Sarcasm, Banter and fun - 01/31/08 09:31 PM
Part I  -  Banter
I've grown to have a few good friends over my 6+ months on AR...  I have written and spoken to a few on more than one occasion as well.  I have a high degree of sincerity and passion in my life for all that I do.  I came from a family of 5 kids.  4 boys and 1 girl.  We were competitive and loved and for the most part turned out as normal as a family of 7 could be.  TBut we would need releases to keep our sanity.  So...with four siblings we found that a quick wit and … (9 comments)

Fed Makes it's move.... - 01/31/08 08:47 PM
Well....as expected the fed made it's move today.  It met today at 2:15 eastern time and announced that the Fed was cutting the fed rate.  Analysts have been split as to how much of a fed cut it would do.  Many thought the the cut was to be 50 bps or fifty basis points or .50.  Others thought 75 bps.  Ultimately, they decided on a 50 bps cut.
What does this mean?  Well we're really not sure.  But coupled with the targets of the President's economic stimulus package many people believe that this is a huge step in moving forward with reviving … (0 comments)

Today's Markets....what does this mean for you????? - 01/31/08 09:32 AM
The Federal Reserve conformed with median expectations, cutting the Fed Funds and Discount rates 50bp on Wednesday, just over a week since its surprise 75bp cut. In addition, the Fed stoked expectations for further easing by noting that "downside risks to growth remain" and that the Fed would "act in a timely manner as needed to address those risks." There was one dissenter, Dallas Fed Fisher, who preferred not to take any action. It was the fourth meeting in a row at which there was a dissention of some sort. The curve steepened in response to the action as short and … (0 comments)

Today's Markets...ahead of the Fed Meeting - 01/30/08 09:25 AM
Yields rose again on Tuesday with most spots on the Treasury curve rising 8-9bp in calm, orderly trading as the market awaited today's FOMC meeting. December durable goods came in much stronger than expected, rising 5.2%. The S&P/Case-Shiller US Composite Home Price Index, which measures housing prices in twenty MSA's, declined in November by 7.74% year-over-year, the largest monthly year-over-year decline since this data series commenced in January 2001. Declines occurred in 17 of the 20 MSAs. News continued to swirl around the bond insurers with reports hitting the wires that the NY insurance commissioner requested that S&P and Moody's delay … (2 comments)

What politicians really mean in common language - 01/30/08 07:26 AM
The way of the words.  Aren't politicians the best at saying a lot and saying nothing.  Now, maybe I'll run for politics one day and suffer a similar fate.  I ran for the equivalent of being our mayor about 5 years ago.  I lost.  Thankfully so.  I was bummed, but only for about a day or two.  I subsequently went on to have 5 kids.  Something would suffer if I had won.  I did win endorsements from our local papers, but I was so damn blunt.  I love the Mike Ditka approach that it is what it is!  See the quotes and interpretations below.  Then, and only … (9 comments)

What's the deal on this economic stimulus??? Good, bad or indifferent... - 01/29/08 08:46 PM
One of my great friends, Ken Webster, or Sir Kenneth to the common man, called me today to B.S. and talk about life, love (married people having babies), and our economic stimulus.  After sharing with me a brief overview, I told Ken that I'd love to hear his rant and rave.  He said...funny you should ask, Bettag, because I've written all of my printable thoughts down on paper.  He e-mailed it to me.  I told him that if it was stimulating, in a purely non-sexual way, and appropriate (of course), that I would feature him on my blog.  So, I am … (3 comments)

It's not you....It's me. I'm the one to blame - 01/28/08 10:01 PM
Hey Mr. Needy consumer.  I know that I'm a qualified professional who has spent years serving all types.  I'm married and have 5 kids.  I really need to support them and so I really need the business you know.  I really like you and all, but I for the most part, tolerate people like you because you're putting money on my family's table.  Not to brag or be arrogant or anything, but I've done a lot for you every time I've been with you over the last 14 years.  We've met on weekends, on Sundays, during dinners, talked to you on Thanksgiving … (8 comments)

Today's Market Commentary - 01/28/08 10:06 AM
Today's Market CommentaryYields fell 15bp across the curve on Friday as stocks resumed their plunge following two straight days of gains. For the week, stocks ended higher, thanks to the monetary and fiscal stimulus expectations, and bond prices ended a bit higher. Bond yields and stock prices ended the week well off of their lows seen mid-week. The coming week is poised to be nearly as interesting as last week (it would be difficult for it to eclipse last week) as market participants try to digest a four-ring circus. Washington's stimulus plans and the State of the Union address, the FOMC … (0 comments)

