trail riding: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: East Fork Is An Exciting Alternative - 10/26/10 05:50 AM
Trail riders from all over the country know that the Big South Fork National Park in Jamestown, Tennessee is called, "The Trail Riding Capital Of The Southeast, boasting the best riding east of the Mississippi on 180+ miles of trails. What they may NOT know is that there are another 130 miles of spectacular trails, south of town, at East Fork Stables, which are beautifully marked and maintained. East Fork encompasses 12,000 acres, privately owned, and has 150 stalls as well as areas for picketing and pasture. In addition to the campsites, there are cabins ranging from primitive to deluxe, and

trail riding: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Be Safe During Bee Season - 09/29/10 09:05 AM
Fall is a favorite time of year for trail riding and nowhere more so than here in Jamestown, Tennessee, in Big South Fork National Park. With daytime temperatures in the 70's, riders enjoy those mellow fall days when the woods are a medley of reds and golds. But riders are the only ones who get out there in the fall; riders must always be alert for ground nests of yellow jackets which commonly build nests below ground in old rodent burrows or other cavities such as rotten tree stumps or fallen logs, fence post bases or river banks and the edges

trail riding: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Lunch At The Lodge - 08/23/10 08:17 AM
Everyone who comes to ride in Big South Fork National Park ends up at Charit Creek Hostel, one way or another. It's a memorable experience and, for some, will be the highlight of their trip. Living here, it's a ride I love to take visitors on because I know how much they will enjoy it…and, truth be told, I NEVER tire of going and always look forward to it. Charit Creek Hostel is, in fact, the only lodge within the boundaries of Big South Fork. Nestled in a scenic valley, the main structure is listed on the National Register of Historic

trail riding: SPEECHLESS SUNDAY: Big South Fork Body Parts - 08/08/10 09:01 AM
The scenery in Big South Fork National Park is pretty spectacular and trail riders often see terrain features that take their breath away. I always carry a camera because I never know when I'll see something I want to show someone. Well, the first of these body parts made me laugh. The second one made me laugh, too. With regard to the third one...there is a tree in Spruce Creek with the most perfect pert, perky pair of women's breasts that you've ever seen, or ever will see. I didn't have my camera that day but the tree was on

ATTENTION, BARGAIN HUNTERS; take a look at 502 Trailhead Lane in Spruce Creek Acres! Anyone who is familiar with Big South Fork National Park knows that proximity to trails is EVERYTHING! This cabarn is in the desirable Spruce Creek equestrian community, right on the Spruce Creek Trail about ⅛ mile from the Cumberland Trailhead into Big South Fork…you can't live much closer to the wonderful trail system in the national park! It's on a quiet cul-de-sac (named, appropriately, "Trailhead Lane") with no through traffic; turn right out of the driveway, go a couple hundred yards and…you're on the trail. A

trail riding: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Invasive Plant Pests (Who Knew?) - 07/13/10 09:31 AM
For the past couple of years, I have been doing the newsletter for the Spruce Creek Trails Association and, as I ride on various trails in or around Big South Fork National Park, I have been taking pictures of wildflowers and putting them in each bi-monthly issue, so other riders can look for them on those trails in those months. The camera in my BlackBerry is useful for this purpose but, after taking too many pictures of my pommel or my reins, I learned that I need to get off; my riding buddies don't even ask "What for?" now, when I

trail riding: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: This Is Common Here - 07/06/10 09:17 AM
When people come to the Big South Fork National Park for the wonderful trail riding, they get "hooked" and they start thinking of how they can come more often. They may be several years from retirement, not ready or able to buy a cabin, but already committed. They decide they want to live in one of the equestrian communities abutting Big South Fork, where they can access the trail system directly from their property, so they buy a piece of land. They start with bare bones. They may have some clearing done and get up a little fencing, or put up

trail riding: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: 861 Spruce Creek Drive - 07/03/10 09:58 AM
At 861 Spruce Creek Drive in Jamestown, Tennessee, you can have it both ways (or either way)! Kicking Back Cabin, 861 Spruce Creek Drive, is a popular, well known and very successful rental cabin in the desirable Spruce Creek equestrian community. It's a destination for trail riders, who return over and over to ride in Big South Fork National Park. This is a turnkey business: purchase the existing signage, website, customer list, all furnishings, dishes, linens etc. directly from the owner, independently of cabin itself and continue to operate as rental cabin to cover costs until you're ready to retire.

