gila national forest: Green camping in the Gila National Forest - 04/23/10 10:50 AM
Jamie Rhein wrote a great post about 'camping green' in the Gila. Here it is reposted: Apr 22, 2010 12:41 - By: Jamie Rhein The Gila Wilderness offers earth friendly lodging Earth Day makes me think of places like the Gila Wilderness in New Mexico. It's a perfect spot for an environmentally friendly hiking/primitive camping trip combo. It also offers non-fussy adventure in the midst of beauty. My trip to the Gila National Forest, where the wilderness is located, was the most environmentally friendly one I've ever been on-except for two years in the Peace Corps in The Gambia, West Africa,

gila national forest: Hiking Etiquitte in Silver City, NM - 03/16/10 11:20 AM
I wanted to talk briefly about hiking etiquette. Hikers are really good out here but I figure that it's a good idea to talk about once in a while. I like to feel like I'm the first one on the land I'm walking so I don't want to see a lot of evidence of other people - - like garbage, fire pits, etc. However, I don't want to go off trail either since that starts the breakdown of the wilderness (stepping on grasses and plants, occasional bushwhacking). That's why we're really careful to hike out everything we hiked in. We tend

gila national forest: Wordless Wednesday in Silver City, NM - 10/14/09 12:59 PM
October 14, 2009 - Wordless Wednesday (Happy Birthday Lynn!) Sometimes you just need a few beautiful photos to make you feel good. This is a photograph of Gomez Peak from Lot 140 in Dos Griegos. This is a view of the Mogollon Mountains west of Silver City taken from the Burro Mountains. I just look at that and say, "Ahhhhh". There are many doors and gates that have decorative accents around town. It sure does make taking a walk an enjoyable time!

gila national forest: Arrastra near Silver City - what's an Arrastra? - 08/17/09 11:43 AM
August 17, 2009 This week-end I hiked up near the "Arrastra" Site just north of Pinos Altos. Arrastra: rock-lined ore-grinding pit. This is one of some 75 arrastras that the miners built in the Pinos Altos vicinity; it offers an insight into the hardship that prospectors would endure in their compulsive pursuit of gold. Powered by a mule or a horse, "Large dragstones were pulled over a mixture of crushed ore and water," according to the U. S. Forest Service marker at the arrastra site. Once a heavy mud formed, the operator added mercury [which, in concentration, can cause severe

gila national forest: Silver City, New Mexico celebrates the 4th of July. - 07/06/09 01:38 PM
Silver City celebrated the 4th of July with a bunch of nice, small town events including the Farmer's Market and Art Show, Cowboy Breakfast and Booths in Gough Park, the 4th of July Parade, and an Ice Cream Social at the Silver City Museum. Then at night there was an excellent Fireworks display! Here are a few photos from the parade. God Bless America! The above photo shows "The Charros of North Hurley". Most of these horses did some showy stepping at different times during the parade. Since Silver City and Grant County are BIG on ranching

gila national forest: Horse Information for Silver City, NM - 05/15/09 10:31 AM
May 15, 2009 My good friends, Jim and Margaret Jones are avid horse lovers. They provided me with all the following information to share with all of you. I hope it helps! When my wife and I moved to Silver City from Missouri some 18 years ago, we brought our horses with us. This is great country to ride in; beautiful scenery, fantastic weather, and plenty of folks who understand and enjoy horses, so nothing to worry about....Right? First off, what do you feed them? Alfalfa hay is plentiful and available year round. Grass hay is a little more pricey, but getting more popular

gila national forest: The Mimbres Valley - near Silver City, NM - 05/11/09 04:31 PM
May 11, 2009 This week-end I was camping in the Mimbres Valley on John Fowler's ranch. It borders the Gila (Hee-la) National Forest and is beautiful with many canyons, trees, cattle and I believe that was an owl that kept me awake Friday night. Here are a few photos of the surroundings. This photo was taken up on a ridge on Fowler Ranch in the Mimbres Valley near Silver City, New Mexico. If you look between the mountains, you can see a lot of green growth, These are Cottonwood Trees near the Mimbres River.

gila national forest: Silver City is different than the rest of the country - 03/17/09 01:52 PM
March 17, 2009 People seem to exaggerate here. I say this with a twinkle in my eye and a wink. The Rio Grande is not that big of a river. Also, when I hear the word monsoon I imagine that it starts raining one day and does not stop for 30-40 days. That's not how it is here. It means the rainy season where clouds build during the day and a part of the area may get a downpour for an hour or two. This happens generally every day for about a month and a half. It is a lot drier

gila national forest: Hiking safety in the Silver City area - 03/04/09 02:24 PM
March 4, 20009 Yesterday's blog was more about etiquette; today I'll discuss hiking in the mountains and desert with more of a safety twist. My husband is a volunteer with the mounted (horseback) Search and Rescue. A large percentage of his rescues involve someone hiking alone. I know that some of you like solitude but it's just not safe. When you are going on a hike, for goodness sake, tell someone where you're going and when you are planning on being home. We used to just go out for the day and take a ride and then hike wherever we thought
