I read an interesting article at:  http://money.cnn.com/2011/08/16/real_estate/buy_rent/index.htm   It talks about rental markets around the country and the benefit to buying vs. renting.
 
Buying a home in Monterey County at this time is not only affordable, it may make sense for you.  I have been showing many houses under $300,000.  There are some great deals on homes up to $500,000.  If you have the down payment of 3-5%, good credit and the desire to buy a home in Monterey County, now may be the right time for you.
