There are some utility companies who will provide an assessment free of charge or you can do your own audit online. You can even find out how long it may take until you are saving money becasue of upgrading your appliances to more energy efficient models.

A Few Quick Tips:

Sealing off leaks can make a big difference with summer's heat on the way. Weather-stripping, caulking and weather tape are all fairly inexpensive. Don't forget to seal around your plumbing too. Windows account for 10% of leaks, but 13% of leaks can come from where pipes enter the structure. (ALWAYS make sure you know what you are sealing! Know which pipes are exhaust pipes for a gas furnace or water heater!) If you are unsure, ask a professional!

Create your own low flow toilet. Just fill a mason jar with water or put a clean brick in the back of your tank. By displacing water you will use less water when you flush; conserving water and lowering your water bill!

Hey Charlotte, have you seen the news on the Home Buyer Tax Credit site? Congress has extended the credit for members of the Armed Services until April 30, 2011. If a service member had "official extended duty" between the dates of December 31, 2008 and May 1, 2010 with duration of duty being at least 90 days, they may qualify for the extension.

The income limits of $125,000 for individuals and $225,000 for couples filing jointly still apply. The extension does apply to both first time home buyers and repeat buyers and is available to members of the military, Foreign Service and intelligence community. There is also a provision to waive the 3 year payback clause if they are required to move due to new orders.