Gross.....a snag in the A.R. Wheel - 01/27/08 10:25 PM
I've got it...it's been going great.  I've been cranking away on AR all year making AR a part of my daily disciplines.  Friday, I was hopping on AR to catch up with comments and post, but my motherboard crashed.  For the non computer geeks like me who don't know what the heck a motherboard, I just found out a while back when it crashed a few months ago....THEN FOR THE SECOND TIME.  Basically, it meant in my case that the computer won't power up.  So....bottom line I was shut out.  I called Dell and they said my warranty went out after September.  GROSS!!!  Sure, I have other computers, … (5 comments)

730,000 FHA Limit? Unreal....stay tuned...sooner than later - 01/25/08 08:39 AM
Significant action is being taken by the federal government to stabilize the housing market - Hot off the press from our industry cooperative partners   As part of the economic stimulus package being negotiated by House Democrats and the Treasury Department, Fannie and Freddie loan limits will increased for one year up to $730,000.   The increase will be adjusted for local markets at 125% of local median home price.  The move will significantly improve liquidity and pricing in the jumbo market.   The agreement also includes raising the FHA loan limits to the same amount.  We are trying to confirm whether the … (0 comments)

Today's Market Commentary....rates on the rise!!!! The Market Whiplash - 01/24/08 09:20 AM
The New York Times called yesterday "Whiplash Wednesday", a term which best describes action in the stock and bond markets amid extremely high volatility which is not likely to subside soon. The Dow spanned a nearly 600 point range, being down sharply in the morning but closing up nearly 300 points on the day. Bond prices moved inversely to stocks. The two-year Treasury saw its yield fall to 1.84% amid stock weakness but the stock rally brought the yield up to 2.15%. Such a move would be a big one for any given week but for it to occur in one … (7 comments)

Candidates for Campton - Candidates for Disinformation - True colors shown - 01/24/08 08:50 AM
The pro-government candidates are absolutely fixated on finding a connection between B&B and the Stop Campton Hills PAC.  Their time would be better spent trying to find a copy of the Village budget so we would all know what this Village is really costing all of us.  Their PAC (Political Action Committee) is fixated on contributions that B&B gave to fight the incorporation of Campton.  This was through Concerned Citizens Against Incorporation (CCAI).  This was a completely separate PAC than the current one that is seeking to dissolve the Village of Campton.  As far as the fraudulent postings on the Candidates FOR … (0 comments)

Today's Market Commentary....rates continue to drop - 01/23/08 09:54 AM
Yields fell across the curve on Tuesday as stocks plunged, expectations of a recession rose, and the Fed cut the Fed Funds and Discount rates by 75bp, the largest single cut since 1982. While most of the move in Treasuries occurred before the Fed's 8:20am EST announcement, volatility continued throughout the day. The 35bp drop in the two-year's yield was the biggest single day decline since trading resumed after 9/11 and the 30bp decline in the five-year eclipsed the post-9/11 dip. The ten-year's nearly 20bp decline in yield was the biggest since the Fed's surprise January 2, 2001 rate cut. Impressively, … (10 comments)

Looking for a little prayer advice here - 01/22/08 10:56 AM
OK...not to be some kind of freak here, but I'm totally connected with Christ this year.  It's awesome quite frankly.  My business is at a record pace, not just for this market, but for any market.  I am working on some insanely huge commercial deals, my wife, for whatever reason still digs me after 10 years of marriage, we're building a new home and all 5 of my kids are just ass kickers....
But...knowing that I need to take it up a notch, I'm feeling led to crank my prayer life up a notch.  Anyway, there are two separate items that conflect … (16 comments)

Here's the info as it is set forth by the Federal Reserve.... - 01/22/08 08:50 AM

Release Date: January 22, 2008
For immediate release
The Federal Open Market Committee has decided to lower its target for the federal funds rate 75 basis points to 3-1/2 percent.
The Committee took this action in view of a weakening of the economic outlook and increasing downside risks to growth.  While strains in short-term funding markets have eased somewhat, broader financial market conditions have continued to deteriorate and credit has tightened further for some businesses and households.  Moreover, incoming information indicates a deepening of the housing contraction as well as some softening in labor markets.
The Committee expects inflation to moderate in … (3 comments)

World Markets Reel...Rates are Rocking....Time to get this party started!!! - 01/22/08 08:29 AM
Fasten your seatbelts...Yields fell a touch on Friday with the curve steepening. The UofM consumer confidence index rose unexpectedly but remains well below its averages. Yesterday, US markets were closed but global stock markets were open and plunging. The global meltdown continued overnight and brought most major world stock markets down over 10% for the week. The Fed this morning cut Fed Funds by 75bp to 3.50%, following is the text of the FOMC's statement: The Federal Open Market Committee has decided to lower its target for the federal funds rate 75 basis points to 3-1/2 percent.

