it, depending on the location and the lay of the land. The traditional way is for a bulldozer to fell the trees, pushing them into a huge "burn pile," which will smolder for days. The advantage to doing it this way is that stumps are removed. The disadvantage is that bulldozers leave ruts. Another choice, especially if the land is lightly wooded, is to use a lighter piece

realtor big south fork: Moving To The Big South Fork, Tennessee: Step One Is To Buy Property - 08/13/09 06:47 AM
If you're thinking of moving to the Big South Fork, here in Jamestown, Tennessee, the first step is to buy property. Many of the cabins in the Big South Fork area were built for weekenders from Knoxville, Nashville, Chattanooga or down from Kentucky. For the most part, they are very simple and generally have a bedroom and bath downstairs and a loft upstairs with a half bath (if there is one at all). Folks who are retiring to this area, drawn by the best trail riding east of the Mississippi, are in their 50's and 60's and they want creature comforts,

realtor big south fork: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: In The Heart Of Horse Country! - 08/10/09 11:03 AM
There's something about the shape of Tennessee barns that tells you you're deep in the heart of horse country. There's a softness to the rooflines that gives them a signature silhouette, so different from the crisp right angles and 12-pitch roofs that you find in other parts of the country. Of course, winters are mild here so barn builders don't have to factor in the "snow load" that is such a way of life in places like Vermont, upstate New York, Minnesota, Montana etc. And there are no hurricanes, so barn builders aren't limited to the single story structures you'd find

realtor big south fork: Prices Plummeting In Areas Surrounding the Big South Fork, Tennessee...NOT! - 08/01/09 08:22 AM
With the general downturn in housing prices across the country, many prospective buyers wanting land or homes in areas surrounding the Big South Fork are astounded to find that prices have held firm, on the whole, and that owners are NOT inclined to accept ridiculously low offers. The reasons are twofold: First, land abutting one of the nation's nicest national parks, where you can ride right out your back door into the best trail riding east of the Mississippi, a destination known as "The Trail Riding Capital of the Southeast," is just like waterfront on the coast or on a lake.

realtor big south fork: BIG SOUTH FORK REAL ESTATE: Porches Are A way of Life Here in Tennessee - 07/31/09 07:51 AM
Covered porches were a way of life in the 50's, in most of the country; people would sit in the shade and watch the world go by. Porches had rockers, or porch swings. Now it's decks. It's a desirable feature in newer houses to have a deck. You tend to see a table and chairs on the deck, with an umbrella, and a barbecue grill so even the furniture is different. Well, not in Tennessee! Typical cabins have a "broken-backed" roofline that forms a deep porch across the front and, for the most part, they still have rockers and porch

realtor big south fork: What is a "Halfback?" - 07/28/09 07:05 AM
I am a "Halfback," which is someone from up north....New England, upstate New York, Michigan etc...who moves to Florida, hates it and moves halfway back, to North Carolina, the Blue Ridge, eastern Kentucky or Tennessee. In my case, I had moved from Vermont to the Florida panhandle but found, all too soon, that the climate did not suit me. Too hot, too humid, too flat, too featureless! I fled Florida three years later, still in possession of two long-handled windshield scrapers, my ergonomic snow shovel, forty pair of wool socks, four flannel nightgowns and a down coat. Oh, yeah....I still had

realtor big south fork: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Topographic Treasures - 07/27/09 09:00 AM
Heavy rain started sometime well before dawn and pounded down for several hours. By the time I picked up my Buyer's Agent client yesterday morning, it had tapered off to a drizzle and we set off to see several cabins on the other side of the gorge. I live near the Big South Fork national park, Tennessee, on the Jamestown side. To get to the Oneida side, we had to cross the the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River as it flows north into Kentucky. The gorge is approximately 600 feet in depth, rimmed with magnificent sandstone bluffs. (In

realtor big south fork: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Shop 'Till You Drop! - 07/25/09 04:24 PM
It's the World's Longest Yardsale, also known as the 127 Corridor Sale... 650 miles, or thereabouts, across five states, from Gadsden, Alabama, to West Unity, Ohio. Headquartered in Jamestown, Tennessee at the Fentress County Chamber of Commerce, this unique event was first held in 1987 to lure travelers off of the interstate highways and onto the scenic back roads along the Route 127 corridor through Kentucky and Tennessee. 2009 marks the 22nd anniversary of the sale, which keeps getting longer and longer! Ohio joined only four years ago. Attracting hundreds of thousands of bargain-hunting road trippers, the annual World's Longest Yardsale always

I live minutes from the Cumberland Trailhead into Big South Fork National Park, in Spruce Creek Acres, an equestrian community that abuts the park itself. Horses are a major part of daily life here and this is a very active, supportive horse-oriented community. It is a gift to work as a realtor here, listing horse properties and selling horse properties to horse people! We joke that I've probably done more real estate on horseback than off!
If you want to "live where you love to ride," let me help you find YOUR Big South Fork horse property .
