home improvement: A Tuff situation regarding my new Tuff Shed - 10/21/11 06:38 PM
A tuff situation regarding my new Tuff Shed. For years I have been wanting a shed on our property. There never seemed to be the exact right place to put it, as it would be either too visible in the yard or difficult to access, so as a result, I never got my shed. Instead, there would often be huge piles of cushions and pillows stacked behind the sofas in the family room where we hoped, few people would see them. Bags of soil would stay in the middle of a bunch of pots. My gardening tools would be thrown

home improvement: Home Remodel: Day Six and Seven - 05/03/11 03:33 PM
Day Six was a day for the guys to dig trenches all over the back yard. I'm quite amazed they can figure out the drainage plan so well, get the trenches at the right depth, lay the new drainage pipes and make sure that all areas of the yard are covered. In the past we did have drainage-natural drainage. Some water from our neighbors just north of us on the right and a little higher up would come into our yard, and our water would drain into the two yards of our neighbors to the south of us. This is the

home improvement: Home Remodel: Day Five - 05/02/11 04:51 PM
Day 5 is a day of mounds of earth-in several different areas of the yard. There is a huge mound of dirt in the area of what was our lawn, and there are two other huge mounds of dirt in the front yard on the extreme right (north) and left (south) of the house. I look at the mound to the right and spy Romi out of the corner of my eye. Romi is Polish and has worked consistently for 30 years at the house next door to us taking care of the gardening, and many construction projects for them as

home improvement: Home Remodel: Day Three and Four - 04/29/11 02:54 PM
Saturday AM Celeste, our neighbor's cat who prefers to be at our house instead of her owner's, is leaning in against the plastic covering the French doors, meowing. She wants one of us to come out and pet her, scratch her and acknowledge her. This is easier said than done. The doors do not open because they are taped shut. So I go to the back of the house and enter the yard, traipsing through the dirt, and get up on the porch to give her a scratch. When I look around I see that there is no more cement anyplace,

home improvement: What? Wallpaper is back?! - 10/29/10 03:25 PM
Hi Lesslie, I am doing some re-decorating in the house I recently purchased. I had lots of wallpaper (probably 25 years old) removed, and now I'm hearing that wallpaper is in again. Is this true? - Isabella T. Isabella, it is true that many designers are installing wallpaper. And here are a few of the reasons and things to note. Wallpaper can make a surface dramatic with its patterns and colors more easily than that of a painted surface. It also may be less expensive than installing something like a Venetian plastic or properly executed "faux" paint job. New coverings

home improvement: Home Improvement Trends for 2010 by Rismedia... - 02/05/10 05:25 PM
Home Improvement Trends for 2010 RISMEDIA, December 31, 2009-(MCT)-Most homeowners are unlikely to be building, remodeling or decorating with abandon in 2010, given the slow recovery from the recession. But if you do plan to update your home or garden, here are some trends to keep in mind. Home decor. The sleek, sophisticated but comfortable style known as "soft contemporary" will be a key look for the New Year, said Kris Kolar, vice president of interior design at Robb & Stucky Interiors. Instead of the eclectic clutter that has been popular for a while, there will be a move toward using

home improvement: Improve Your Home with the Least Possible Cash Out of Pocket - 11/13/09 01:30 PM
Hi Lesslie, We've had so many recent 'suggestions' or 'ideas' on how we can improve our home before putting it on the market. We remembered that not so long ago in one of your columns you also had a list of home improvements. Our main concern, like most sellers today, is cost and return on investment. What is the most we can do to 'improve' our home before putting it on the market with the least possible cash out of pocket? Thanks! -Linda B. Hi Linda, Here is an article that was recently published by RISMEDIA on November 10, 2009
