tennessee: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Vanderbilt University, The Harvard Of The South - 10/11/10 08:07 AM
When you live here at the Big South Fork, it's inevitable that you will be going to Nashville at some point, for one reason or another. You may want to take a drive through the campus of Vanderbilt University, known as "The Harvard of The South." Vanderbilt was founded in 1873 with a million-dollar endowment from "Commodore" Cornelius Vanderbilt, a New York entrepreneur who made his fortune in shipping and, later, in railroads. Although he was, at the time of his death, the wealthiest man in America, he is not a noted philanthropist. He initially intended to locate the university named

tennessee: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Re-Introducing Extinct Eastern Elk Herds - 08/19/10 08:16 AM
While there has been some controversy surrounding the re-population of black bears in the Big South Fork, there is none at all concerning the introduction of elk in Tennessee. Loss of habitat and over-exploitation by man resulted in the disappearance of elk from the eastern United States and they have not been seen in Tennessee since 1865. At present Michigan, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina,Wisconsin, Arkansas and Kentucky have resident herds and several other eastern states are looking into the possibility of also reintroducing elk. Elk have the potential to cause crop and property damage so the present elk restoration

tennessee: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Exceptional 14 Acres At 917 Spruce Creek Drive - 08/15/10 09:03 AM
It's hard to find this much acreage in the very desirable Spruce Creek equestrian community; passersby are always impressed with the four-board fencing that seems to go on forever at 917 Spruce Creek Drive! The owners of this exceptionally large parcel, almost fourteen acres, intended to protect their privacy by buying the lots on either side and the one directly across the road and now your privacy will be protected! This property is ideal for those retiring to this area with several horses. From here, you can ride right into Big South Fork National Park from the Spruce Creek trails.

tennessee: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Land On The Lake - 11/24/09 08:25 AM
Anyone who has been to this area knows about nearby Dale Hollow Lake, renowned for its ability to produce trophy smallmouth bass. In fact, the world record holder was pulled from Dale Hollow, which has produced the two largest smallmouth bass ever recorded! With 620 miles of scenic shorelines and ultra-clear water, it's a paradise for vacationers, retirees and fishermen of all ages. Tennessee Recreational Properties offers two acres, lightly wooded with many mature old trees, at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac overlooking the Obey River as it flows into Dale Hollow Lake. There's a wonderful water view when the leaves

tennessee: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Jack Daniels, A Glass Full Of Contradictions - 11/03/09 03:09 AM
When you're here at the Big South Fork in Jamestown, Tennessee, you're in a part of the country known for its Bourbon whiskey. Many people think of Jack Daniel's as Bourbon but curiously enough, Jack Daniel's ISN'T Bourbon! What it is, in actual fact, is Tennessee Sour Mash Whiskey. The square black bottle, called "Black Jack," is world famous and is widely recognized as good "sippin' whiskey." That's the first of many contradictions in the Jack Daniel's story. On May 4, 1964, Congress recognized Bourbon whiskey as a "distinctive product of the United States." Like Bourbon, Jack Daniel's is made of a

tennessee: Seems Like Everyone In Tennessee Is A VOLS Fan! - 09/21/09 07:37 AM
No matter which way you turn, you'll see pride and support for the University of Tennessee football team, the Tennessee Volunteers or "Vols," as they are known far and wide. The nickname is derived from the State of Tennessee's own nickname. Tennessee is known as the "Volunteer State," having sent more volunteers than any other state but Virginia to fight for the Confederacy during the Civil War and more volunteers to Union ranks than any other state, period. Volunteer soldiers from Tennessee also played a prominent role in the War of 1812, notably The Battle of New Orleans. The Vols play

tennessee: Tennessee: Three Different And Distinct Places - 08/28/09 11:59 AM
Tennessee is actually three different and distinct places, each with its own regional flavor. Traveling from west to east, you'll find that Tennessee is divided geographically into distinct areas; western Tennessee, middle Tennessee and eastern Tennessee. Major cities associated with Tennessee are Memphis in the west, Nashville in Middle Tennessee, with Knoxville and Chattanooga in eastern Tennessee. The Mississippi River marks the state's western border. As you move east, land begins to rise farther above sea level and rolling hills begin to take shape. The Tennessee River marks the division between west Tennessee and middle Tennessee, which is known for its

tennessee: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Are You Ready To Ride? - 07/29/09 07:45 AM
This part of Tennessee, the Big South Fork, is a destination for trail riders. It is called "The Trail Riding Capital of the Southeast" and is, in fact, the best riding east of the Mississippi! The Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area includes 125,000 acres with hundreds of miles of trails. The local terrain is referred to as "rolling" and some of it is ....well...more rolling than others! Some of it is, in fact, STEEP. There are many scenic overlooks where you can tie up at hitching rails and enjoy the view but first you have to get up

tennessee: What is a "Halfback?" - 07/28/09 07:05 AM
I am a "Halfback," which is someone from up north....New England, upstate New York, Michigan etc...who moves to Florida, hates it and moves halfway back, to North Carolina, the Blue Ridge, eastern Kentucky or Tennessee. In my case, I had moved from Vermont to the Florida panhandle but found, all too soon, that the climate did not suit me. Too hot, too humid, too flat, too featureless! I fled Florida three years later, still in possession of two long-handled windshield scrapers, my ergonomic snow shovel, forty pair of wool socks, four flannel nightgowns and a down coat. Oh, yeah....I still had

tennessee: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: I Recommend Riding A Shod Horse - 07/26/09 08:39 AM
I've heard people say that you can ride the Big South Fork without shoes on your horses. That only works if you stick to relatively flat, mostly sandy trails, or if your horses' feet are tough as nails. This is rocky terrain, no doubt about it. On some of the steeper trails, there are outcroppings of sandstone that horses have to navigate and the last thing you want is to be on a horse whose feet slip out from under him! Most people who live here and ride these trails regularly have their farrier weld Borium caulks or Drill Tek to

tennessee: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Unusual cool weather makes riding a pleasure! - 07/23/09 04:00 PM
What happened to The Dog Days of Summer? It was an unusually cool and rainy spring and it is now a very unusual PLEASANT July! In fact, this run of cool weather has broken a previous low temperature for July 21 in Nashville that was set when Rutherford B. Hayes was president! When the temperature at the National Weather Service station dipped to 58 degrees at 5:30 a.m. that morning, it wiped out the previous record low for the date of 60 degrees, which was set in 1877. It's generally 5-10 degrees cooler up here on the Cumberland Plateau during the

I live minutes from the Cumberland Trailhead into Big South Fork National Park, in Spruce Creek Acres, an equestrian community that abuts the park itself. Horses are a major part of daily life here and this is a very active, supportive horse-oriented community. It is a gift to work as a realtor here, listing horse properties and selling horse properties to horse people! We joke that I've probably done more real estate on horseback than off!
If you want to "live where you love to ride," let me help you find YOUR Big South Fork horse property .