Green Bay Packers....I'm eating humble pie. - 01/20/08 10:19 PM
I hate to say it, but I really am somewhat of a bitter loser when it comes to losing with things that I'm passionate about.  I was so sure....that the Packers were going to win that I was already looking at Super Bowl 42 tickets way before gametime.  Needless to say....I may even be one of those bitter guys that says if there was a rematch we'd kill the NYGs.  However, if I'm really honest, I'd say that I really like NYG (even if we are better and just lost one game to them).  I want the Gs to tear apart … (21 comments)

Countdown to the Ice Bowl II - 01/20/08 03:49 PM
Giants in the frozen tundra of Green Bay at Lambeau Field tonight.  Gametime conditions according to the NFL today on CBS says that it's 1 degree with a kickoff windchill at 25 below zero.  As stated earlier, my mom and dad are going to the game.  Just spoke to them and they are psyched.  At 69 and 70 years old they said that its so much warmer than the 40 below windchill bear game that they hit last year.  They said it'll be balmy.
Let's hope that the game is exciting and that Dad has his spicey bloody mary's and mom … (8 comments)

Pinewood Derby - What a Kick in the Pants!!! - 01/20/08 03:12 PM
Well....I wrote this past week that I had the Pinewood Derby coming this weekend.  We made it and did quite well on top of that.  Yesterday was the big day.  All week we made a huge event out of the upcoming derby.  Every day we did a different task relating to the Derby.  On the first day we did the design and cut of the cars.  The next day we painted part of our design.  The next we painted the remaining part of the car.  The next day we weighed it and added the appropriate amount of weights to the car … (6 comments)

Ice Bowl 2 on Sunday....Packers are Ready - 01/18/08 09:01 AM
Had a lot of banter last week as the Packers whalloped the Seahawks despite the terrible start in Green Bay.  The buzz this week is the dirty play of the Giants, the inconsistency of Eli....before the playoffs and the consistency of him during the playoffs, and of course, the legend of Brett and the weather....ooooh the weather.

No surprise here that Favre has had his day and his days are numbered, but this year seems magical in an Elway-esque sort of way.  I'm excited to see what this game brings.  In my heart of hearts, I think that this will be … (22 comments)

Today's Market Commentary - Wild ride yesterday good for Lenders - 01/18/08 08:41 AM
Stocks plunged and bonds soared on Thursday amid weak economic data and a Fed view that the situation is bad enough to warrant a major economic stimulus package. The Philadelphia Fed's manufacturing index fell to -20.9, its lowest level in six years. Expectations were for a level around -1.0, not too far from the -1.6 revised December level. The Philly Fed index has a pretty good correlation to the national ISM index. Fed Chairman Bernanke appeared before the House Budget Committee to discuss a possible economic stimulus. Endorsing a large, quick, yet temporary package, Bernanke appeared to confess that the Fed's … (0 comments)

Today's Market Commentary - 01/17/08 10:18 AM
Bond prices fell a bit on Wednesday and stocks did better, especially bank and brokerage stocks. The December report on industrial production and capacity utilization was a touch better-than-expected. The Fed released its Beige Book, prepared ahead of the end-of-month FOMC meeting. It painted a brighter picture of the economy than has appeared recently. The report noted slow growth but not a contraction. The Fed's views may be more clear today when Fed Chairman Bernanke appears before Congress to discuss an economic stimulus. In contrast to Fed Chairman Greenspan, Bernanke is expected to be more openly supportive of a stimulus package … (0 comments)

Candidates for the Citizens of Campton Hills....FREE US!!!! - 01/16/08 10:01 PM
Well, you have asked for it....here it is....here is the slate that you need to support in the upcoming election.  These are honest reputable citizens that are excited about supporting the citzens of Campton Hilss....  The other slate wants to support the government of Campton Hills.  I'm against any slate that is in the mix just to support a government.  Also, I'm passionate about supporting a slate that is truly interested in its citizens.  If this were Chicago, I'd say "Vote Early, Vote Often."  But in all seriousness....contact your friends, neighbors and families and tell them by not supporting these people, … (1 comments)

Today's Market Commentary - Analysis - 01/16/08 10:43 AM
Bond prices rose on Tuesday as stocks plunged. By the close, the Dow was down 277 (2.17%) and the S&P Financial Index, lead by its biggest weighting Citigroup, fell 3.74%. It was clearly a bad day for stocks and especially financials as the subprime and related hits kept coming and the need to raise capital continued. Companies across a broad spectrum of industries are having earnings issues. Intel disappointed with its earnings news on Tuesday. Yields fell 7-9bp across the curve. The two-year Treasury fell below 2.50% for the first time since 2004 and the ten-year Treasury hit its lowest yield … (3 comments)