trail riding: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Swim Or....Well....Sink - 06/25/10 07:03 AM
The picture on the left was taken on a wonderful 65-degree day last January, when my riding buddies and I packed a lunch and went for a long trail ride down the O&W. The Oneida & Western Railroad has been defunct since the 50's and the rails have long since been ripped up, but the railbed remains and it makes a lovely long ride along the river. It's straight and level as far as you can see (and then some) so it's a favorite place for riders on gaited horses to "move out." We stopped to tighten girths and give the

trail riding: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: A Little Altitude Will Improve Your Attitude A Little! - 06/23/10 07:16 AM
Once upon a time, before the advent of air conditioning, wealthy families summered in the mountains to escape the heat. In fact, it was common for the wife to take up residence in summer quarters with the children and perhaps a nanny, au pair or household help while the patriarch stayed at home to conduct business, commuting periodically. That way of life is something most only read about, but those of us who actually live in the mountains do enjoy cooler temperatures than "flatlanders" sweltering below. In fact, for every thousand feet of elevation, it gets about 3-5 degrees cooler. That's

trail riding: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Take Cover On The Trail - 06/07/10 07:52 AM
With summer's hot, humid weather come the seasonal thunderstorms. If you're an avid trail rider, you're in a high-risk group for being a victim of a lightening strike. Savvy trail riders check the weather before setting out and usually carry a waterproof poncho because pop-up thunderstorms often occur, even when precipitation has not been forecast. These unexpected storms sometimes include high winds, hail and lightning and riders will need to take cover on the trail. How worried should you be when you're out riding and you see black clouds gather and hear the rumble of thunder… and what can you do

Here's a cute cabin tucked into the woods, not visible from the road. It's right on the horse trail in the very desirable Spruce Creek equestrian community and is only a few minute's ride to the Cumberland Trailhead into Big South Fork National Park, where you can ride for hours or even days! Sit yourself down in the inviting porch swing on lovely warm days, or you and your riding buddies can tie up at your hitching rail and relax on the porch for a minute or two with a tall glass of lemonade after a long ride, or you

trail riding: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Drumming Up Business - 04/28/10 08:19 AM
My Broker at Tennessee Recreational Properties, Sue Neff, and I are both trail riders here in the Trail Riding Capital of the Southeast so we keep our eyes open and ears to the ground, always receptive to opportunities for marketing horse properties to horse people. It seemed like the proverbial "Golden Opportunity" when we got some information from the Backcountry Trail Riders of North Georgia, telling us about their upcoming four-day ride at the renowned East Fork Stables, just south of Jamestown, Tennessee. With over 200 riders attending, we agreed to sponsor and staff a table in the East Fork pavilion.

trail riding: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Chaps or Chinks? - 04/20/10 06:32 AM
When you're riding in Big South Fork National Park, you'll see riders wearing a variety of Western-style clothing and gear. Many riders wear chaps or chinks. Chaps and chinks are both usually made of smooth leather, or suede, and are usually seen in colors such as black, dark brown, navy, dark green, tan and cream. They can be simple, plain and utilitarian or custom made with a combinations of colors and finishes, with fringe or other decorative touches such as conchos. They are intended to protect the rider's legs from brush and are worn over one's trousers, usually jeans. They buckle

trail riding: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Trail Riders Urged To Use Bridle Tags - 04/19/10 07:45 AM
Big South Fork National Park in Jamestown, Tennessee is horse country and, now that spring is here, trucks and trailers are making their way to the various horse campgrounds and cabins near the national park as riders come from all over this half of the country to enjoy the best trail riding east of the Mississippi. It's not uncommon to have a loose or lost horse in a strange setting and riders are advised to invest in a small bridle tag so your horse will have his contact information handy. Go to www.terrificpet.com and order the large tag for $4.95. It

trail riding: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Timber Ridge Welcomes Day Trippers - 04/13/10 08:10 AM
Timber Ridge Horse Campground here in Jamestown, Tennessee is popular with campers from out of the area, evidenced by the fact that it was voted "#1 five-star horse campground in the Big South Fork area" and second best horse campground out of 800 nationally by horsetraildirectory.com, which rates horse campgrounds based on campers' own reviews. Owners Dee and Lee Stevens are smart business people, as well as being warm hearted and generous; they have created a parking area for "day trippers" like me, riders who live locally but who would like to trailer over to ride the trails on that side

trail riding: BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Opportunity Knocks! - 04/10/10 08:47 AM
Are you ready to get out of the rat race but not ready to retire? Here's the solution! Tennessee Recreational Properties just listed this commercial building on a high-traffic state highway close to Jamestown, and on the way to Big South Fork National Park near several equestrian communities. As a small tack store and feed supply, selling hay and shavings for bedding, it was a destination for riders coming in to the Big South Fork for the wonderful trail riding. They didn't have to lug consumables with them because they knew they could stop in at Horse Stuff as they

I live minutes from the Cumberland Trailhead into Big South Fork National Park, in Spruce Creek Acres, an equestrian community that abuts the park itself. Horses are a major part of daily life here and this is a very active, supportive horse-oriented community. It is a gift to work as a realtor here, listing horse properties and selling horse properties to horse people! We joke that I've probably done more real estate on horseback than off!
If you want to "live where you love to ride," let me help you find YOUR Big South Fork horse property .
