gila: Gomez Peak Trail near Silver City, NM - 04/20/10 12:31 PM
Gomez Peak is about five minutes north of Silver City. It climbs to 7,238 feet above sea level. This hike is a demanding with vertical challenges a large part of the way. Whenever you come to another trail leading upwards, either on your left or right, take it and your reward will be a 360 degree view of the Gila Wilderness, the desert and mountain ranges clear to the Mexican border and virtually the entire town of Silver City, along with the Kneeling Nun and a good view of the Black Range to the East. Depending on your sightseeing needs, this can be a

gila: The Gila Cliff Dwellings - Silver City, NM 88061 - 04/12/10 11:05 AM
The Gila Cliff Dwellings are located 44 miles north of Silver City in the Gila (Hee-la) National Forest. You travel up Highway 15 through a beautiful pine forest with sweeping views. The Mogollon Indians lived here over 700 years ago. You can actually enter the dwellings, see where they lived, look into some of the structures from above, and explore the cave walls where petroglyphs can be seen. The dwellings were built into cave walls 180 feet above the river floor. You can see the smoke where they had fires, round areas in the floor where they placed their pots, the

gila: Cowboy Action Shooting in Silver City, NM - 01/14/10 10:46 AM
Have you ever heard of Cowboy Action Shooting? Or the Single Action Shooting Society www.sassnet.com ? Well if you want to play cowboy / cowgirl, you'll want to check this sport out. Using 3 different types of guns (2 pistols, 1 shot gun and 1 rifle), you ‘get' the bad guys by following a scenario. You may shoot 10 pistols, 9 rifle and 4 shot gun, being timed and misses counted along the way. The fun begins before hand when you choose an alias, get dressed in 1890's garb and build a gun cart. My husband belongs to the local club,

gila: Week-end in Silver City, NM - 06/19/09 01:39 PM
June 19, 2009 There are a few nice events going on in Silver City this week-end. Sometimes it's just nice to walk around town and check things out. 1. There is the Farmers Market on Saturday morning. Go buy some fresh vegetables and a freshly baked good. While you're there, go across the street and check out the Art Market. 2. Hang out downtown and enjoy the Yankie and Texas Street street dance. Local musician Brandon Perault is playing. He's great! 3. There will be a Vets Motorcycle Run in Fort Bayard that is like a festival. Music, food, etc. It's

gila: Silver City author, Dutch Salmon - 06/03/09 12:56 PM
Dutch Salmon is a local outdoorsman / author. He is the author of seven outdoor books including "Gila Descending", "Country Sports", and the novel "Home is the River". I recommend reading any and all of them; they're great reads. I especially enjoyed "Gila Descending" where he tells the true story of his travels with his pets on the Gila River. He helped me to see the hunter in a new light when he explained his hunting philosophy in that book. Another enjoyable read is "Country Sports" which is a compilation of his Newspaper articles. Informative, amusing, good stuff. He and his

gila: Cutting Firewood in the Gila National Forest - 03/11/09 12:03 PM
March 11, 2009 Cutting Firewood in the Gila National Forest Many homes in Silver City have wood-burning fireplaces or stoves. Since we're so close to the Gila (Hee-la) National Forest, it's nice to be able to cut wood and bring it home. Here is some information on the process. You may cut and take firewood any time of the year. There are certain areas in the forest where you can take wood from. When you get the permit, they will show you these areas. There are "Dead Wood Permits" - -these are valid throughout the forest except in prohibited areas. You

gila: History of Silver City - Part 2 - 03/10/09 11:29 AM
March 9, 2009 History of Silver City - Part 2 At the beginning of the 1900's the area became a haven for tuberculoses sufferers. Sanitariums popped up around the area. One road, currently named Cottage San Road, was the home of one: Cottage Sanitarium. Another Sanitarium was run by the Sisters of Mercy. It is now Fort Bayard, a hospital for patients unable to care for themselves. Fort Bayard began as a fort to protect the area residents from Indians. The first all-black regimen (the buffalo soldiers), protected the area. The fort has gone through several transitions including being managed by

gila: Silver City is for the Adventure Seeker! - 02/18/09 11:19 AM
February 18, 2009 The 3.3 million acres of Gila Wilderness offers a playground for the adventurer. The area is rich in history including Indian dwellings, conquerors, ranchers, miners, conservationist Aldo Leopald, and hunter Ben Lilly. The beauty of the area includes indescribable vistas, canyons and caverns, rivers, arroyos, mountains and mesas. It is a hiker's delight any time of the year. If you want to enjoy a guided tour, check out: http://blackbearexplorers.com/?p=22 I know; you're feeling cramped in your neighborhood, frustrated by traffic, concerned about international travel. Come to Silver City, take a deep breath of fresh air and say, "Ahhhhhhhhh".

gila: Silver City loves it's animals! - 02/02/09 11:27 AM
February 2, 2009 Today I'd like to talk about animals in our area. I love the fact that every day I get to see deer and horses on my way to or from work. Regularly I see other animals - wild and tame - Jack rabbits, skunks, cattle, chipmunks, javalina, hawks, donkeys, coyote, fox, woodpeckers and snakes. When I'm walking or hiking I like to check out the variety of tracks we see or try to identify the scat. My neighbor gives me a list of birds he has recently seen. Once, when I was south of town, I saw a herd