Today's Market Analysis - 01/15/08 08:48 AM
Bond prices moved little on Monday despite a strong day in the stock market. Bond market rumors focused on heavy losses at Citigroup. This morning, those rumors were mostly confirmed with the bank's announced fourth quarter loss which was dominated by a $17.4 billion subprime charge. Citi will cut its dividend 41% and will issue another $14.5 billion in preferred stock. Merrill is receiving a $6.6 billion infusion from a consortium of foreign investors. Earnings announcements will dot the landscape for the next several weeks. This morning, bond prices are a bit higher and have shown little reaction to the morning's … (0 comments)

Today's Market Commentary - 01/14/08 09:58 AM
Still benefitting from perceived economic softness and echoes of Fed Chairman Bernanke's words, bond prices rose on Friday and expectations for Fed easing soared. While the 11-14bp drop in short and intermediate term Treasury yields was big news, the decline in Fed Funds futures' yields was even more impressive and surprising. This morning, Treasuries are giving up some of the ground gained on Friday but Fed Funds futures continue moving lower in yield. The Fed Funds futures' February contract is now trading at 3.64%, 61bp below the current target rate. The May contract is trading at 3%, 125bp lower than the … (0 comments)

Pinewood Derby Next Weekend - 01/14/08 09:56 AM

I have the boy scout's Pinewood Derby this weekend.  I have never placed and now I have 2 sons in the race.  My dad always made sure that my brother and I had kick ass cars.  We never lost.  Now things are so hi tech.  There's one local guy who took his car to a wind tunnel at General Motors.  Needless to say a lot of the intent of the sport has been lost....that's the focus on the kids.

Cherry Creek Grows Again in 2007 - 01/11/08 10:43 AM
Not by much at all, but not many companies in North America can say that they actually grew in 2007.  We did!  Our profits were fine and our fundings grew.  But most importantly we grew significant market share nationally.  While other companies closed their doors, merged or just struggled to stay open, it is now official....We grew in a year that we weren't supposed to.
Of course, the sub-prime matter doesn't make it easy for us or for a myriad of other lenders nationally.  There is a lot of fallout because of that.  The demise of a lot of top wholesalers … (0 comments)

Today's Market Analysis - 01/10/08 08:49 AM
Yields rose a few basis points on Wednesday as the bond market took a break from its recent rallies. Stocks, especially financials, had another wild ride, falling sharply throughout the day before being rescued just before the close. There were no economic reports released. St. Louis Fed President Poole, a non-voter on the FOMC who is about to retire, spoke quite dovishly about monetary policy. He said, "Stable inflation expectations give the Federal Reserve a lot of room for maneuver. If evidence suggests that substantial policy easing is appropriate, I don't think we're going to face a risk of adverse inflation … (2 comments)

Green Bay Packers this weekend or all the way - 01/09/08 10:15 PM
Carson Palmer was interviewed this past week on who can take New England.  Many think that Jacksonville can, but what surprised me was that Carson Palmer said that the Packers, due to their tight man coverage, had the ability to upset them.  I am poised to get some tickets for the the Packer's game against Seattle this weekend. It's a 5 hour trip, but I'd rather wait until the Super Bowl.

High Unemployment bodes well for interest rates...unfortunately. - 01/04/08 10:56 AM
Today's Market CommentaryThe curve steepened slightly on Thursday with the two-year's yield falling 5bp while the ten-year was little changed and the yield on the long-bond rose a touch. Trading activity was light ahead of today's payroll report. This morning, bond prices are sharply higher with two to five-year yields down 15bp to their lowest levels of this cycle following a disappointing employment report. The economy created a mere 18,000 non-farm jobs in December, well below the anemic estimates of 70,000. The prior report was revised higher by 20,000. The unemployment rate surged to 5%, up 0.3% to its highest level … (0 comments)

Year End Summary....pretty crazy no matter how you slice it!!! - 01/02/08 11:37 AM
1. After several twists and turns, the story that we laid out a year ago has indeed played out -- a persistent downturn in the housing market that persuaded the FOMC to ease policy aggressively in order to reduce the risk of a sharp economic downturn.  We believe that this story has further to go in 2008.  So our monetary policy call is considerably more aggressive than the consensus, with a 3% terminal funds rate.  Our best guess is that a proactive Fed will be able to keep GDP growth from going negative (though it's a close call, especially in H1).
2. Why does the Fed need … (2 comments)
